DiStroyers? Are we to blame for Sailors' split?

Newcastle/Leeds-based fiery four-piece Sailors are to split, just weeks after DiS had the band support Johnny Foreigner at our first DiScover Club of 2008.
Bad news indeed, especially considering how ace their self-titled seven-inch of last year was (review), and how great they were down at the Arts Club. Worryingly, it could be that DiS has played a part in the band's split.
Quoting a live review by DiS scribe Joshua Cole, the band's Nicholas Jones has posted the following at Collective Zine:
"Sailors are breaking up. We’re playing our final show at the Cockpit in Leeds on 1st March.
"Our decision to split is resultant of the negi-vibes we have been subject to from the very internet opinionists from whom we sought approval. Here are some of the words that have contributed to our demise…
"Joshua Cole’s summary of our set at Gringo 10 for drownedinsound.com… '[The group Designer Babies are] tricky to describe, fantastic to experience. Unlike young noisy rockers Sailors who, I’m sorry to say, put the fart in arty farty.'"
Ouch! Jones also references a review from Dusted. So, like, OMG? Or shouldn't we be feeling guilty right now? Can a few words on a website really cause a bands to break up, or are Sailors pointing fingers where they can here, to find a reason to go their own ways? (Jon and Sophie are to form another band, since you asked.) Or, is it just a funny? Tongue in cheek, yup.
I really liked 'em, whatever way. Ne'er mind eh. Listen on MySpace HERE.

Why do they need 'approval'?
Dickheads
Yup
You should be proud.
Probably for the best to be honest
I mean no band is gonna ever go entirely without bad reviews and if the bad reviews get to 'em that much maybe it's a bad idea for them to keep going.
I sympathise to an extent - for some reason negative comments always resound stronger and for longer than positive comments. But given that this recent exposure has obviously come on the back of positive comments then they should try to focus on those instead.
But if they find that impossible they probably are best off out of it.
wahh wahh wahh
its not like Josh laid into them, was just a jokey off-hand dismissal.
they were a good band, and i hope this is tongue in cheek
Never heard of them, but they can fuck off.
Bunch of whiny cunts.
a better headline would have been
'Splitting Sailors, are we the DiStroyers?'.
What would Rollins do?
Man up you pussies!
The nature of any creative venture
is that when you put it into the public domain it is open to criticism. If you don't want that, then keep your work private
and seeing as they read their own press
they will be sobbing into their keyboards reading all the "nasty" comments. I agree, they need(ed) to develop a fucking backbone and they've ultimately come across as very shallow and materialistic. If you're making music that you really really believe in and people seem to like you then what reviewers say shouldn't matter. If you're splitting your band due to "lack of critical acclaim" as another band did then I think you're doomed from the start, just like if you intentionally sit down to write a million selling pop song (controversycentric), surely you can't premeditate it?
Anyway Sailors, fuck off and listen to ARE Weapons "nobody likes us and we don't care" on repeat until you get the point.
i am
DiSsapointed
..
they are taking the piss. I am sure they don't care what some faceless reviewer has to say about them. they were bloody good though.
Bunch of pussies
They expect everyone to fall at their laps and praise everything they do? If they cant take critisicm, they are in the wrong business.
got to be a joke
in the collective thread someone calls it a joke and the guy from the band says "its not a joke - we really are splitting up"
ie - the reviews thing was a joke
I wish
the same happened to Starsailor
josh
has a nice face
we got a review
which said, no joke, that we were "worse than AIDS". and we're still here.
and now we're in rock sound. 8/10 and all that. HA.
That's actually brilliant...........
If I read that a band was 'worse than AIDS' I would view it as a triumphant endorsement and proof that they were worthy of closer inspection!
After the first gig I ever did.
Some guy came up to me and said "you were absolutely shit but the audience seemed to love you".
Part of me wants that as an epitaph...
haha yeah
we thought it was ace and put it on the website and on the press release for a bit.
Well I gave the Feeling's album 1/10
a year or so back.
Can't they use that as an excuse to split up too?
Interesting ...
... use of the word "resultant"
Perhaps they meant "result"?
Or perhaps it was their arty farty interpretation of the english language.
Joke
I THINK IT'S A JOKE YOU FUCKING RETARDS
idiots
you lot are a bunch of fucking morons. any person with an *ounce* of common sense could tell that it was tongue in cheek
^ this ^
Save the 'fucking retards'. Play nice, Chris.
Go see Sailors' last show. They're fuggin' ace.
sorry
But come on. Windowlickers.
i thought
readers of drowned in sound were, on the whole, perceptive to the point where they could at least realise its completely tongue in cheek, and probably a dig at the rubbish reasons some other bands give for splitting up.
I still wish The Feeling would split up
and would feel mighty honoured if they - or any band actually - cited my review as a reason. And I ain't joking!
Bunch of
pussies.
joke
;)
Sailors / Broken Arm
What this news article fails to do is plug Hugues and I's new band, Broken Arm. We'll be recording a few songs over the next few weeks, and can be located on the interweb at... www.myspace.com/brokenarmyo
We'll be monitoring internet commentary upon our activity closely, except our policy this time will be that if anyone writes anything less than flattering about us on the internet, we'll be round their house before they've even clicked 'Return' to slap them all over the shop.
This comment by MartinVessels demonstrates astonishing stump-dumbness...
"Interesting ...
... use of the word "resultant"
Perhaps they meant "result"?
Or perhaps it was their arty farty interpretation of the english language."
The sentence written is perfectly grammatically sound, buddy.
Hang on! Were these the first band on at the aforementioned DiS show?
If they were, how annoying, Sailors were the only band there with any noticeable talent.
If otherwise, complete 'meh' at this one.
I don't think so.
Super Tennis were the first band on at the DiS Sailors showed at, I guess making this news complete 'meh'.
yes...
...they were Super Tennis.
Shame to hear Sailors split up, I thought they were quite good at that DIS show.
