Radiohead vs Prince: digital wars get funky

You may remember the general mirth that emanated from reports that Prince covered Radiohead classic 'Creep' at the L.A. Coachella festival this year.

Now the mirth continues via the mouths of Radiohead, who have demanded that that diminutive purple monster unblock footage of the event from YouTube.

In a recent interview (from where, we don't know, but it happened, Thom Yorke revealed he was informed of Prince's performance by way of a text message and thought it was "hilarious." Guitarist Ed O'Brien, pitched in saying that he had been prevented from seeing Prince's version of their song due to Prince blocking the footage.

"Really? He's blocked it?" countered Yorke, "Surely we should block it. Hang on a moment."

Yorke added: "Well, tell him to unblock it. It's our ... song."

Possibly this brings about an interesting discussion on digital rights in relation to intellectual property vs performance and image rights. A PRS vs MCPS, as it were.

Or maybe it's just funny.

Watch: (disclaimer; annoying people yelping in the audible foreground)

another day

another radiohead "story"

another day

another boring user complaining about a news article

^

...

...but... Prince is a silky smooth pimp daddy. What could he possibly see in this song?

Prince butchered that song

And to save the embarassment of millions watching it and laughing, he wants it banned.

Purple dwarf.

I quite liked it!

Reminded me a little of Apollo Heights

hahahahahahahaha

LY thom!

.

terrible

Prince >>>>>>>>>>>> Radiohead

simple really.

Argh!

Two artists I love dearly but Thom Yorke's got a serious point. Prince doesn't have the right to ban this performance 'cuz it's not his song, regardless of whether he performed it or not.

Bollocks of course

Prince has every right to try to prevent the release of unauthorised versions of his performance.

I seem to remember that Radiohead are not very happy with their old record label for releasing a Greatest Hits album against their wishes.

Yes, but they haven't blocked it

I don't see why Prince is blocking it anyway. What exactly is he achieving?

He's a sexy

Motherblocker!

Another day

Another SHIFT + 6

Its a video of himself

he has every right to request that it is not allowed on you tube. End of.

Err. No. That's not how it works.

Also, by trying to have it blocked he's raised the profile of the video and ensured it's widespread availability.

If he wasn't such a Luddite I'd call it cunning, but he's really just re-treading the steps of major labels circa 5 years ago

Prince is such a twat.

but also such a hero.

Sounds more like

Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor by Eels than Creep...

is that even a compliment?

well you would...

... when you're a funny little purple dwarf man.

not really

I just find Radiohead do very very little for me and I find the "LIKE THEM OR DIE PROLE!" attitude towards them quite annoying. Whereas Prince is a living genius.

This is all of course just my opinion. As was your response. Lest we forget that this is but a mere messageboard.

how is that not how it works?

please explain. And I fail to see how he benefits from 'raising the profile' of the video - theres no financial gain exactly, and its not as if he needs to promote the fact that he exists...
