Tony Wilson Way: Manchester street set to be re-named
It looks likely that late Factory Records founder Tony Wilson will have a street in central Manchester named after him in memoriam of the work he did for culture in the city.
Wilson, who died in August this year, is to give his name to Whitworth Street West - the road on which his Hacienda nightclub was situated.
Potential names under consideration by the council include Tony Wilson Way, Anthony H Wilson Way or Wilson Street West, reports CMU Daily.
A city council spokesman suggested that while paperwork still needs to be done for the name change to be carried out, public support for the move was high:
"We need two thirds of people to agree but I have gone round all the blocks and I am confident people will want to make history on that street".
DiScuss: is this the best way to commemorate Tony Wilson? We think s'alright. Better than some statue which he would've hated. But wouldn't a special grant, created to let groundbreaking local talent develop without commercial compromise, be more apt and useful?

why didn't they give it to John Dalton Street?
Noone can remember who he was anyway
.
changing name of a street is cheaper than an annual grant and requires less effort.
reckon I know which will win.
'special grants to let groundbreaking local talent develop'
are often a load of bollocks, awarded by people who don't have a clue. 'getting the kids off the street' and that sort of thing, like a 'rap group' who send out a 'positive message to the kids'. the road name is better.
...
i work round the corner from this street and walk past it daily. its a very busy road on which the site of the hacienda club was and now houses the hacienda apartment so i doubt anyone will notice.
yeah but
it could be the kinda thing that people like DiS, Guardian and taste-makerery types at BBC nominate whom they think is making something worthy. Rather than the Twang playing John Peel's stage, etc.
...
The best way to commemorate him would be to name every other shop, café and a complex of exclusive yuppie flats after the Hacienda.
Oh wait.
Id rather
they renamed Oxford Road, I know it leads in a vaguely in a southerly direction but the name was largely chosen because of its academic associations (it's where MU, MMU + RNCM are situated). Which Ive always found a bit cynical/pathetic.
But Whitworth Street West is much more appropriate!
go for
the adjacent Denmark Road, then
Erm, isn't Oxford Road
called so because its the A34 and it leads to Oxford?
Nah
Cambridge Street (parallel to Oxford Road) was also named for symbolic reasons.
