Marking the ten year anniversary of its release, Mansun frontman Paul Draper has revealed all about the making of the band's epic-rock/prog-rock/brit-pop/indie masterpiece (DELETE AS APPROPRIATE) Six, in a lengthy two-part posting to his mailing list.
Revelations include the swiping of most of the song's lyrical ideas from the 'mobile library' of guitarist Dominic Chad (aka a nylon sports bag) who was in no way responsible for the title of the album, although he happened to be reading Now We Are Six by A A Milne at the time. Draper also refutes the ides that the record was supposed to be a prog-rock album: 'It was just a product of the songwriting and recording processes intertwining', he says, and muses that he should have titled it 'about 30 little pieces of music'
Calling it 'commercial suicide, but artistically satisfying', Draper provides a track-by-track account of the laborious recording process which was all done on analogue equipment, musing that 'there would be no point in making a record like 'Six' in this digital age, it would be all to easy to do with todays computer technology'.
He also reveals rejected material from the Mansun sessions that had been intended to be released as second CD to the album Kleptomania, entitled THE DEAD FLOWERS REJECT PROJECT.

Great record!
..and very epic. It takes a few listen until you get into it tho. It's a bit complex but rewarding.
Best record of the 90s
Six is easily the best record of the 90s. I love The Dead Flowers Reject project - if only they had released it! Long live Mansun, the most underrated band the UK has ever produced.
The magic never fades
When I was One,
I had just begun.
When I was Two,
I was hardly new.
When I was Three,
I was barely me.
When I was Four,
I was not much more.
When I was Five,
I was just alive.
But now I am Six, I'm as clever as clever.
So I think I'll be Six now forever and ever.
Best record ever!
The blog is just brilliant! i've been listenning all the tracks of Mansun while reading the blog again and again.
If you've not heard it yet, buy it today!
Simply one of the best albums you will ever hear by a band still sadly missed. The last great analogue record ever made. Buy it on vinyl and blow your mind...
Is it me
Or why so much fuss about this record? I thought it was pretty dismal the first time round and I am at a total loss as to why there's so much press about the fact that it's 10 years since it came out?
Not to sound like a grumpy 14 year old but "Ooooh big wow".
Great Album
Yes it is you. Have you never heard of different tastes? Not everyone can like every record/band. In fact all bands have more people that dislike them than like them, that's life.
The sad part is posting about bands you don't like when you should be using your energy in a positive fashion posting on band blogs/threads you do like.
So long as there's even one person other than the band who loves the album then it's valid, and as it's such a great yet complicated album of course it's going to be less popular than *insert big bland pop record here*, doesn't mean it wasn't a landmark in UK music releases of the 90s and very influential (ask Blur and Radiohead!).
Sad thing?
Sorry you're completely correct. You're right. I shouldn't come on here and spoil that party. I'll exit stage left now shall I? All I'm saying is I don't understand why THIS record is getting all the fuss when there were quite a few records that came out at that time which deserve recognition as well I feel.
IT'S JUST AN OPINION, JOHN
Excellent reading
Amazing to hear how this record was made, especially considering it was pretty much entirely an analogue creation. The level of thought and creativity put into Six puts most other bands to shame!
Great stuff
Seriously weird and brilliant album this. I've never understood half of it, despite lots of listens. Will be interesting to learn more
It's
a bloooooooody long blog tho.
Great read but I had to skip a lot of it. I do like the bits where Paul seems to shout at himself and does admit to digressing several times... ;->
Great record too, and I really hope there might be a 10th anniversary edition with loads of extras, Dead Flower Rejects and vast sleeve notes etc.
yes
You are totally correct, there are plenty of other albums that also deserve 10th anniversarys... who said differently? If they get them or not is down to the artist/record company, you can't hold it against one Band/Man just because they got off their arse and did something extra for their fans (even years after splitting up!).
I have no problem with you not liking Six but you seem to miss the point that so long as there's at least one person (and from the look of it there's hundreds/thousands) who care about the album then it's not really up to you to decide whether it's worth it or not is it?
And for the record, may classic albums got re-issed (Parklife etc) on the tenth anny, Six didn't, Six has not got a lot of hype or fanfare it's merely it's main creator telling the fans a little about the album which we (as fans) are grateful for. I really can't see how you can hold anything against him or us for that. It's nothing to do with other artists, if they don't or do celebrate it that's up to them. Maybe lobby your favourite bands into being as decent as Paul Draper was by sharing so much info, I doubt most would bother.
Thanks
Joint Favourite Album of All Time
Along with Mansun's first album 'Attack of the Grey Lantern'. Together they make a perfect (but different) listening experience. One of the best songwriters and singers to come from the UK in the 90's. And one of the best UK albums ever. It's going to take a few years for doubters to understand but one day it will be a classic (maybe cult classic) but a classic nonetheless.
Okay
I have given some consideration to your point above...
My life is officially more enhanced now I have taken on board your zen-like positive attitude.
Thanks. I was lost in the woods of negativity before, you see.
I always enjoyed Attack of the Grey Lantern more
I've been listening to this recently and it still feels as though it flits between the genius and the absurd. There is nothing wrong with that, mind
Yeah I'm sure it will be!
I think you might be right. It's funny that only the British Magazines seemed to dislike the band/the record. And readers always seem to follow because it's pretty fun to hate bands. And also that's a great way to sell the magazines. But now it seems that there are people who are not that prejudiced and make their own opinions. And I like those kind of people.
Come on. Open your mind and give the record a chance. Forget what you might have heard.
haha
Thanks for helping to boost the article with your post count. It's all helping to make it more visible so please continue twisting meanings to suit your needs. :)
Oh, bore off
seriously. The whole point of DiS is that it's about discussing music and music news. You're the one twisting the meaning here sunshine.
And as for post counts - wut???
Utter Genius
This is amazing to actually see that after all these years Six is still making some kind of impact.
Love it or hate it, you can't deny it's a masterpeice and in yrs to come, people will hear this and will say the same.
Mansun were underrated and taken the piss out of but lucky for us, they never took it seriously or else I think they would have broken up way before they did.
Paul is amazing in every way. His vision for Six was a complete mind fuck. A complete and utter right turn in what was popular at the time was a brilliant move.
Right, I'm going cus I'm waffling.
LONG LIVE MANSUN!! xx
btw, thanks to all those who added themselves on Paul's mailing list. Much appreciated x

