Oxford Zodiac to close for four-month refurb
The AMG-acquired Oxford Zodiac is to close for refurbishment for four months over the summer.
Purchased last year by the Academy Music Group – owners of the Carling-stocked Academy venues up and down the country, amongst others – the Zodiac will close mid-May, to re-open in September having had £2m spent on it.
The main room, downstairs, will become the Carling Academy Oxford and sport a capacity of 900. Two other venues will be created, the Zodiac (upstairs, cap. 436, approximately) and the Bar Academy, holding around 280, both of which will operate as either stand-alone venues or as additional rooms for club nights. Moody’s, the Zodiac-endorsed pool lounge, has been sadly sacrificed. You can inspect all the details here.
To mark the passing of the Zodiac as we know it, the venue’s most frequent external promoters TCT Music and The Zodiac themselves join forces for a night of live music of bands both old and new, spread across both of the Zodiac’s floors:

AMG, meanwhile, recently announced the acquisition of the Brighton Hippodrome, taking their total venue tally to 12. The Hippodrome was a popular venue until 1967, until it closed down and spent the next 40 years as a Mecca Bingo.

dustball?
wtf?
yep
bands old and new.
bang goes another good venue
i did think they were taking their time changing the name
wonder if it will have shit sound and layout like most other academys though
I'm sure the rant that dudey boy from 65DOS
was slightly scathing of the of this reworking.
where is this bar academy going to be? and can anyone see the rumours of Radiohead playing the reopening being at all substantiated?
i think the Bar Academy
might incorporate part of the retail unit AMG purchased next door.
i hope they rescue the pyramids in portsmouth
in some way
hmm
wonder what mr yorke thinks of this. shure he owns/owned some shares or something like that in it
*shrug*
On the plus side...
...maybe TCT will put on all the bands in Reading instead! Woo!
used to
from what i'm aware...
Despite the fact that I really don't give a stuff about those bands
I'm totally going to this.
yeah
they've switched some gigs from mid-May to September over to the Fez.. hopefully if they prove too hard to work with over at the Carling Ac, Reading will benefit!
i think it should work out alright for the Zodiac though, the Bar Academy will give smaller bands more of a chance than before i guess, despite the corporate mentality. we shall see. new beginnings and all that.
oh, the zodiac
:( carling academy oxford....many a good gig in this place, but i'm not in oxford anymore so i guess i'm not so bothered. plus maybe they'll finally change the frontage.
i am
sad.
lets get incredibly drunk.
much as i dislike this on principle,
hearing that there will still be a small, downstairs sized venue has made me less negative about the whole thing. it seems now it'll have the facilities for all the bands that they currently put on, plus others that they havent been able to. which is a good thing.
so yeah. im reserving judgement for now.
Evil corporate gits
they be but I hope AMG do something good with the hippodrome, it's been a rooting hulk for as long as I can remember so I'm glad someones taking a chance on it. After all you can't have enough venues.
and then onto ATP!
i was hoping it might be that thursday.
I think this is probably a good thing
The place, to be fair, could do with a lick of paint. And an additional venue in central oxford is great news, especially with the closure of places like The Point.
Mind you, I'd be surprised if they manage to fill it every night, what with Brookes SU only a mile up the road.
presumably
that'll just be dive dive then? or do they plan to bring back the old drummer?
