DiS is compiling a playlist of 101 songs to act as an introduction to Electronic music (yeah, we know that is a very broad term!).
We're doing this, partly because we can, but mostly to celebrate the launch of a new magazine named Electronic. They've given us a big sack of Electronic records for one of you to win, just by taking part in our playlist folly and sharing your knowledge...
Before we get to the playlist that we've compiled so far, we have the following prizes to give away to one lucky winner:
Prizes:
- Robert Hood – Motor: Nighttime World 3 (Music Man): The Detroit techno legend presents the latest album in his ‘Nighttime World’ series.
- Mark Stewart – The Politics Of Envy (Future Noise Music): The acclaimed new album, including the new single ‘Stereotype’, featuring Factory Floor.
- Grasscut – Unearth (Ninja Tune): Quality electronica with a dash of pyscho-geography and a guest appearance by Robert Wyatt.
- Outer Space – II (Blast First Petite): The second offering in a trilogy of releases from John Elliot of Emeralds.
- Minny Pops – Standstill To Motion (LTM Recordings): A live CD/DVD package recorded in Amsterdam and New York in 1981.
- The Gaslamp Killer – Breakthrough (Brainfeeder): The debut album from the much admired LA turntablist and founder of the Low End Theory club.
- Kid Koala – 12 Bit Blues (Ninja Tune): Further proof that Eric San is one of the most innovative beatmasters around.
- Purity Ring – Belispeak 12-inch (4AD): A limited edition 12-inch of one of the highlights of the band’s excellent debut album ‘Shrines’.
- Blood Diamonds (featuring Grimes) – Phone Sex 12-inch (4AD): Grimes hooks up with her old pal Mike Tucker for this steel drum-driven electro fizzer.
- Backstage: A Book Of Reflections (Gary Numan book) by Stephen Roper: A fascinating book about Gary Numan focussing on the years 1979-81, when Numan was at the peak of his commercial success.
To enter, simply comment below telling us:
Which tracks - in your humble opinion - are missing from this Electronic music playlist?
This competition will close and the winner of this bag of swag will be picked by DiS' editor at midday on Friday 28th September 2012.
Please note: There are already some entries beneath a sample feature from the magazine about Twin Shadow, as well as in this thread on the DiS boards and over on our Facebook page.
Electronic magazine is now available in all good newsagents. You can download it to your Smartphone and Tablet via the Future Music and Computer Music. Here's a mini sampler of the magazine:
Here's a few, off the top of my head:
Human League - Don't You Want Me
LCD Soundsystem - North American Scum
Ultravox - Vienna
Air - Sexy Boy
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray
Gary Numan - Cars
I see there's somoe FlyLo on the list now...
But i would have plumped for 'GNG BNG'
FaltyDL - 'Hip Love' or 'Hard'
Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX - 'NY Is Killing Me'
Radiohead - 'Bloom' (Blawan Remix)
Machinedrum - 'Come1'
Caged Animals - 'Teflon Heart'
Auntie Flo - 'Highlife'
Mono/Poly - 'Needs Deodorant'
TNGHT - 'Higher Ground'
Clouds Are Mountains - 'Flux'
MODERAT - 'Rusty Nails'
Fever Ray - 'Concrete Walls'
Clams Casino - 'Illest Alive'
The Weeknd - 'Glass Table Girls'
An introduction to Electronic music..
I reckon 'Poeme Electronique' by Edgar Varese should be in there.
Also add in 'Whirly-Bird' by Silver Apples, just because I love that beat.
Add in 'L.S.I' by The Shamen and 'Speed' by Atari Teenage Riot too.
Boards of Canada - Ryogbiv
Possibly the most gorgeous 2 minutes of electronic music ever
Missing a lot of important ones
I'm shocked that so many important pioneering bands are not present in this list. Here goes:
Smothered Hope - Skinny Puppy
Dead Eyes Open - Severed Heads
Hot on the heels of love - Throbbing Gristle
Close to the Edit - Art of Noise
The Walk - The Cure
Red Light - Siouxsie & The Banshees
More and Faster - KMFDM
Enola Gay - OMD
King of the Flies - Fad Gadget
Believe - Gus Gus
In yer Face - 808 State
Beau Mot Plage - Isolee
Don't Laugh - Josh Wink
The art of Parties - Japan
Isolation - Joy Division
Headhunter - Front 242
Galang - M.I.A.
Over the shoulder - Ministry

Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Night - Benga & Coki

Over the ice - The Field
J Dilla- 'One For Ghost'
Pet Shop Boys- 'Rent'- a classic
Julia Holter- 'Goddess Eyed II'- some really good new stuff
Black To Comm- 'Hotel Freund'- edging into noise territory
Skrillex- 'Bangarang (ft. Sirah)'- like him or loathe him, he's been important for electronic music and is probably the biggest selling and best known 'electronic' artist working now.
What about Detroit?
I see that Detroit electro/techno is virtually not present here, so try these for a start:
Model 500 - Night Drive (Thru-Babylon)
Rhythim Is Rhythim - Strings Of Life
Underground Resistance - Transition
Robert Hood - Minus
Carl Craig - At Les
Drexciya - Hydro Theory
Jeff Mills - The Bells
The Aztec Mystic - Jaguar
that's why it's called a start
rather than a definitive list :-)
Top Picks!
I think that if we are talking about those "electronically influenced" artists who went on to influence others, number one on my list would be undoubtedly be PETE SHELLEY, and his 1981 single 'Homosapien'. This is widely acknowledged as being one of the earliest examples of industrial electronic music.
Other influential tracks would be:
Ultravox - Hiroshima Mon Amour
Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
The Normal - Warm Leatherette
Fad Gadget - Ricky's Hand
The Human League - Being Boiled (original)
Sparks - The Number 1 Song In Heaven
The last entry may be a little contentious, but just ask yourself this: how many synthpop duos came before them, and how many came after?
Austra - Shoot the Water
Röyksopp - This Must Be It (feat. Karin Dreijer Andersson)
Also add my vote to those who said Fever Ray and Boards of Canada!
?

A couple of thoughts....
Coil - Nasa Arab
Tangerine Dream - Alpha Centauri

Hmmm
Seems a lot of current DiS darlings are in this list rather than those who have really pioneered. Need to see some (or more) Chemical Brothers, 808 State, Lil Louis, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Underworld, Brian Eno, Art of Noise, Pet Shop Boys, Malcolm McLaren, Paul Hardcastle, Japan, Deadmau5, Gorillaz, Oakenfold, Visage, Yazoo, Erasure, Todd Terry, Cybotron and Herbie Hancock.
This is just scratching the surface so 4 out of 10 - must try harder.
Where is the History? (plus, How about these tunes?)

"Something I Can Never Have?" as a pioneering electronic track? Come on! "Don't you want me?" by Human League… how about "Being Boiled" instead? "Wonky" as the definitive Orbital track? Sorry…
Glad to see the cabs, the normal and fad gadget in the list. Afaik Throbbing Gristle still missing, and the chems.
Anything
from this playlist, which is my OFFICIAL gym playlist :)
