Cribs: bands are rubbish
- Artists:
- The Cribs »
The Cribs have slammed the current music scene as "rubbish", drawing comparisons with the glut of copycat bands that followed in the wake of the Britpop boom almost a decade ago.
The comments follow co-frontman Ryan Jarman's declaration, later dismissed as a joke, that the "mainstream attitude of most indie bands" was a bigger threat to the planet than global warming at the band's recent Glastonbury performance.
Jarman told NME: "I think there's a couple of good bands. But I mean just that; a couple of good bands. I'm not gonna mention any names - in a good or bad way - and I'm not going to call anyone out by name. But music is rubbish right now.
He added:"There aren't any bands with ethics. Things have got how Britpop was a few years ago, with people identifying something that is popular, and just doing the same and jumping on the bandwagon."

The Prodigy: classics expanded and assessed
Wow
Is this news?
he's right you know
you know you're in trouble when The Cribs are genuinely one of the best bands in the country.
yeah
but they're not. so it's ok.
I like the Cribs
But i wish they'd have the balls to just says which bands they don't like, we all know most the stuff in the NME is shit.
I'm really shocked...
...Indie band slags off other indie bands in NME shocker!
Find an original sourec of publicity you dicks. I do like their new album by the way.
For Goodness Sake
I was there at their Glastonbury performance and his remark was so obviously tongue-in-cheek... and while most 'publications' acknowledged it as such eventually, they still made a really big deal about it. It was an onstage quip, it was funny (well, we were knee-deep in mud at the time) and that's it.
This is a dead issue.
don't get me wrong
the cribs are ace but their constant bitterness is hardly endearing, is it?
why should bands try
to be endearing? give me a luke haines anyday over a simpering cocksucker like giantfaced keane man
yes it is
it's funny
"Find an original sourec of publicity"
for one, it's quite an unintelligible sentence.
for two, you're saying that off the back of one news story? jesus christ.
At least Luke Haines is amusingly scathing
That there is Ryan Jarman accusing other bands of taking the easy copyist's way out.
Obvious point but
i'm guessing that the cribs with their average boringness they pedal are not one of the "couple of good bands" around.
Anyway I was surprised that the news source was NME, I though that this news would have been so important it would have been on reuters.
I agree
every time I read a Jarman quote these days I like them a little bit less. the new record is only half a good LP in any case.
i love the cribs
and i love them extra when they slag stuff off. it's funny and they are brilliant, ergo everything is good.
almost half of their songs are great pop songs
the other half are samey b-sides though but still i like them a lot
to be fair
not mentioning bands is a good thing, otherwise it would look like some tabloid *this band* vs *this band* thing which would be a bit wank. So good on em. Though, obvious point I guess...
Cribs in "Right on the Money" Shocker
they're right, just look a the cover of this weeks NME, DIS's regualr chart update and the shit that gets poured through radio1/xfm's transmitters
good thing not mentioning, or it would be tabloid scandal, plus, avoids tabloid publicity making them just like other shit bands
new album is still ace in my eyes, just like the last two
at Astoria other month they were also awesome!
I think they are just bitter
because, in relative terms, no-one actually buys their records, do they?
I hope
that The Cribs will make a psych-noise-progfolk-black metal triple cd-r next, cos if they want to distinguish themselves from the pack, they can't make the same record again and again. and i do like The Cribs. but i wish they would shut up sometimes.
Irony escapes the Jarmans
".....just doing the same and jumping on the band wagon"
Hmmmm, exactly what YOU have done you gimps - there is nothing original in their music whatsoever. Plus they are grunpy, drunken fuckwits whenever I see or hear them interviewed
Also, sad attempt at self promotion. Album doing poorly? Call NME, slag off other bands doing better business than them, hope to bump up own sales. Lack of ethics? I think so
I hope
they do an album about living in castles.
I disagree.
Now I don't listen to the Cribs, because I don't make much of a distinction between their music and most other bands' stuff I hear on the radio or see on TV. But there's as much good music in the world right now as there has been at any point in the last few decades. It's not in the charts, granted, but if its good, and you like it, then why care? Yer man needs to broaden his horizons and listen to something that isn't playlisted on Radio 1 or in the NME chart on MTV2.
this is like 50 cent
complaining modern rap is too violent
these clowns can barely even play their instruments, they cant sing at all, and their music is some of the most generic, conformist, route-of-least-resistance dross out there. there are very few bands less qualified to complain about the current mainstream guitar music scene being saturated with shit bands who all sound the same. they can fuck right off
also
im pretty sure if their single had reached #5 and not #17, and their album #3 and not #13, they'd be less complaints from their general direction
regardless of what you think of the Cribs:
* these clowns can barely even play their instruments
* they can't sing at all
is often the sign of some of my favourite bands.
i don't understand people like this
if you're unhappy with music in a particular scene, then look elsewhere. music isn't rubbish; indie music is rubbish.
true. but
* you can only get away barely being able to play your instruments if it suits your style of music (or if you can just make it sound good). i dont think it suits the jerky danceable strokes/franz post-punk thing cribs have going on at all. it just sounds very toilet circuit
* it's not that they can't sing like a pop idol contestant. they just plain can't sing, not even in a most-of-my-favorite-singers-cant-sing sort of way
i met gary jarman at leeds uni
at a forward russia after party.
at 2am, whilst a bit drunk, i spotted him and began an interview with 'hi..ryan jarvis..interview..yes..hello'
it didn't go that well looking back.
except
*the Cribs really aren't attempting to ape those bands that you mention.
and
*you don't know who my favourite singers are.
i do.
they're shit
.
* close enough
* well forgive me for taking a guess based on what people on this site generally listen to. on consulting your profile i found a bunch of singers who cant really sing in the traditional sense but who still know how to deliver a great vocal: carrie brownstein, aidan moffat, jamie stewart, phil elvrum. the cribs vocals are clumsy, characterless and (certainly live) frequently way off-key
why do I keep reading this headline as
cribs : are rubbish
...
pot. kettle. black. etc.
lyle: is rubbish ?
LIES LIES LIES!
no
it's true !
I think its sad
that they spoil their nice pop tunes with all this scenester hating rubbish.
Many of their songs sound the same
And come from a wave of bands that also sound the same and generally aren't that good.
I try to be open, but I don't understand the Cribs.
pfft
their new album is their most successful to date and they don't the NME to bring them extra success because they have one of the most loyal fanbases around and got both their comeback album and singles in the top 20 without any real advertising. I also doubt that the cribs "called up the NME," because the NME blood bum them to hell and anything slightly interesting to do with the cribs will be printed or on nme.com within minutes. the jarmans are the true voice of modern indie rock and if you haven't seen it by now then fuck off.
I love how,
a) They said that in an interview for the NME
b) They had a song called 'Hey Scenesters!'
I smell hypocrisy.
And yes, I know Hey Scenesters was meant to be satirising the scene, but they just fuelled it.
.
Ha ha your band is fuckin one of them you cunt. Surely they cant expect not to ge crtiscised for their own musical errors by diverting it over towards other bands who sound similar. This really annoys me
^^ HAHAHAHA
"The jarmans are the true voice of modern indie rock"
Either you are being incredibly sarcastic, or you are being unintentionally funny
Congrats in either case for making me laugh out loud
