Christmas number one odds slashed, Editors singer disses Nizlopi
Bookmakers have narrowed the race for Christmas number one down to two songs: Nizlopi's 'The JCB Song' and X-Factor winner Shayne Ward's 'That's My Goal'. The latter single isn't even released until tomorrow.
The above said, serious punters should see through the odds easily enough. With Nizlopi at 7/2 and Shayne at 1/10, it's fairly obvious who should romp to the festive top spot.
Only Girls Aloud are likely to offer the pair any real competition according to the current odds: at 25/1, their 'See The Day' might be worth a few pennies, in the hope that the delivery of 'That's My Goal' is delayed. Pray for a freak snow storm over the pressing plant, or that Chris Martin's driving behind a truck full of singles.
Outsiders include James Blunt, The Pogues and Coldplay. No better odds than 33/1 are being offered for such artists.
In related news, Editors singer Tom Smith has expressed his opinion of 'The JCB Song'.
“That Nizlopi song is terrible. It sounds like every Christmas song ever – with added sentiment," he told The Star.
“If people realised that it’s a load of tosh that they’ll get fed up with in less than two weeks, then they could save themselves a load of bother."

What some of our favourite musicians hope for in 2009...
I may be wrong
But I thought that the X Factor song was already guaranteed number one due to the amount of pre-orders that the shops have made? I read that somewhere. I like reading. Well, sometimes
I was convinced
on saturday the song was 'My Ego' It fits the mood better I think.
Hmmm
"If people realised that it's a load of tosh that they'll get fed up with in less than two weeks, then they could save themselves a load of bother"
If only he told me that before I purchased the Editors album :(
Ha ha
"Hope that Chris Martin is driving behind a truck load of singles".
You can't get number one off pre-orders can you? I thought that was just gold/platinum discs.
Editors Muppetry
Is it not a little rich for a man who earns his keep by regurgitating the same moody new wave drivvel that normal people tired of about 15 years ago, to talk about someones music becoming boring? What a twat. That Nizlopi song is immense. Nothing wrong with optimism ;)
That's What Simon Cowell Wants You To Think...
All the shop's pre-orders means is that the shop will stock 750, 000 copies. It doesn't mean they have sold them (or indeed will sell them), just they're expecting that to demand.
..
I heard that Nizlopi song the other day. Completely not bothered about it. My dad likes it though because "You get a couple of days like that sometimes". He likes the idea of sitting on a JCB with your dad*. Bless.
*Not YOUR dad, obviously he wouldn't know him from adam. Although saying that I don't think grandad's ever owned a JCB... :S Oh dear I'm confused.
how fucking cool would it be though
to own a JCB? i mean, really!
So a bloke from Editors...
...is banging on about things not lasting?
Ho ho. Wait and see where your Joy Division tribute band are in 2007, Bowman-porker.
meanwhile...
...some anonymous oik on the drownedinsound forum pointed out that "that comment from the Editors singer is rubbish. It sounds like every comment from the singer of an average indie band on something the rest of the world couldn't care less about. But hey, their album's been out a while and the publicity's wearing off- so getting in the papers again is really important. Especially as it's nearly Christmas."
That said, it was reported in the Star, so should probably be taken with a huge pile of salt.
Ok it's late and I've had a few but....
What is with Nizlopi not being liked by people on here?
I couldn’t believe the comments on the last article.
Ok you think it is not the greatest piece of musical work ever, but surely you would prefer an act that has some musical integrity to be successful.
If you care that artists write there own songs (not that that should matter) go with Nizlopi. If you want the money to go to a small independent label who develop acts rather than essentially a huge electronics corporation who just buy everything then you should go with Nizlopi.
Ok Hate the track but surely you can’t say that it is worse than the awful track that Shayne Ward is putting out or the Girls Aloud tune.
It may be the better of three evils but it is defiantly the better.
Has anyone here heard any of Nizlopi other stuff before making your mind up for? June is a really incredible piece of work.
I doubt any of that matters, but it’s an independent cause worth being hated for.
Jimi x
p.s.
oh and yea it is clear that they will be a one hit wonder and maybe if they built a fan base slower they could maintain some sort of growth but without this they would never been mentioned in "the Star"
I was almost under the impression that any publicity was good publicity! but na keep it underground! Unknow means an act is best.
Nah,
It's an irritating song that appeals to over-sentimental dads going through a mid-life crisis.
tosser
Whatever Tom from Editors or anyone thinks I'm more than amused by the fact that the same guy produced Bullets as JCB. Tom claims it sounds like every Christmas song ever.... what as opposed to every Joy Division song. What a muppet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm confused...
Is the JCB song even a christmas song? Does it contain the word christmas or any generally festive sentiments anywhere? I can't believe that the JCB song was written with christmas in mind.
total tosser
I don't understand why you are dissing him when you gave Nizlopi 0 as a rating. Surely that suggests you agree with his sentiments you muppet.
So a newspaper asked him what he thought of the Nislopi tune and he told them he didn't like it. What's the big deal? Do you all love it or something?
Surely it's just sentimental crap for 40 plus Dads and losers?
bcos dear total tosser/ cactus
I'm dissing him not because he doesn't like it because that's fine and I'm not a fan of them having seen them live. Am dissing him because he slags off the sound of their record when all the production values of the record are VERY similar to his own probably aided by the fact he's got the same producer (it says so on both cds). Makes me realise he ain't all that as a musician though editors did make bullets sound like coldplay when they used to be called snowfield but probably only those of us that live in Brum know that
you are stupid misplaced
Another bitter girlfriend / cousin etc of an unsuccessful Birmingham band?? Quelle Surpise. Exist perhaps?
The song was the same before and after they changed names. Exactly the same. Note for note. You are stupid and deaf if you think otherwise.
He doesn't slag the sound of the record - it's simple- he was asked if he liked it and he said no -basically that it was over sentimental Xmas shite - what's the problem? It's just an opinion and one you seem to share- so why the argument?
And for info - Gavin recorded the song. He didn't produce. He recorded it just as they played it. recorded and mixed in a day for a limited edition first single. He did a good job and probably did a good job for Nizlopi, but who cares, we are talking about the song here not the production values, you mong!!
.
Nizlopi (with their JCB juggernaut) have been around for aggggges now. They released that song as a single earlier in the year. They released their album ages ago (with JCB on). They even released that album ages and ages before that (with JCB on - I'm talking years now here) and that was before their signed a publishing deal, the record was re-packaged and re-issued with that comp. They turned down some big deals and kept it on their own label. I think if people read up on em they will see that a) it's not an xmas song and b) they had a massive following by word of mouth pre JCB release and most of those fans probably liked them for their stuff that is really quite different from JCB. It shows how silly some people (including those in bands :p) can be.
wot a piloc
Dear me you have such a chip on your shoulder over this. You in Editors by the way as you seem to know a lot about their recording process and refer to their producer in first name terms. No i'm nothing to do with any band in brum. Exist, Deluka and co are just starting out so you shouldn't refer to them as unsuccesful. Yep indeedy I'm sure you are in the band or a girlfreind/cousin laughing my arse off. Anyway happy christmas and peace and good will to all editors and their families. Was just an observation lol so let it rest xxxxxxxxx
