Lanterns on the Lake to play for DiS this Thursday

In case you’ve heard any different, it’s not actually that grim up north. It’s in that spirit that DiS is bringing you a bill of some of the best musicians that northern England has to offer.

This Thursday (November 3rd), we’re dragging the stunning Lanterns on the Lake down the M1 from Newcastle to play at The Harley in Sheffield. They’ll be supported by Liverpool’s Laura J Martin and South Yorkshire’s own Cats:for:peru.

Lanterns on the Lake have been pretty much smothered in praise from the likes of Elbow’s Guy Garvey for their breathtakingly beautiful and intricate fusion of subtle electronica and swooning folk melodies. In September, our very own David Edwards reviewed their debut album Gracious Tide, Take Me Home, giving it a not-too-shabby 8/10. He said:

“Newcastle has always been a folk haven with its working-class roots but Lanterns on the Lake typify a newer, younger, more experimental and more elegant hybrid style (though it’s still immersed in heartbreak, sighs of longing and lamentations). Their sorrow brings happiness to us, for their music is generally wonderful.”

Laura J Martin, on the other hand, is a little more happy-go-lucky. Her flute-based folk balladry is brought brilliantly to life by live loops and an uplifting thirst for experimentation. This year she’s cut her teeth playing with Norman Blake and Euros Childs’ latest band, Jonny, and is due to release her debut album early next year.

As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll have the wonderful Cats:for:peru to warm you all up. Get down early to see them play some of the most loveably proggy guitar-pop you can imagine.
