"Love Music, Hate Racism" - Anti Nazi League free carnival

The Anti Nazi League is holding a free ‘Love Music, Hate Racism’ Carnival against the Nazis on Sunday 1st September in Platt Fields Park, Manchester.

Originally intended to be held in Burnley, where there are three BNP Councillors, the Carnival was moved to Manchester after being refused a license and is intended as a show of solidarity against the increased influence of the BNP in the Northwest, which has seen an increase in racial tension and racist attacks over the past year. The acts cover a variety of styles and includeMs Dynamite, Doves, Miss Black America,The Shining and Billy Bragg. As well as two stages for performers there will be a dance tent, a kids area, stalls and plenty of food and drink.

The day starts at 11am with a march from Manchester Town Hall, Albert Square, to the carnival site at Platt Fields Park. Transport is being organised across the UK – for further details phone 020 7924 0333 or visit www.anl.org.uk

"Love Music, Hate Racism" - Anti Nazi League free carnival

Did anyone out there go? Just curious what it was like...

Re: "Love Music, Hate Racism" - Anti Nazi League free carnival

My mate went....apparently the ANL said that there was about 30,000 there..when between 5-10,000 would've been nearer the mark. He said that generally it was a very good atmosphere, the music was okay, nothing special, but everyone seemed to be enjoying himself.

He also said it's unfortunate that the ANL's national organiser, Julie Waterson, throws her arms about manically when speaking. Someone close could do no better than to advise Julie that her constant and over-extravagant arm gesticulations, seen from a distance, are unfortunately reminiscent of Adolf Hitler.

Re: "Love Music, Hate Racism" - Anti Nazi League free carnival

I went, foo'! It was pretty damn good, only Miss Black America's set finished just as the March got in. Sona Fariq were brilliant. We left at about 5 though because we had to get home and weren't that interested in the others. There were a lot of people there and it was the perfect weather and was generally pretty brilliant.

Just a bit silly, all the food/drink prices there were the same as you'd expect at Leeds/Reading.
