Reading and Leeds to be headlined by Americans

The first clues have emerged as to who'll be headlining this year’s Reading and Leeds festivals.
The newly sponsor-free weekend-long events will be graced by “American headliners”. Similar to Glastonbury, then, but with even less of a concern for specifics.
While he wouldn’t reveal the race, let alone the names, of those acts, event organiser Melvin Benn did talk about the recent removal of Carling from its position as festival sponsor.
"I wanted it to be - as I'm sure fans wanted it to be - slightly less corporate," Benn said, speaking to BBC 6 Music.
"I wanted to reclaim the name Reading Festival and the name Leeds Festival. I wanted them to return to their roots, so to speak.”
Benn went on to extol the virtues of festivals like Latitude, which won an award for being the most green festival last year. Reading and Leeds 2008 will aim to be more environmentally friendly than ever before, building on initiatives that arrived with some success last summer.
"At Reading and Leeds we put a 10p deposit on all the paper cups that we sold all the pints in. We had a 96% return rate on those paper cups."
Drowned in Sound fears that the removal of Carling as sponsor may have an adverse effect on those rates. Etc…

rage/metallica/killers
^ this
I really thought I'd never go back to Reading
BUT if RATM are playing I AM THERE! Just for the one day though, I can't face a weekend of evil little drunk teenagers.
If Rage play I'll do a small involuntary wee of excitement
If Metallica play it will be a big involuntary wee.
If both play, I don't want to think about what might happen.
Green Day?
MCR would be an outsider bet. Maybe R.E.M, Although they might headline one of the nights at glasto.
yeah me too
and 'tallica again would be awesome, especially if they have gone a bit more actually good on the new album...
we're
not that bad :)
Rage ?
aint that a German Metal Band ? ;-)
unfortunately i too
thought of MCR.
RATM
are heavily rumoured every year, fingers crossed they're true AGAIN.
matallica/mcr/ratm
in that order
It will be...
Counting Crows
Springsteen
Kings of Leon
Kings of Leon are a strong possibility
as they got rave reviews last year, but I though they fairly good, not much else.
People I don't want it to be:
Chillis, MCR, Smashing Pumpkins, Killers, Green day, RATM, Metallica, Foos.
People I want to see:
REM, White Stripes, Yeah yeah yeahs.
Although the headliners were crock of sh!t last year, but I still had a good time. Get some good people on the other stages late on instead, eg Tv on the radio and LCD.
Dont be daft
at reading?
Smashing Pumpkins were really good
Well it surely won't be
Chilis or Pumpkins and they both headlined last year.
My money would be on ratm, metallica and mcr.
yay, yay, boo.
LCD
Played second headline on NME stage last year. And TV On The Radio played the same slot (i think) on the carling stage the year before.
There's always a good few decent bands playing, you just have to ignore the big name headliners.
The small stages had really good late bands
!!!, LCD, Patrick Wolf, UNKLE, Biffy Clyro & to an extent Hot Hot Heat
This was more then enough to keep me entertained when the likes of RHCP and Razorlight where on.
Yes they were both brilliant as well
Probably my two highlights from the past 2 years. Just hope they get someone up at the same level this year. However it does annoy me when large amounts of my ticket money are wasted on jokers like the chilli bobbins, who have the dual annoyance of being shit and attracting wankers who wouldn't have gone otherwise.
(small note of pedentary, TVOTR were third top two years ago)
Kings of Leon
were far and away one of the best bands of the weekend, especially in a big slot on the main stage, it would be fantastic for them to headline.
My bet is on:
The Verve
Arctic Monkeys
RATM
maybe you're not
but do you shout "bollocks" and set fire to tents?
Errrr
I was not aware all three will be American. My vote now extends to:
Kings of Leon
Foo Fighters
Rage Against The Machine
but KOL have played late-on main stage slots for last 2 years
would it happen again?
I watched Jeremy Warmsley instead of the second half of the Chilis set, which was nice.
Rage and YYYs would be good.
FOB
FOB
FOB
FOB
Wentz owned this festival last year, like his entire label was on it.
I hope the no-sponsor doesn't make it anymore expensive
Especially if the line up is poor.
I guess this ruins my desperate (and unrealistic) hopes that Radiohead will play.
Smashing Pumpkins were amazing at Reading.........
in 1995 and RATM were alright whichever year it was that they headlined although their Glastonbury 94' set owned.
I'd like it to be:
Weezer, The Thermals (who will inexplicably become huge just in time to secure the slot) and a reformed At The Drive-In.
However, it'll probably be MCR, FOB and RATM on 'Metal Sunday'.
and that will be
wholesale loltimez.
Queens of The Stone Age?
c'mon...
I was waiting for your Dad to load my stuff
into his car. And by stuff I mean 8 cases of lube, a splintery wooden dildo shaped like Hugh and a beer bong. For fluids.
I want Weezer as well
tho' they still aren't headline material... their Reading 2003 set still ranks among my favourite festival memories. At one point a giant flock of birds flew over the stage forming a perfect =W= in the sky. :-))
