Sister Ray goes into administration

Music Week has reported that the infamous London-based independent record store Sister Ray has gone into administration.

The shop – located on Soho's Berwick Street – will continue with trade whilst administrators, Andy Pear and Ian Cadlock of Tenon Recovery, find suitors. They, with owners Neil Brown and Phil Barton, remain confident that a sale will be secured in the coming weeks, with Cadlock stating:

“This is a unique business with a truly global reputation and we are doing everything possible to ensure that Sister Ray is preserved for music fans worldwide.”

More news as we get it.

not as good

as select-a-disc. but still a bummer.

Why "infamous"?

Though I had been wondering how places like this had managed to stay alive recently.

Ah, the heady nostalgia of ordering things 15 years ago from the Sister Ray classified in the back in NME.

Selecta-disc = sister ray

Sister Ray bought Selecta disc a few years ago and moved itself into the property (from down the road on Berwick Street).

So yes, essentially, it is Select-a-Disc's store in administration.
x

true

but they had different stock, and lay out....

FUCK

I get stuff from there all the time. They're pretty good, very similar to the Selectadisc in Nottingham (obviously) and they pretty much always have what I want. And some rare cheap gems.

If I had the money I'd buy it.

Huh?

The staff of both stores merged.

Select-a-disc was good and all but Sister Ray brought in a lot of old vinyl stock which is great in my eyes.

blimey

i took Slash shopping at Shades. </nostalgia>

top piece, that.

bf

That's the opposite of my experience.

yes

me too

balls...

puregroove goes shitty, sister ray into administration :(

i ordered from these guys

constantly from the ad in the back of the NME, they always had the coolest stuff you couldnt find in the megastores or whatever. When i got my copy of the first Godspeed you black emperor album in the post, there was a sticky label on the invoice that said 'this is something truly special, you will love it'.

A real shame.

Legend

Shades was THE shop for the early 80's Metal Head. Used to love my trips up there.

^^what happened?

did you realise you werent in Saint Etienne after all?

ZING!!!

it's sad but not suprising

that they pulled the plug.

I worked in Selectadisc and have many good stories from that shop - in response to all the staff hating, perhaps we didn't always make the effort but those who didn't take it personally saw the lighter side as well.

R.I.P. Selectadisc/Sister Ray

gosh, I hope someone saves it!

I love this shop :(

Mr CD died too

but this is much worse, I try and buy all my new releases there! Berwick Street is losing it's record stores too fast.

Agreed on Pure Groove as well - it just isn't going to last in the middle of nowhere stocking only 100 CDs.

sad news

I'd like to think, considering the amount of money I used to spend there, that if I hadn't have moved out of London that this wouldn't be happening.

And Mr CD has gone aswell :(

Did i also hear rightly that Steve's Sounds nr Leicester Sq isn't there anymore either?

..

great. I hope everyone downloading realises that if THEY DON'T BUY THINGS, THINGS WON'T GET MADE. It really is as simple as that. Pretty soon the only music that will get funded and made will be a diet of shit R and B and Topshop indie. Stuff that is guaranteed to sell.

All because some snotty little student doesn't see why he should have to spend his money.

select a disc nottingham

Sister Ray recently bought Selct a disc in Notts, does this mean they are now in admin?

it's usually sad when a 'proper' record shop dies

but in this case I couldn't care less. I boycotted Selectadisc years ago because the staff were up-their-own-arse pricks who hated women. If Sister Ray had the old Selectadisc staff, then good riddance to the old shithole.

I'll bite

The industry's gotta change. And good music will never stop being made. For one thing, it no longer costs fifty grand to record a decent sounding record.

bf

this is amazing- I boycotted Sister Ray probably ten years ago when it was across the street, after they basically laughed me out of the shop cos I wanted to hear a bit of a track.

Never went back til they started occupying the old selectadisc pitch, and forgot- bought something, and the guy was a total arsehole- at which point it all came flooding back to me.

I only used to go in there from then on to laugh at the ridiculous prices of their muck common fifties and sixties singles they went to the effort of colour photocopying in case someone fancied half inching a knackered copy of 'puppet on a string' or some other such wonder

Does anyone know if this is the same for Notts selectadisc?

They obviously aren't doing as well as before as they made the shop half the size fairly recently but would be sad to see it go.

good for you

the staff in the original sister ray store were a hell of a lot more helpful to me than the staff in select-a-disc.

:D

nottingham

I used to love selectadisc when i was a student and around that time they expanded it i think. To see it it downsize is a shame and closure would be tragic. Great record shop and always very friendly. They would always give you the heads up on up and coming bands worth seeing at the Social as well.

Nottingham Selectadisc was my favourite shop

when I was at uni. I found the staff friendly and the stock good and reasonably priced.

Since moving to London I have not found anywhere as good except for Rough Trade East, and nowhere at all that had as good a selection of really cheap second hand vinyl.

Sister Ray is pretty good and I never had a problem with the staff but there have been a few times when I couldn't get what I was looking for.

I'll be sad if either of the shops go though. Independent record stores closing like this is only a bad thing. I'm still mourning the loss of Fopp.

Ahhh Berwick Street...

Used to go into all those record shops like a fanatic, now I can't remember the last time I bought anything from a record shop the last time. Why buy it there when it's cheaper and easier on the internet? I also like to buy straight from the artist.

:(

upsetting

damn you rough trade

soon

there will be nothing left

ANYWHERE

shame.

got some good things from there back int he day

No

I work in the industry and Notts Selectadisc is trading as selectadisc 2007 limited and Sister Ray is sister ray limited so they are both separate companies!!!

I went in today

there's some awesome stuff in there, and the prices aren't too bad. The staff have never seemed that friendly though.

women hating?

I worked at Selectadisc for 10 years and met my husband there. I am pretty sure he doesn't hate women, neither do I and nor did the other female staff including our female boss.

the reason I make that accusation

was that my wife was twice totally blanked there whilst trying to buy a CD, whilst the blokes behind the counter served the men behind her. This happening once could have been put down to stupidity or negligence, but twice makes you wonder, eh?

Idiots

Twice I rang up and placed a phone order with these sloppy fools. Both times, my stuff didn't turn up. I rang and asked where it was and they said "Oh you gave us the wrong card number". This was a blatant lie as they repeated the number to me once I had given it to them. Also, why didn't they ring me back to say they couldn't process the payment? I tell you why, they're a bunch of jerks. No wonder they're going into administration.

They weren't overpriced, I'll give them that, but neither were they bargainsville by any stretch.

.

hi all - why do you think it went into administration?

i'm curious, i'm doing a study on independent record stores. any feedback more than welcome:
a. too much competition
b. not enough people buying in store
c. bad business choices/management
