Every now and then a festival comes along with a difference, whether slight or great. Not many can be said to combine both philosophy and music, but there is one and that's HowTheLightGetsIn, which will run for the third time alongside the Hay-on-Wye literary festival. It runs from May 26-5 June and they've added some pretty decent names to the music side of things. These include:
Peggy Sue
Mount Kimbie
Lulu and the Lampshades
Ghostpoet
The Correspondents
Camille O'Sullivan
Man Like Me
Gwilym Gold
Plus, there are a few music vs. philosophy kind of talks throughout. Here's some of them to prick your interest:
The Music of Revolt:
"Self-styled 'Militant Aesthete' and journeyman intellectual Ben Watson explores how music can respond, react to and take part in political upheaval, with examples from Adorno to Zappa to Tahrir
Square."
Beats, Loops and Samples:
Postmodern philosopher Ulrich Lehmann explores the unexpected language and hidden significance of cut-and-paste sound sampling, from Musique Concrete to Public Enemy.
Dylan as Philosopher:
Poet, playwright and author Phil Bowen leads a celebration-cum-cross-examination of the work of Bob Dylan on the protean singer-songwriter's 70th Birthday.
