Geoff Barrow of Portishead fame formed Beak> with fellow Bristolians Matt Williams and Billy Fuller in January this year. It was news which surely watered mouths and whetted appetites the world over.
The good news for you this week is that they've since recorded their self-titled debut and have made parts of it available for streaming. It's official physical release date - through Invada - is October 19, but you can listen to some of it on their official website.
The record was recorded live in one room with absolutely no overdubs or repair with the band only using edits to create their arrangements. Which may sound a bit, well, anal but when you hear the end-product you'll believe it was worth it. More than. It was all written pretty swiftly, too, over 12 days in SOA's studio in Bristol which is almost hard to believe given Portishead's releases over the past millennia.
First thoughts? Well done for completely ripping off The Horrors.
A limited edition box set version of the record will be available to order from the Invada website. This LE will contain a CD of the album, a LE CD, 12" vinyl with two bonus tracks and a t-shirt, which you can wear at your leisure.
You can pre-order your copies from here and here.
You can also watch five whole minutes of Beak> in the studio, performing 'Iron Acton'.
Beak> will be featuring at the 10 Years of ATP Festival, too. We believe that to be their first ever live show, so could be quite special, y'hear?

"First thoughts? Well done for completely ripping off The Horrors."
ARE YOU JOKING?!
this rhythm was popularised by the band Can. the horrors hold absolutely no claim to it, for they ripped it off. time to pick up some music history, mr slater. and geoff has been a well known krautrock supporter for many years, so im sure he was the one who turned the horrors onto zee germans.

DON'T BE DAFT!!!!!!!
"Sea Within A Sea" is "Mother Sky" by CAN, which was recorded nearly forty years ago! Citizens arrest?? I don't think so Mr McEnroe.... this Beak> outfit are making some of the best new music I've heard in ages.... looking forward to the show at All Tomorrows Parties in December chaps!
Can aside.
The bassline reminds me of 'High Rise' by Ladytron...
