Covers of covers are dangerous things. Odd things, too. Is there a logic behind it? No, probably not. A good idea? Sometimes yes, sometimes not. To jump to the chase, here's the new OFFICIAL video for current buzz-band The xx's 'remix' of Florence + The Machine's cover of the grammatically incorrect Candi Staton song 'You Got The Love'.
It's technically a remix, but as you can hear, the band have added their own vocals into the mix, making it more of a cover. Anyhow, it looks like Florence forgot her gym kit when they were shooting the video so they made her do it in some tatty clothing from the lost property basket, which is a shame - unless you happen to be a fan of female legs.
You may have heard it before as it was released to the world on Friday, but here it is anyway.
Thoughts? My mate says it's a bit underwhelming and I'm perfectly inclined to agree with him. Too much too soon for The xx? Maybe they should stick to what they do best...It's available to download from November 15, in case you were wondering...

I really
WANTED to like this.
amazing
without sounding like a topman consuming pendulum fan... this is actually a 'proper' dubstep* tune - and ofcourse it scores points for having minimal florence bombast all over it.
*you know like, rival schools and fugazi and stuff are proper EMO, and now we get My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy being the New Emo... well the same thing's happened with Dubstep, kind of.
true Dubstep, who you might know of... Burial, Joy Orbison, Ben UFO?
not Rusko, not Skream and NOT chase and status
Love it!
I thought Florence's cover was a rather drab version of the original. Although her voice is strong it just wasn't quite right for this song. This is after all a song about Jesus (yeah, bet you weren't thinking that back in the 90s in the middle of Ibiza!) I think anyone trying to cover this needs that booming gospel vocal.
However the XX version completely changed my mind. They've turned the tune inside out, and round and round and then...dah, dah! Look what we just did. Bet you weren't expecting that then.
By the way the video is just a recut of the original - not very interesting, although Flo always has nice knickers!
what you on about...
'not Rusko, not Skream and NOT chase and status'
they make dubstep they probibly make the most popular kind as well and been at it for years. A lot of its not my thing but it sure is dubstep.
and are you trying to say that this xx remix is dubstep as well...
but anyway I think this tune sucks but only beacuse of Florance I can't stand her voice its horrible and it doesn't work with the xx's voices either. The beat is cool he can work a good lil remix but this doesn't really cut it not compared to his own basic space remix.
establishing authenticity in music is an absurd task in the first place
but if you want to get bogged down in that, considering skreams first record came out in 2003, im struggling to see how he's somehow lacking in "troo dub" credentials
on the issue, this remix just works. its just nice.
The Longcut still have the version of this song
This remix is pretty crap
....just sayin'
loved the song for a while
video has ruined it though...
