The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
- Artists:
- The Darkness »
That fare dodging will have a knock-on effect on the price of standard tickets, you know...
The Darkness will release their long-awaited (we suppose) new album on November 14th. It's titled One Way Ticket To Hell... And Back.
A single, 'One Way Ticket', is due for release between now and then.
The band apparently wrote some 40 songs for the new record, a total that's been whittled down to just 14 or 15. So, why bother in the first place?
- Drowned in Friday: Party? Drink? I'm in Love? TFI?
- Freshly Inked: The Temper Trap
- Europe to be plunged into Darkness?
- Ilosaarirock 2007 shapes up
- Justin Hawkins lined up for Celebrity Big Brother
- Justin Hawkins will start work on a solo record
- Further Darkness doom and gloom: band gets dropped
- The Darkness' Justin Hawkins quits

Just about all bands do that. Why be nasty?

Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
why are they putting it in their press release as if we should be in awe of their creative output?
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
I hate they "we wrote yeah like 40 songs" shit when you just KNOW these cunts are going to have live tracks, cover versions and remixes as b-sides.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Surely it represents a failing in quality control, if such an accusation can ever be levelled at a band like The Darkness.
By saying 'We've done 40-odd songs' we're meant to think 'oooh, you talented shits, you'. When actually said 'songs' are sidelined because they're utter gash and thus undeserving of our admiration.
I'm all for bands writing hard at home/their own studio, getting 15 songs togther that are solid-stone quality and then recording them... that the Darkness managed 40 worries me... what is the point? If it's gash, ditch it! If you're only gonna put 15 out, concentrate your energies on the good songs and forget the shitty filler... really, keeping the offcuts for b-sides is just lazy. I'd rather a Mousse T and DJ Sammy mega remix than a shoddy hackneyed piece of pop-metal SHIT as a b-side.

Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
How do you know if a song is going to be good or not before you write it?
But yes, telling us they wrote 40 is a bit unnecessary.

Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
You don't have to write all of it to know if it's heading shitwards.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Wow, this is the first tour that nobody who reads DiS is going to.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Because you're in a successful band aren't you.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Would people pay £10 for a 1-track album?

What is the big deal with writing 40 songs??
Can someone show where the arrogance from the Darkness are coming from at this point?
The Darkness are shite, anyways.

Ah, all you shitters bad mouthing The Darkness are the same morons who jumped around to 'Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman' before they "sold out" (by people buying their records) so suddenly it wasn't cool to like them anymore. Also cue, a minor Kaiser Chiefs obsession in early 2005, and god forbid if Bloc Party get too successful.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Yeah I know, big deal. I hate the Darkness, but I think it's good that they haven't just been sat around doing fuck all since their last album. I wouldn't be offended if they said they wrote 100 songs. Better than bands who released an album ages ago and keep saying 'we've written like 8 songs and we're struggling for an albums worth'. The when they release the album it's shit anyway.
You know, maybe they like what they do and don't just write and record to sell. If they did that then they probably would just stick with 15 and work on them.

Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
That criticism might be slightly unfair. Think, for example, about people who intitally like some songs by a band but on further exposure to them - seeing them live, repeated listens to the music and even a dislike of new material - they change their mind. Are you not allowed to do so without the same tired phrase 'backlash' being shouted by current fans of the band.
I think the mistake made in this new article is that because you dislike the band it's fair game to criticise absolutely everything they do - leading to comments such as moker's.

The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
I won't be upset if it turns out I like their new record though.. I can handle that I reckon
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
I demand a 4 CD gatefold set is released, to allow all 40 of these undoubted works of genius to reach the ears of the deserving public.
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
a load of bands say exactly what the Darkness have said before releasing an album; they are, however, still deserving of such criticism because, well, it's the darkness.
a band aimed squarely at 'people who don't really like music'.

Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
i would! ( i might be stupid tho)
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Other bands wrote thousands of songs in the 80's.
Can anyone say "Shit"?
Can anyone say "Shit"?
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
the only way to redeem themselves is if One Way Ticket is a cover of the mighty Ten Benson....
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
i seem to recall weezer doing the same, with more songs. do you call them shit because of it?
i've seen lots of bands talking about doing the exact same thing.
so why single out the darkness?
i dont like the darkness, but if your going to try and say filtering out songs for an album is something unusual and bad....then you're full of shit.
xx

You see... tomddf's comments are exactly what I'm talking about. Just because some people who like the Darkness are "people who don't really like music" (which I do agree with) doesn't mean that's a valid reason to hate a band. Who cares what other people think? Stop buring your 'sell out' Interpol records and remember: It's all about the music man.
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
people's personal opinions of The Darkness aside, i can't for the life of me see what the problem is with a band writing a whole load of songs and then whittling them down to the best ones.
?
if a band you liked said "we wrote 12 songs, said "that'll do for an album. the b-sides can be remixes" because the label wanted it out before Glastonbury and we had better things to do anyway" would you really think the album was likely to be a career high point?

Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Meshuggah, anyone?
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
that's not the point though.
every band does it.
most bands talk about it.
if Justin came out and said "we're putting songtitles on the back of our new album" someone would probably say "what a cock, why would we even want to see your shit song titles anyway?"
they've had their 15 minutes.

You gave them that long!?!
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Oddly enough after all that, there's only going to be 10 tracks on the album.
But you can be a cynical lot sometimes. The Darkness are just entertainment. Given a choice of watching Justin soar above a crowd on a tiger, or some garage no-marks boring me to tears down the Scunthorpe Frog and Turnip, I know what I want to see...

And they're awesome. Best band from England in years.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
I largely agree with you moker. The only problem is when you say 'it's all about the music'. It's not really, is it? We aren't that soul-less. Especially with a band like the Darkness, it's obviously not just (may be it is largely, but still) about the music. Second by focussing just on the music it makes the Darkness equally comparable to any other band. And I'll reiterate my earlier point in a different way now: reviewers often use their favourite bands as a standard for judging all other bands. All music is not equally comparable.
I do understand some people have blind hatred for the Darkness. Just fucking realise it is a bit subjective and irrational. And don't use your blind hatred of a band to impose your views on others. If you can't talk coherently or a bit seriously about the band then don't bother. How the fuck do you know you won't like new Darkness material? I'd say that's more of a mark of someone who doesn't like music.
Blind belief in a band and blind hatred should be avoided. As you are just playing along with the games that magazines like NME happily create and that the music industry likes.

i never liked the darkness when they first arrived on the scene. all my mates did. I just didn't get it. Then they started to get played all the time. It grated on me most. Then they all turned against the darkness, and it was like "i told you so". Still, i'm not bothered by them that much. There are far better British bands out there anyway.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
How awesome would a garage no-marks in a tiger be! Much better! I'd pay for that down the old Frog!
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
I can safely say the track listing makes intersting reading, some songs already mooted are called:
One Way Ticket
Knockers
Is It Just Me
Dinner Lady Arms
Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time
Hazel Eyes
Bald Girlfriend
English Country Garden
Blind Man

Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Also, although this is a somewhat indie-schmindie argument, repetition leads to boredom. Repetition leads to boredom. Repetition leads to boredom. Ah, stolen ones are the best. Anyway, the point is, due to me being so fantastic and searching out new bands before most slothlike idiots, I had listened to the singles enough for me not to want to particularly hear them again for a while. Then every rock establishment in the entire world decided to play their records all the time and they were in all the papers and on TV and I became bloody sick of them.
Re: The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
Exactly the same for me.
I said to them "you'll be fed up of these pointless 'hahaha, how camp was 80's rock' wankers in 6 months time" and they are.
If only they'd listened to me.

I think that's leik, a joke in the title :|
The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
I've heard English country garden. It's alright.
I loved the first album, and I saw them live and they were ace. He mounted a giant tiger which was hoisted about the crowd.
I love the Darkness, they're fun.
Everyone who hates them seems to like the chronically dull Keane and Athlete and other such piles of cock.

The Darkness return on a one-way ticket
The darkness rock , and i despise anyone who simply doesnt like them . FFS , drop the 40 song thing , its really old . If only you guys knew what reall music was . The single One way ticket is totally awsome , and i cant wait for the album to come out . Get a life you lot . How are the darkness a joke when they won 3 brit awards , 4 songs in the top 10 , there debut album got to number 1 for weeks , toured the UK and sold out 3 wembly arenas . Not many bands can say they have done that . Is it not ok to have fun while making awsome music ? Take your head out of your ass and listen to REAL rock music , no shit like "metalica" .
