Lily Allen: angry at "f*cking patronising" magazine
- Artists:
- Lily Allen »
Lily Allen has opened her regularly free-flowing gob - proverbially - on her MySpace page to have a pop at NME and the magazine's editor, the award-winning Conor McNicholas.
Allen is angry with the magazine's decision to drop its proposed cover of Allen plus a selection of other female artists - those featured around the top of the magazine's 'Cool List' (click here; Allen was third) - and also with its editor's rather dangerously sexist remark that "you can still rock a crowd when you're wearing stilettos".
This week's issue features Muse on the cover, rather than the likes of Allen and 'Cool List' number one Beth Ditto, frontgal with excellent Olympians The Gossip. Allen had fallen out with NME previously, regarding drug-related comments (read the reveal-all interview on Pitchfork), but agreed to contribute to the 'Cool List' article because "the context was so important, i.e. a strong female presence in music".
She comments on her latest blog:
"Now I don't care for the 'Cool List', and I said this to them in the interview, which is probably why they didn't print it. I don't really think the NME are in any position to tell us who is cool and who isn't; personally I don't think a bunch of people sitting in an office drinking tea, inventing musical genres, and watching Nathan Barley DVDs are leading any kind of cool brigade, do you? But I did find it interesting that they wanted to put five women on the cover, and wanted to name 2006 our year."
Which, of course, they didn't. And then there was Conor's comment, a little unwise in hindsight. Says Allen:
"I mean how fucking patronising. Is that all we are, stilleto-wearing people? Is that all he could say, that we brought a 'new energy' to the music scene? Don't make me sick. We've always been here, you arrogant prick. This was your chance to actually show you meant it. And instead you put Muse on the cover, 'cause you thought that your readers might not buy a magazine with an overweight lesbian and a not-particularly-attractive-looking me on the front. Wankers.
"You should take your heads out of your New Rave arses, and actually think about your responsibilities to youth culture, and to women in general."
And to that, we need add nothing.

i mean
i already liked Lily Allen, but those are pertinent and well placed comments.
she's fucking ace.
hear hear
lily allen is beyond awesome.
I dislike her
but she's making some vaild points here.
What the fuck is new rave?
Sometimes I wanna hate her
But I totally respect her comments this time.
Everything this girl writes or says
makes me like her more. I know a lot of people hate her and her opinions but the Pitchfork interview especially showed her to be surprisingly intelligent and she usually (unlike say the Gallaghers) backs up her criticisms pretty well).
And she's responsible for my favourite quote of the year (from a Time Out London interview about um...London):
"You go to places like Los Angeles for instance, and you just go “Where’s all the old shit?”’"
That made me laugh.
...
NME have a patronising "Girlz can Rok 2!" cover every year without fail. And all the artists always suck. I mean, I suppose it could have been an awesome pickle - who to have on the cover: A band comprised of talented musicians playing inimitable music? Or some girls whose dress sense far ecclipses their ability to sing to an average level and hire proficient session musicians to play music they didn't write.
I might consider buying a magazine with an overweight lesbian and Lily Allen on the cover if they were making music that wasn't such utter crap.
fair play...
to you Lily. I was never really a fan before but I have a whole new respect for you.
You don't like The Gossip?
Live, they're totally one of the best bands, like, eva.
The Gossip aren't as good as Muse?
give me a break.
she is a mouthy bint
but for once she has some points.
amazing
I take back everything I said
That Cool List was good after all. It should have been only a Top 1, not a Top 50. And at number 1 should have been Lily Allen.
Update the above article with a link to the Pitchfork interview, Mike...
I actually
bought the issue and was surprised that Muse were on the cover to be honest. I'm sure previous years have had the 'cool list' winners on the covers, so why not this?
I like these Lily Allen comments a lot, yes I do.
...
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Tranny + Fat Tranny = The Gossip.
Again.
I hate Lily Allen
I really do. But I like these comments
My god. I've gone from hating her to loving her...
how fickle am I? Maybe I should buy the nme...
She irritates me
But I have some kind of new-found respect for her after reading this..
When it was Pete Doherty
they had a cardboard hologram of him on the front cover (sponsored by some phone company or other if I remember rightly)
Hear Hear
Nice one Lily! Too fucking right.
If i find out youve taken insurance with Shiela's Wheels or watch Loose Women though you've crossed the line! ;p
The Yeah Teah Yeahs
are awful, Karen-o can't sing and if she's going for the whole fashion rock thing she should really get a decent haircut (but talet is preferable)
There is NOTHING
wrong with Loose Women. Take that back!
...
Not that I'm Muse's biggest fan or anything, but The Gossip aren't just much, much worse than Muse - they're just a fad band. In a year people will be saying of the Gossip "Yeah Yeah Yeahs started to suck when they replaced Karen O with that fat bird...".
If they say anything at all.
