Q nominations: new blood?
The nominations for this year's Q awards have been announced.
Usually notable only for their stubborn insistence that Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 still chart the uppermost reaches of modern rock'n'pop, things look distinctly fresher this year.
This year, there is no Oasis. There is no Red Hot Chili Peppers. There is U2. You should never ask for too much.
Even if the likes of Liars and Animal Collective remain firmly out of setstone minds, acts such as Arctic Monkeys - who tie the lead with three nominations - at least bring some fresh air to weary limbs.

Penate, Klaxons, T - all acts that you couldn't have imagined featuring last year, even if the majority are still "gash". But how far are these nominations significant?
It's probably true that the increased presence of guitar-based indie on radios and charts is the only significant change here and, in fact, Q haven't moved the goalposts - rather the uprights have shifted to them.
Still, anything that brings Q and the NME closer together can't be a bad thing. DiScuss, if it isn't too banal...

Looking at the nominations
for best track, do these people only listen to local daytime radio or something? That lot reads like Trent FM's mid-afternoon playlist.
Why bother
with an award for best New Act and Best Breakthrough? It's not like any of the Breakthrough nominees have been trundling about for ages.
Jesus christ.
I know its Q but it still gets me angry.
ha!
ha!
as awful as ever
i cant really see much difference
In fairness...
I'm not sure Jamie T, Hard-Fi or (especially) Jack Penate count as any kind of improvement in quality.
New names maybe but still as dull a selection as ever.
confirms it for me that
kasabian really are dadrock shite, in the abscence of the usual gobby ladrck stalwarts they had to shoehorn in a fucking kasabian nomination somewhere... fucktards.
Though in this sea of mediocrity I'm glad the manics are nominated and I hope they win.
Cherry Ghost? Who...?
Best track: Manic Street Preachers - 'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough'
REALLY?? Good God.
Hmmm. I'm not sure it's that progressive to be honest. Any of these lists could easily have been constructed by Radio 1, or Top Of The Pops magazine, or something. It's mostly by-numbers indie again, isn't it?
I dunno. All awards ceremonies are naff aren't they, so I suppose it doesn't matter at all.
Most bland awards?
Are they less interesting than the Brits? My usual favourite is the best act in the world award which normally consists of those you mentioned at the beginning of the story. I wonder what U2 have done to remain in that category, you may as well put the beatles in there. Still, surprised Bjork got a nod, good work there.
Hurricane by Athlete
is far more of a concern
You know..
peeeeeeeeeeople
peeeeeeeeeeople
something something something.
Hmmm
I was at the launch party last night. Seemed to be a pattern emerging that every band that played was nominated for something, don't know why Athlete and Hard-fi are up for best track, they've hardly had them out that long.
Also U2..pfft. Why are not Arcade Fire in that category instead? They're much more interesting.
dude
have these fucking twats not heard any music this year apart from radio one??? track of the year has to be chips ahoy from the hold steady.
honestly, their diet consists of shit.
Your local radio station and Q magazine...
are probably part owned by the same company (Emap, or similar). Q are merely justifying the radio station's output helping the company and its partners earn more advertising revenue by saying, "Look how popular, yet critically acclaimed the music we play is. See how in touch we are with our audience AND those that matter in the music industry. Now give us lots of money and we'll play your incessant jingles in between these modern day cultural anthems".
They really are scraping the barrel a bit
with the 'Best Track' category. Surely there must have been a better 5 tracks than this????
I'm boycotting
any "Best Track" discussion that doesn't include a mention of 'Our Velocity' by Maximo Park. Forever.
Predictably fucking awful.
I love the Q awards because it allows me to wallow in my own bile. Although it's hard to pick out one thing that makes me more angry than usual, "Best New Act" really takes the biscuit
isn't it funny
how they wait 'til after the mercury's to announce them, in case, like, they miss out on a future mercury winning cover star.
Best Track?
And those are the nominees? Good lord.
Who is...
Jack Penate? Does he suck? I’m going with he sucks.
same shit
