The Greatest: Cat Powers to Shortlist Prize victory

Cat Power has been rewarded for recording The Greatest with this year's Shortlist Music Prize.
The award, whose stature kinda mirrors that of our Mercury, was awarded to the singer by a panel that included Franz Ferdinand, Panic! at the Disco, Sufjan Stevens, Snow Patrol, The Killers and Flaming Lips.
That panel - hit and miss? Remaining 'listmaker' KT Tunstall probably tips it off target, but witnesses say she was as oblivious as she uttered thus:
"Cat Power's album quickly got under my skin. She has one of the most beguiling voices around. 'The Greatest' is an immediate classic that will never age."
We'll see. The singer, real name Chan Marshall, is the first woman to win the prize in its six year history. Six years? Not too long - may as well list the previous winners, working forwards from '01: Sigur Ros, N*E*R*D, Damien Rice, TV on the Radio and Sufjan Stevens.
DiS isn't sure if Marshall will be presented with a big bag of cash/giant cheque - but the money will be spinning anyway, since the victorious record will be given primacy on the iTunes Store this week. The reason for that ad? The Greatest now includes a new, digitally exclusive cut - "Up and Gone". So if you're interested in that, it looks like it just got greater.
DiScuss: Cat Power won over Band of Horses, Beirut, Bonnie Prince Billy, Girl Talk, Hot Chip, Joanna Newsom, Regina Spektor, Spank Rock and Tom Waits. Worth it?

Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes loves...
Over Beirut and Joanna Newsom?
That's a disgrace. The Greatest isn't even a very good album!
^ this ^
When compared to the opposition, this wouldn't have topped my list.
(Still prefer it to Ys, though.)
bf
its a peculiar choice...very samey and average record.
I wonder if they picked it cos it has that air of 'chaotic' artist pulling together outstanding classic album, despite the clean production and good musicianship just highlighting the lack of interesting songwriting
Cat Powers to Shortlist Prize victory...
probably the worst pun i've ever heard.
I haven't heard Girl Talk or Spank Rock
but I know all the others are much better
:|
you can't be serious.
they were
two of my absolute favourite albums of last year.
I like The Greatest but can honestly say that I prefer every single other album on that list.
I like The Greatest
but it's no Joanna Newsom or Beirut. Also, You are Free is better anyway.
Still the Shortlist Prize has honoured Sigur Ros, TV on the Radio and Sufjan Stevens in the past so it's excused a relative mis-step this time round.
I second
the Beirut and Joanna Newsom preferences.
Still, at least the Shortlist is better than the Mercury Music Prize...
Beirut
If they piped AIDS into my ears I'd prefer it to Beirut.
tsk
even her best albums (moon pix, you are free) wouldn't have trumped Beirut or Tom Waits' latest.
it is quite clearly
music for girls. so i am ignoring everything above - i am whistling now........
Spank it
Spank Rock's album is brilliant.
that beirut album
is one of the most okay albums in a long time. seriously, it exudes 6/10 like nothing else! i mean, it's all very well for ideas and ambition, but it's just fairly good central/eastern european folk music. if you think it's remarkable...then listen to other music in a similar style! there's loads, and a fair bit is better!
