Portishead play low-key show; debut new material

Portishead played a small show, ish, in Bristol last night, and previewed some new material in the process.

The trio of old - Adrian Utley, Beth Gibbons and Geoff Barrow - played two songs at the city's Mr Wolfs bar last night, reports Pitchfork. Or, rather, a reader of Pitchfork.

Says said reader: "After a couple of hours [spinning] eclectic sadcore classics from the likes of Tom Waits and Joy Division, Geoff and Adrian began to play 'Wandering Star', with Geoff playing bass. A few bars in, Geoff picked up the mike and asked, 'Anyone here know how to sing?' At this point Beth walked on stage and started singing."

The trio then played a new song, during which, apparently, the crowd "had their mouths gaping and eyes wide open as if they were witnessing an alien landing". Barrow wrote on his MySpace page that the new song is, as yet, untitled.

The trio had not played together since 2005. According to witnesses, Gibbons had to pay to enter the venue as the person working the door failed to recognise who she was.

I would have been suspicious

when i went into the bar and the DJ WASN'T playing portishead, it being Bristol and all.

I've not heard

any Portishead or Massive Attack in a public place for a long time.

enough

of that idlewild thingy now please. bit annoying innit. Thankyou.

That Idlewild advert

is about to get me banned from reading DiS at work. Serious. Please make it stop.

Really?

I knew theyd stop as soon as i stopped going there....grrrr.

What is the new Idlewild Singel>

Where can I get it?

When is it released?

It is

strange that Manchester make huge deals about Manc bands, yet we seem to avoid being absurdly proud of bands who happened to live in the city. Maybe trip hop is not as 'powerful' as rock?

Funnily enough

... I was thinking the same thing recently. Until I went into the Fine Line on the Whiteladies Road and they had Protection on.

But no more. Said pub is now shut.

However, how arsed off am I? I decided not to go into Bristol to see Geoff Barrow on account of a heavy night previously. And stayed in reading the sunday paper instead.

Feck.

Yes, Trip hop is alive and well

Trip hop is alive and well.