Josh, why not go to that village thats looking for an IDIOT. (this is a MUSIC forum)
finchleydisco
I have just realised who you really are, only Eric Morecombe called people SUNSHINE.
80s
Hmm. I thought about this. There are some candidates for album of the 80s:
Smiths - Any one you want, really.
Michael Jackson - Again, take your pick.
ABC - Lexicon of Love
Associates - Sulk
Bowie - Scary Monsters (just makes it in)
Human League - Dare
That would be appropriate
From the blog:
"You see there was a lot of irony in those first 2 Mansun albums, but rock n roll and irony just don't mix, people don't get it. (Except for Achtung Baby, of course.)"
Wow
It's great that PD is prepared to write such a massively in depth account. I can't think of many other artists who are prepared to forensically deconstruct their work like this. More great revelations:
- Negative is about a mortgage application.
- Shotgun is the theme for an imaginary Hanna Barbera cartoon.
- Fall Out was Mansun's response to Bitter Sweet Symphony.

Read the blog very carefully, did anyonelse notice Stove was never mentioned? Maybe the rumours over the years have been true, Stove couldent play the Bass and session men(or Draper himself) played on the albums? Somebody told me years ago that was the case!
studio
i think its fairly common knowledge mansun were a three piece in the studio
Stove
Kleptomania probably referes to Stove King outside the studio, after all thats why he was sacked , allegedly
ohh bugger
it's nothing to do with the fact that Stove wanted the Rock Star life but without the hard work??
If he'd had put his mind to it im damn sure he would have been a great bass player but instead he decided to fuck about.
Shame :( x

Someone left the Stove on...
not allegedly.
Stove nicked money (hundreds of thousands apparently from the mansun account). Was sacked. Band split for that and probably many other reasons that had accumulated over the years.
Stove didn't play bass on MOST of the records (if any?).
He was definitely into the idea of being a pop/rock star (watch the vids he's the one posing, lots of time with his shirt off, the most while Paul / Chad are just cool/chilled out)
..but Chad and esp Paul put in lots of hard work in Mansun while Stove wouldn't or couldn't as it transpired. It was a major problem for me finding this out as I was never that keen on Stove to begin with, the other 3 are great musicians and people.
wasn't
It *wasn't* a major problem for me finding this out, not was as I put above!
yea but
no-one has never confirmed or denied it as Paul, Chad and Andie refuse to talk about the situation with Stove.
Its just the way maybe Paul has hinted at it but never said anything cus he's so pissed about it still seen as they were best buds x
