When the NME Awards shortlist was announced approximately a month ago, it wasn't met with much appreciation or particular good feeling, some might say deservedly so. One person posted:
"The NME seems to be stuck in 2005. Totally agree - stunning dull line up. The list of acts could have been in a 2005 line up. Have I just got older and wiser or has NME completely lost its edge? Disappointing!"
Harsh? Anyway, the awards show itself was last night, at the Brixton Academy in South London. So let's not spend any more time faffing around and find out who won what. I sincerely hope Los Campesinos! managed to win best blog. As you can guess from the headline, Muse and Kasabian both got a brace of awards. Winners as follows:
Godlike Genius: Paul Weller
Outstanding Contribution To Music: The Specials
Best British Band: Muse
Best International Band: Paramore
Best Solo Artist: Jamie T
Best New Band: Bombay Bicycle Club
Best Live Band: Arctic Monkeys
Best Album: Kasabian – West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
Best Track: The Big Pink – 'Dominos'
Best Video: Biffy Clyro – 'The Captain'
Best Live Event: Blur at Hyde Park
Best Festival: Glastonbury
Best Dancefloor Filler: La Roux – 'In For The Kill' (Skream Remix)
Good track, shame he wasn't even invited.
[Some stuff about TV, films and DVDs which we edited out on grounds of interest]
Giving It Back Fan Award: Lily Allen for her Twitter ticket treasure hunt. N.B: Unbelievably, Vampire Weekend were nominated for this award for giving away 'Horchata' from Contra. Never let it be said that musicians are all take take take.
Hero Of The Year: Rage Against The Machine
Villain Of The Year: Kanye West
Best Dressed Winner: Lady Gaga
Worst Dressed: Lady Gaga
Worst Album: The Jonas Brothers – Lines Vines Trying Times
Worst Band: JLS (surely some mistake?)EDIT: It was a mistake, the worst band were in fact the Jonas Brothers, taking their total to two.
[Some stuff about hottest man and woman which we excluded for interest reasons]
Best Website: Muse.mu
Best Album Artwork: Kasabian – West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
Best Band Blog: Radiohead for Dead Air Space
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
So those were the winners. Interested in seeing photos from the event? You can. Go here and have a quick browse at who turned up and who didn't. Anyone want to put a fiver on what year Kasabian win the 'Special Contribution To Music' award? I'm going out on a whim and say 2015.

It's very rock establishment, isn't it?
I suppose it keeps their profile up and whatnot, and I'm sure the night is a good larf, but it doesn't really seem to have much conviction behind it if there really has been some sort of line drawn since the last editor left. But I mean, that bunch of acts - it's just the Brits sans the reality TV chumps, isn't it..?
I know we always have the debate about whether the magazine
attracts the punters it writes for, but these are voted for by the readers, not the magazine staff.
(apart from the Phillip Hall award, which went to the Drums)
Quick question: Who won the worst band? Was it JLS or the Jonas Brothers? I've seen both reported.
oh it's ALL voted for by readers?
fair enough, then, I suppose.
Apart from the Phillip Hall On Award, yes.
As I say, there is an argument to be made that a magazine attracts the readers it writes for, but don't forget that the Oasis covers are still the highest-selling issues, whatever the content.
I think that Krissi Murrison has really done a good job since she took over, the writing is sharper, the pieces have more depth to them, and the range of music has grown a lot. My only worry is that Conor McNicolas actually knew the market better, and knew that a magazine like that would fail.
oh, and the lifetime achievement awards too.
They're not via a public vote either.
yeah, hard to say
I dunno. The funny thing about NME is that quite a lot of my friends write or work for it, so I'm very aware that there's decent stuff going on in there, but I don't really see why I'd buy it. I suppose it's probably not aimed at me (I'm 28), but given it's a thin publication which inevitably has a band that I don't like on the splash, it doesn't seem worth parting cash to read a couple of good articles inside.
Given I copied and pasted it all from the NME.com website...
...I'm going to say JLS. Jonas Brothers won worst album, as far as I know...
Well, the NME have since corrected their website in that case.
Jonas Brothers are down as having won worst album and worst band award.
FYI - Matt Bellamy doesn't live in France. He never did. It was Italy. And he doesn't live there anymore either. He lives in London now.
And Starlight, whilst popular is probably the least Muse sounding song they've done. Obviously that's why you like it (if you don't like their other stuff).
Saying Matt Bellamy knows his music is shit, is a pretty silly comment to make. He lives for his music, and has done since he was 10 years old. I seriously doubt he thinks what he makes is crap. He's somewhat of a perfectionist, so there's no way he'd produce shit music and then try to sell it.
If you don't like it, fair play. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. But them being voted Best Live Band two years in a row, Best British Band this year as well as tons of other awards from all over the world, suggests that Muse are doing something right. Fact.
I'm not sure what you see wrong with their attitude either. They're one of the most down-to-earth bands I've known in a long time. They don't go around proclaiming to be better than Jesus, or The Beatles. They don't diss other bands. They're good to their fans.
Anyway.

Don't get me wrong
I like Muse. But I've never got to the stage of over-zealous, frothing-at-the-mouth fan.
They're becoming less and less relevant with every album they release.
I agree with this ...
ironic they won Best British Band award when their best albums are behind them.
