Mercury rising: nominees report massive sales boost
Whether you agreed with the decision to award Elbow the 'Prize or not (DiS is on the fence, but, well, isn't it supposed to reward innovation?), one thing is clear: Mercury nominations = more moolah.
On average, say Reuters, the nominees have seen a 500% increase in sales since last week's ceremony - the biggest hike since the Mercury began 17 years ago - with Burial's Untrue racking up a mammoth gain of 1004%. All of which translates to chart success: the winning LP, Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid, climbed 54 places to #7 in the Official UK Album Chart (a 688% sales increase).
Gennaro Castaldo of HMV, de facto talking head in all things sales related, had this to say:
"A lot of music fans will be aware of [Elbow] and their music, but may not have bought one of their albums before. The band look set to be one of the biggest ever beneficiaries of winning a Nationwide Mercury Prize when measured in commercial terms."

DiS' guide to a cracking Easter
good for them :)
elbow deserve it.
It should be pointed out
that, for example, a 1004% increase in sales doesn't mean a lot if the album was only selling 2 copies a week to start with...
This is really good for the band
but i cant help but think the british public are lemmings and only buying the album because it won this award.
But its a good thing.
I was thinking that
I mean Buril got a 1004% increase in sales which is a bigger % than Elbow yet Elbow managed to get in the top 10 and Burial I persume didn't and sold around 11 copies...
Good on both of them I'm sure they will find alot of new fans and places in peoples hearts.
I've been working on a cocktail
called 'I'm really glad someone finally took notice of Elbow and gave them the credit they deserve'.
Next single ftw
Untrue is at #58
So if Elbow sold 10,000 to get to #7 they sold about 1,500 when at #61. Assuming Burial sold a similar number to get to #58 the following week, they sold about 150 the week before the Mercurys
That Kele!
First his mercury's in retrograde, now it's rising! When will he make up his mind?
Burial
Wasn't actually a bad seller before the mercurys. It was at number 78 when i worked at HMV, which considering the nature of the album [dub step?], is actually, really quite good.
Elbow may not be deserving?
If someone isn't deserving, it's Burial.
I didn't think the list of nominees was very good, but from the list of nominees this year, Elbow is a deserving winner. I can't really say that about Burial.
