The Mirror has reported that Oakdale Comprehensive School in Blackwood, the meeting place of the Manic Street Preachers, will close due to falling pupil numbers.
The band, obviously displeased with the news, is to fight to save their formative home. Bassist Nicky Wire is to work with his poet brother Patrick Jones in an attempt to stop the closure.
"We're very sad that this school is earmarked for closure," said Wire.

Manics' school treatened with closure
Boohoo.
According to NME news today the Manics are the 10th most successful band ever in Britain.
Why?

Manics' school treatened with closure
I think it's on the number of chart entries.
Still, it's inexcusable.

Re: Manics' school treatened with closure
It's a deeply flawed argument though. All it means it's they've been successful enough to be able to keep releasing singles; it gives no consideration to how well the singles actually did.
The thing was won by Status Quo and they frankly are not as succesful as a lot of other bands (just released more singles) so I'd take the whole thing with a pinch of salt.

boohoo. my old school is closing to apparently. another horrid 70s concrete abortion is reduced to rubble.
Manics' school threatened with closure
Oh great. My grandma lives right by it. I bet they'll put some ugly houses there instead.
Re: Manics' school treatened with closure
Because they remain still really rather good in the face of endless streams of post-indie throwback shite?
Re: Manics' school threatened with closure
I bet they've landed on this because they failed with the protest and tree hugging to stop the Blackwood by-pass being built. Wire's mam chained herself to the council offices, for what it's worth.
Peronally, I think the new suspension bridge spanning the valleyis a thing of beauty.
Spose you've gotta have a cause, innit.

Re: Manics' school threatened with closure
The manics have been always up there somewhere however good and bad some of their stuff is, 37 singles is a huge haul for a band just over ten years old.
They were influenced by Cock Rock and now have influenced many, you don't get many better white singers than James Dean Bradfield and his guitar playing is very influential too.
Lyrically they are the voice of a generation, if you can open a song with "Libraries gave us power" and "For sale Dumb cunt's same dumb questions
Oh virgins
Listen, all virgins are liars honey"
Then if people think bands like Razorlight, are good, oh dear is what I say.

Re: Manics' school treatened with closure
Number one singles is normally a sign of success, plus a good few at number 2 too. I have never understood peoples hatred of the manics. When their gigs are filled with the most passionate fans in the business.
Manics' school threatened with closure
Nicky Wire = legend. Most of the fans are cunts though.
Re: Manics' school threatened with closure
Aren't the Manics Razorlight fans? Didn't they just take them on tour with them? (I may be wrong here - am not just asking questions sarcastically for the sake of fun). I assume they hand pick support at this stage in their career. You'd think they'd pick a more thought provoking band. Or maybe all that ego/swagger stuff the Manics have always revelled in to an extent is more important to them than the intelligence they have seen as a balance to that.
Re: Manics' school threatened with closure
Yeah i know about Razorlight, i was forced to watch them whilst waiting for the manics, and I just don't Borrell, is he a poor mans Jesus? The only reasons i can think of why they picked Razorlight is to prove that new modern bands just can't cut it, i mean musically Razorlight are poor, they tried to have a jam onstage and it ended up being a bit embarrassing to watch. I find the music business puzzling.

An expansion on this point, that I was wary of putting forward earlier - are the manics trying to make themselves look better by choosing a poor support on purpose? They are one of those bands with that habit - just calling everything else shit. It does tend to make you look better. New (not necessarily modern) bands are quite phenomenal if you are paying any attention. They had mogwai supporting them on their TIMTTMY tour - that's where I first heard of mogwai. That was a good support decision - choosing a band with balls and a risky edge (this is true whether you like them or not). Razorlight just seem a safe choice. And they will sell records off the back of a manics support slot. Haven't they had enough press already?

Going back to Manics support bands, I once saw them supported by Mogwai at Chester Northgate Arena. Mogwai got booed on that tour. Not in Chester though, everyone was probably too busy at the bar while my life was being changed.
Re: Manics' school threatened with closure
This being the same Nicky Wire who once called for a bypass to be built over Glastonbury. I know he probably wasn't remotely serious, but still, I'm not even sure he knows what he believes in any more.
Re: Manics' school threatened with closure
So is James, I just found out when checking the above laughable (yet true!) claim.