And the band itself will be long gone, because their simplistic, formulaic music doesn't contain enough innovation or imagination to sustain more than one album.
I mean, really - how much mileage can you get out of a basic one-note riffs and beats that feature the disco hi-hats that have been on every indie record since 2002.
yes there is
VD
Whats new rave?!?!?
Is it nme's way of saying house music??
False advertising, if you ask me
But then I was dubious when I saw its position within the daytime schedule
Imagine my disappointment when I first tuned in to Kirsty's Home Videos...
I always said
she was great.
it's a quandrary
good things about lily allen:
her blog.
her general honesty and sanity.
she gives good interviews.
bad things about lily allen:
her music.
Can't she just go be a good kids tv presenter or somesuch instead...?!
d'you think...
...she hate me if i pointed out to her that she's actually fairly attractive. Was her being unattractive important to her argument? I hope not. Mmm. Allen.
woah
McNicholas just got his River Island dressed arse served to him! AT LAST! I don't really like Lily's music much (although Smile was harmless enough weren't it?) but I love her "don't give a flying fuck" attitude. I hope this gets about.
I've never liked her
but after reading these comments I may be forced to change my mind.
i've always accused her of being a pouting airhead
today, i am wrong.
I felt the same way about wife swap
I undid my trousers for nothing
Further to my above comments
Lily Allen now gets a 10/10 rating on my profile. Even in spite of that "I believe that it's called al fresco" line.
She may have a point for once
but I still wish she would keep her big gob shut.
I'd much rather look at Muse than her any day of the week.
jees
I was not a fan of this girl.
but I'm totally converted now. ON THE NAIL OR WHAT? Hopefully if she manages to keep her gob shut then she might actually come out of this smelling of roses..
i adore
lily, always have and always probably will. all her comments are normally well aimed, and need to be said.
I'd much rather look at Muse than her any day of the week
You're quite obviously not a man
Give me a million pound please, mike..
;o)
Well I must say for a person who doesn't like Lilly Allen (thats me by the way) these comments have made me think of her in a whole new (much better light). Fair play.
I could have done that...
...I meant put it in the actual article so as many people as possible see it!
I watch nathan barely dvds
while drinking tea but at home, what freaks do it at work!
Can't stand Lily Allen
But she is BANG ON here!.
Right fact fans
They've been around for 5 years
They've made 4 albums
Their sound has eveolved from being very bluesy punk 5 years ago to what it is now.
Even if you have just heard the last record their are songs that are more then 1 note riffs and disco high hats.
Sometimes I wish NME would stop writing about bands I like as it always leads to aimless drivel from too cool for school kids. It doesn't happen often but when it does this is always the result.
Plus Lily Allen is bang on.
co-signed
...
and me
nice one crosbys.
and i'm well impressed with lily allen lately. it's exactly the sort of eloquent, well-chosen rant they'd cream over if (a) johnny borrell had said it and (b) it wasn't about them.
i'm a heteroman, and...
1. matt bellamy
2. lily allen
3. musebass (chris?)
4. musedrums
APPLAUSE
I never really liked her till now!
what's wrong with nathan barley?
i think she's trying to say they're 'idiots'
otherwise i agree with what she says :D
she's completely right
i applaud this. *applauds*
maybe Conor subsituted the girls with Muse
because he identified that the NME cool list means absolutely funk all.
I suddenly have respect for Lily Allen.
Her music still sucks the big one though.
The first and probably only time
i'll agree with lily allen. Well done.
The gossip are still shit though.
!
I didn't realise she'd slagged off Muse in that article, maybe my internet browser censored that bit...
You go girl...or someother agreeatory comment like that.
...
Been around 5 years huh? Four albums right?
And yet the magazine interviews, MTV videos and Tv appearances all start coming right at the moment they start sounding like an indentikit 'art' band.
I repeat: They'll be back to obscurity in a year.
...
If you take away the singer, they are the YYYs. Same configuration, same fx, same composition, same technique. And same rubbishness.
im not sticking up for McNicolas here BUT..
..if "you can still rock a crowd when yr wearing stilletto's" is a "dangerously sexist remark" in todays society im never talking to another person.
!!!
It's incredibly patronising. This is 2006, dude.
I'm not entirely sure...
but I like to think the comment about Nathan Barley is quite an incisive comment about how the people who love that average show are the people that it resembles the most.
It's a bizarro oh-my-god-it's-so-true-my-
friends-act-like-that-and-so-do-I-but-
because-I-recognise-it-then-it-makes-
me-even-cooler...
Anyone who had the unfortunate chance to read Trash Club's forum whilst it was screening would know what I'm talking about..
you said it better before
'the gossip are the yeah yeah yeahs with a fat bird instead of a tranny'
i can't stand her
but points for the rant, aye.
The Gossip
Umm, not that I would expect anyone to realise it from reading the NME, but the Gossip have been around for a while now. I think their newest record's their best actually, but it's hardly a big stretch from their previous work. It's got more of a groove, but it's still minimal bluesy garage led by beefy riffs and a howlin' singer.
