EMI to sack 2,000 say new owners

EMI Group have confirmed that they will cut staff by a third in order to reduce costs, resulting in the loss of around 2,000 jobs.

The swinging axe is one of a few methods the ailing and recently bought-out label is using to cut overheads, as the digital age continues to perplex the music industry.

Terra Firma, the private equity investment firm who now own EMI and its subsidiary labels, is aiming to cut expenditure by £200m a year, new chief executive Guy Hands – pictured, right – stating his belief that Terra Firma have "devised a new revolutionary structure for the group that will improve every area of the business".

But the new exec’s arrival has caused no little tumult within the corridors of EMI, as many high-profile artists stand in a state of open revolt against their new paymasters; Robbie Williams and the Verve among the revolting as Hands claims only 3% of EMI artists are profitable and seeks to put an end to multi-million dollar advances in favour of a steady wage.

i've just tried putting in an expense claim

with £10 marked in as 'fruit and flowers'. Will it pass? We shall see...

Maybe they should ask Robbie Williams for some of that £80m back...

Especially considering the only thing they've seen so far in return is 'Rudebox'

Money well spent, dicks

Goes to show

they should have never been so stupid as to give Robbie williams an £80mill contract or whatever in the first place.

£80mill - rudebaws

ha ha

The majors...

... are slowly heading back to the 1970's - commercial, safe, corporate, out of touch. Whilst the next few years will be painful, in time this should present opportunities to decent indies to fill the gaps. The market will be significantly smaller, but not necessarily any less interesting.
Having said that this decision is a real shame for a lot of good people at EMI. Having been through redundancy myself, I know how horrible it is.

Headline should've been

"Thom Yorke responsible for 2000 job losses".

^this

Yes, on the one hand, it's a shame people are losing their jobs.
On the other they gave Robbie Williams a stupid amount of money. So fuck 'em.

Robbie Williams and the Verve among the revolting

i assume and hope that's a deliberate pun.

only 3% of EMI artists are profitable

What does that say then?

yes sorry

not ha ha at the people who lost their jobs.. just at idiotic corporate pigdogs.

it says that maybe emi are losing it abit

they should stop giving obscene amounts of money to one hit wonders reality TV show contestants and washed up has beens(that just majors in general not just emi) and should help out smaller indie labels who work grass roots level to help future oasis and artic monkeys then when the bands are big enough to go on a major label the bands will remmber what the labels did to help them out when they started.

i pensolly think maybe robbie should be drop from his label his does a rude box type album again

The bbc coverage of this

was coupled with a picture of Robbie Williams sticking his tongue out.

Very insensitive, but well fucking funny.

True Story

I managed to claim back £20 spent on a glaucoma panic related eye test, some lemsip and a box of tissues, needed while recording.

I included all the recipts and did everything correctly and I guess who ever got it in the post must have thought "This is too fucked up to question. And it's Friday afternoon."

The only reason I claimed was because someone told me when I got back that because of the family history of glaucoma I could have got the test for free. BAH!