different year. Have U2 even picked up a sodding guitar in the past 12 months?? Oh yes, i forgot.. the Edge had to pick his guitar up to be photographed by Q for an interview. That must be it
Q = Poo.... SO WHY DO I STILL BUY IT?!?! AGGHHHH
Hang on
wheres the following awards that Q usually have?
Lifetime Legend award
Legend of a lifetime award
Lifelong Legacy Award
Musical contribution to Music Award
Legendary Contribution to the 1980's
Best Song Ever award
The Bono award for world peace award, always awarded to Bono
scraping the barrel?
i think they scraped the last bit of the barrel away years ago...and are now feet deep in the shit that the barrel was standing on
I think that is Mojo
But it is Legendary Contribution to the 1960's. I think Q would be more likely to have 50 best ....
lol
heres just a couple of last years winners....
The Who received the prestigious Q Legend Award and Primal Scream won the Q Groundbreaker award.
In a personal double whammy for Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, his classic songwriter award was presented by one of his heroes - Paul Weller.
I've long since stopped buying Q
as I felt it would tempt me to then read the Daily Mail, peruse IKEA catalogues for futons and listen to Virgin Radio.
Meh galore.
just downloaded
the top 5 songs. this is the first time i have heard any of these tracks. so...
1) manics - worse than i thought it was going to be, who are these other voices? what a bad sounding guitar, erm, sound. how do you over produce something so much that it sounds cheap? i'll listen again and see about lyrics.
2) kaisers - lalala lalala, wow, this doesn't sound much like the other kaisers...oh wait chorus does. kind of pedestrian. but the 2 seconds before the chorus sound pretty good, might work live. ooh, breakdown. i want to skip to next song but won't. how can 3 minutes sound so long?
3) athers - i've never liked athlete. this is my favourite song by them so far. and the best of the song nominations so far also. kind of bland, and forgot it was on even though i was trying to review it.
4) hard fi - apparently they rock the satellite and don't like the one way system. i like the way the hey yeah yeah refrain has a condescending laziness. who they are condescending i don't know, probably the people who buy this. oh good, it stopped.
5) muse - clearly going to be the best song because it has the most ridiculous song title and muse are the most ridiculous band on this list. i don't like them. i like this drumbeat, kind of kraftwerky, and the kazoo-a-like guitar.
vocals come in and don't ruin it shocker! i hope this gets really epic and makes me cry. wow, queen-a-liscious! if they fight to survive do you think they will win? maybe with this guitar, bass and drum prog battle that is in my ears right now. if this song doesn't win i'll do something i'll regret (probably eat too many donuts again as usual). still, it's not like it is one of the best songs of the year.
who are u2?
i think the beatles should win best new band.
Why do you all get so up in arms about this every year?
Q Magazine is for people who enjoy that type of music, hence they nominate them for their awards.
.
Manic Street Preachers - 'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough'
Kaiser Chiefs - 'Ruby'
Hard-Fi - 'Suburban Knights'
Athlete - 'Hurricane'
*sick*
U2s nomination
stinks of SHIT WE HAVENT NOMINATED THEM FOR ANYTHING ELSE SO...
not bothered
about the nominations but I'm kinda confused at the difference between 'breakthrough artist' and 'new artist'?
best tracks of the year?
that made me sick up a little
anyone
actually heard the athlete track? me neither. I'm pretty sure Q only gave their new album 2 stars, so its like they're apologising to them by nominating them
^^
Its actually quite hard to determine which track sucks worse than the others in this category!?? I will go with Ruby...only just though...
^^
You were right, i just threw up thinking about what i just said...
quote unquote
anything that brings the NME and Q closer together must be a good thing?
WHAT?
So jeremy clarkson types can be scenesters?
surely thats like saying two wrongs make a right, and clearly the case is no.all the bands they who wouldnt have been there before are all radio1 fodder.and the worst thing is its not even justifiably good.
at least the klaxons have some tunes but mika?jack penate?the enemy?the view? all awful awful bands who would be up shit creek without a paddle if it wasnt for the fact they fit a nice market niche which their company can push them into and pander to relentlessly.
i hate it when people think bands are good just because they have been bigged up.
boring
best breakthrough artists? theyre all bloody stupid london chav types

Muse
Kaiser Chiefs
The Killers
Arctic Monkeys