They are hardly, as you say, a "fad band." And what is that fad, might I ask?
I live in Canada and to anyone with an ear to the underground, they haven't been "obscure" since well, before they signed to Kill Rock Stars. Then again, they're hardly a hyped up phenomena over here. We don't quite work on the same level that the UK press does...
???
This is all very average isn't it. NME - uninspiring. Lily Allen - uninspiring. Nathan Barley - uninspiring. I am so uninspired I can't think of a more creative way of saying it.
I'm surprised that anyone cares what an NME editor and Lily Allen actually think. Who knows what was behind their decision not to run a cover with 5 women on it but maybe there is another side to the story? Regardless of that, the stilettos comment was just typical hyperbole and shouldn't be taken as a totemic pronouncement on the position of women in the world today.
Can we have some proportion please? I guess that is a bit boring though.
By the way
I'm also a little disappointed that most people are fickle enough to like someone just because they slag off NME on a myspace blog. It doesn't take a genius.
I can hardly say I'm a fan of her music...
But in interviews and stuff, she seems so spot-on.
so with you
minus the lily allen. and dom before chris. otherwise...mmmmm.
.
pretty ironic that you comment on an article about sexist indieboy wankers and call women you don't deem attractive to be trannies.
so
"i'd much rather look at muse any day of the week"
did you read her comments?
the reason the nme is such a fucking abomination is because of people like yourself
well
I don't give a shit about her slagging off the nme but I think it's pretty amazing that she's willing to be articulate about the silencing of female creativity and to out the hypocritical, misogynistic twats.
...
That's not ironic.
...
If I'd said it that way again, I'd be repeating myself and I'd now be replying to a post saying "You said that before!"
what
the gossip are hardly a fad band. they have been around since 1999 and pre-date the yeah yeah yeahs. i think you have your critique arse about tit.
Once again
Despite making music I deeply dislike, Lily Allen is *right* on the money in an interview. Could she just make spoken word albums?
Stealthy, Jamie_Summers
I think the two of you should get it on! You could yank each other off while discussing how much fat girls and girls who look a bit like boys disgust you.
awwwwwww.....
daddy's ickle girl angry, is she? She'll thcweam and thcweam until she's sick!!!!
the nme's a comic anyway. Fucking "cool list"!!! Lilly Allen and that fucking thing out of the Horrors? the nme and Lily Allen are both jokes, not sure which ones worse. i suppose she is - probably fucked her way to the top. lord knows she hasnt got there on talent.
im with stealthy
both bands are shit as ... art rock is so fucking style over content ... i just wish they would write some tunes
lilly allen was write about NME she is better off out of it
I would rather hear about Metric then the gossip... heard the album and its crap
metric pisses on it plus the lead singer is not going to die of a heart attack by the time she is 40
Wow, what wisdom ^^
I have a love/hate relationship with Lilly Allen, but she's just made some amazing points here.
i dont like her music
but ive got to agree with her there.
although she shouldnt let the NME get to her to be honest...theyve always been offensive.
ive said it before and ill say it again 'gender is not a genre'
although some people still insist that it is.
Omg,
I was reading this thread and then LDN came on my mp3 player.
HOW CAN ANYONE HATE HER? She's amazing.
all magazines
have a 'girl issue' at some point.
its downright offensive.
could you imagine if they started doing 'boys that rock!' issues of magazines?
it just would never happen
of course
shes female. she MUST have slept with a man to get where she is
*rolls eyes*
...
Oh my God! A band have performed and released material for a length of time before attaining mainstream popularity.
Thank you for your flash of the bleeding obvious and refer to my other posts.
Innit
This thread is like some kind of retard magnet.
I think this proves
that Lily Allen really is one of the coolest girl's ever
i feel i ought to reiterate everyone else,
as although i don't like her music in the slightest she at least has a decent brain in her head. i can't do anything but respect her for those comments.
youre
all so fickle. if she didnt care about it, then why would she spend time writing a blog about it, or just keep her opinions discreet. Yet again, people play into her hands. Ridiculous
tit
i repeat, TIT
...
what?
Where does anyone say she doesn't care about it?
Err
She comments on her latest blog:
"Now I don't care for the 'Cool List'.
which is the template for most of her blog entries.
i think you misunderstood
she doesn't care about the list. The rant itself is about NME as a magazine and their editor's patronising stance towards women in rock.
No Point in Worrying...
The NME will be discontinued by 2008, as will Lily Allen, they can go and be extinct together.
Not a fan
I don't like what I've heard of her music and until now thought she was another manufactured pop idiot, but I'm full of respect for her after reading this and the Pitchfork interview.
Lily Allen has a greater independent mindset than 95% of bands covered on this site. Good on her.
what's preferable?
Spelling comes to mind...
