In a break from news about ridiculous marketing gimmicks to sell albums (Health, Ryan Adams already did that t-shirt thing forever ago!) and talk of the record industry being as doomed as Friendster, we thought this chart news might shock you as much as it did us.
Music industry trade magazine Music Week is today reporting that Paramore look rather likely to have their first number one album this coming Sunday.
brand new eyes (yes, it is meant to be in lower case!), which came out in the UK yesterday on the Fueled By Ramen label (is it wrong to call them the Motown of Emo?), has already topped the Twitter trending chart today (basically that means it was the most posted about set of words, which, is like, nerderrificly great) but, like, selling actual records ceedees is what's really important. And yup, yesterday they sold around 8,000 "units" more than Madonna (last week's number 1 longplayer) according to early retail reports.
brand new eyes sold a whopping 23,500 "units" yesterday, according to Music Week's retail chart sources. That's a bit bloody good innit for one of them "the emo" bands the prime-time tv soaps and Daily Mail warned us about?
Actually, maybe these sales shouldn't be so surprising as brand new eyes scored an 8/10 review this morning from DiS and even in a first listen review by me it got a 9/10, and, like, I hate everything (which is probably why I love emo bands with big songs that sound not unlike Refused writing songs for Kelly Clarkson quite so much). Album of the year? Just a guilty pleasure? Not even heard it yet? Get ye to this Spotify link.
Anyway, I wonder what nonsense that chap from Wavves (the P.Doherty of nofi?) got up to last night...

not really a surprise
massive pop rock band release album; have song on biggest teenage girl film phenomenon in decades soundtrack...i'd be shocked if they didn't go top 5.
that would make pete wentz the barry gordy of emo
and that just wouldn't be right
is this news?
maybe not but the volume of records they shifted in a day is pretty impressive. animal collective did that in a week in america and it was one of the hyped records of the moment, etc...
this is quite surprising innit
an album that you'd expect to be very popular amongst derr yoot but not anyone over the age of 20. To succeed in a chart which is ruled by people over 20 and reaps virtually nothing from the younger listeners (who wouldn't buy a CD if you forced them at gunpoint).
nah, I mean good for them
and of course it's news that an album the DiS has championed is doing well. But I don't think it's really that surprising, and er, yeah, the fact a major label punk-pop band has outsold a still fairly leftfield indie band is certainly nothing to really be gobsmacked about.
But yeah, there's always that moment of victory when a fave band tops the charts, it's a nice feeling.
Internetz is not killing music
that was my original headline
Hayley looks irresistible on that picture.
Sorry to reduce it to this.
what's with the good reviews?
the album is garbage.
same goes for the new AFI album, insipid and completely forgettable.
Had Animal Collective had the same exposure as Paramore though
with previous albums? AC have been lauded by critics for ages but its only now that you'll hear them in HMV wheareas, well, Paramore were on a Guitar Hero game, which, as we know, is the real measure of success these days :/
