The restoration of Salford Lads' Club, the venue made iconic by The Smiths, has been dealt a cruel blow after thieves stole its new roof.
The Grade II listed building, currently undergoing a £1m rebuilding, was the backdrop for The Queen is Dead, the classic 1987 album from Morrisey, Marr et. al.
Now the club is exposed to the summer rain. Yeah, nice one, thieves! Volunteers and workmen have spent the week bailing out the boxing ring, but there is thought to be a great deal of structural damage.
"We are devastated by this criminal act," said a spokesmen for the restoration group.
"The thieves have basically stolen from Ordsall kids' futures".
Guilt trip. Guilt trip. Guilt trip.
"When the roofers arrived on site on Tuesday they thought they could hear a tap running inside, but it was actually rain water pouring through the roof."

1) The Smiths are an example of a rare moment of collective brilliance in music when a band with an iconic sound and great songs become the voice of a generation and then go on to to influence countless artists.
2) You are a pointless little twat who can't spell.

1) No one band should ever speak for a generation. The Arctic monkeys apparently speak for mine. Their sound is apparently 'iconic' as well. Case closed.

The Smiths are fucking incredible. Seriously. Find me a better example of 'indie' mixing with pop and i'll be very surprised. Even though I fucking hate indie-pop the Smiths stand out in their genius.
They were superb songwriters, had an amazing group chemistry and were often lyrically mindblowing. They have one of the greatest pop single records of any pop artist ever, and have created immensely good albums (The Queen is Dead being the outright best in my opinion). They were also damn funky
I mean, what more do you want? The moon on a stick? You might not see any appeal in Moz or the jangle, but anyone who approaches music with an open mind has to see their objective qualities

salford, a home town to be proud of
oh i love my salfordian roots and the antics of my fellow salfordians, someone has obviously lifted some lead off the roof (granted not the holy name church, but still). but yes, the kids of ordsall have been hard done by.
the smiths were great, they have influenced countless musical artists in a positive way, and it wasn't just pointless moaning. i think they were a beacon in the face of thatcherism and all its hideousness and did represent a lot of people of the time who were fed up with the political climate (for example, shoplifters of the world unite - "my only weakness is a listed crime").

I maintain that their best equivalent
in terms of other art forms, is Oscar Wilde. This is in the sense that the bits that are memorable, the 'quotes' as it were, are the bits they get praised for. This ignores the large amount of guff. Morrisseys voice is all preening and posing and crooning, but devoid of real emotion. Marrs guitar sound is acceptable but far from worthy of praise- a couple of slides, a couple of jangly chords, but nothing worth going crazy for.

I was in Salford on thursday, and I'm a big Smiths fan, but it wasn't me.
Just One Thing...
I can't help but write when I see one of the most important groups of all time coming under fire; suffice to say, you will NEVER see the like again, there will never be a coming together like Marr/Moz and the fact the other two fit in like a second skin defies belief. Pop music died in 1987, it's all different now, but where are the great bands today, REM? The Cure? Arctic Flunkeys? I just hope they never reform and spoil their genius...
