Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Death Cab For Cutie's debut fat-label release, Plans (through Atlantic), is shaping up for an early 2006 release (in the UK; the US release is scheduled for the Autumn).

Prior to that, though, Barsuk is to reissue the band's first three proper albums on August 1st - Something About Airplanes (1998), We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes (2000), and The Photo Album (2001). The band's 18-track rarities record You Can Play These Songs With Chords (2002) will also re-emerge. Expect a couple of cheap asking prices, too.

A DVD is also out soon, Drive Well, Sleep Carefully. It follows the band on their 2004 tour of the US, and will pack interviews and various snippets of previously unreleased goodness alongside the standard film gubbins.

Nice.

I love DCfC!

Will be buying all of this, even though I own all the albums :-)

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Just wondering, why would you buy all the albums again if you already own them?
I love Death Cab, but I wont be re-buying all the albums

Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Oe,
I made a blog (itsafever.blogspot.com) and there you can find a short story of Philip Roth that I wrote it out.

The blog is in portuguese, but the story in english, so there'll be no problem for you guys to read, the blog is irrelevant.

Soon I'll put some music, some bright eyes japanese edition, or pavement la's desert session of crooked rain, don't know, I'll see it further.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

God damn - I can't wait until 2006!

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Because it's a re-release, and I'm driven to it by an urge to own *all* the releases. Dunno why, I just am.

'Kittens Got Claws' is a fantastic track from Fickle Public, I take it that's where you got your username?

Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Ok. Someone enlighten me. What the hell do people see in Death Cab? Far as I can tell, the lyrics are excrutiating, the melodies banal, and the songs just irritate me to the extreme. Repeatedly. Gyah!

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

The new stuff does suck quite royally. Transatlanticism is the sound of Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla finally getting their fat paycheck. Fair play to them; after all, they've been at it for years.

We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes, however, is far superior to anything they've produced since. Lyrically, it's much stronger than Transatlancism, Chris Walla's guitar playing has never been better, and it has this wonderfully melancholic mood to it.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Hmm... Maybe I feel differently because I heard Transatlanticism first, but I love that album.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Maybe I was being a bit harsh, but in places it makes me tear my hair out. The "epic" title track is filler - I appreciate they can't keep doing chiming guitars forever, but this attempt at progression just makes me want to grab Gibbard round the throat and go "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, BOY?"

Having said that, there are some classic DCFC songs on there - A Lack Of Color is particularly pretty, Expo '86 is cute in the way it cycles back to the start, and Tiny Vessels is emo++ but a guilty pleasure. As a whole, it's not a patch on something like Scientist Studies, or No Joy In Mudville, or Wait (even though I know that's a Secret Stars cover).

A lot of people got into DCFC via Transatlanticism, and for that I applaud it. I have faith that their next record will improve.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Wow... although I did get into them from Transatlanticism, I love the title track and Expo 86. But I don't see how Tiny Vessels is emo ++. The big chorus is emoish but, if it was, there would be another verse and chorus too, to make it all nice and shiny... anyway...

This is great news for me. I just bought We Have the Fatcs... and the Photo Album, and I'm dying to get hold of the other 2. When the article says they're being released on Barsuk, I know thats their yank label, but will Fierce Panda do it too over here?

By the way, did anyone see them on 'the OC' last week? If you did, you must be an owl or something. They got literally about 4 seconds camera shots, and all the songs were horribly edited and cut down.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Well, I had another listen to one of my housemate's Death Cab CDs , that We Have The Facts one, on random, and the first track was this horrendously cheesy thing called 'Styrofoam Plates'. Meh. You can keep 'em :P

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Ha, fair enough. And yes, yes it is. They are wonderful.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

ha. you're funny.

you just don't know how music and literature industry works here. do you know when death cab are going to be released here, for example? never.
It's just a possibility of free music and literature, don't know, go there and read the simple story or just shush.

sorry DiS. Not trying to do publicity, just trying to promote stuffs.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

What are you talking about? Stryrofoam Plates is on a completely different album, and even then it's at the end.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

But are there going to be any differences...?

Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

ignore him, we've had the death cab argument many times and ultimately he's one of those weird people who loves the Postal service and hates Death cab because "the postal service lyrics are so much better".

Go figure.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record

I was referring the slightly heavy-handed lyrical content.

I'd hope Fierce Panda would do the re-release, otherwise, you used to be able to pick up the older records from Barsuk's website for about $8 each plus shipping, which is pretty cheap. You can pick up the All Time Quarterback one as well, which isn't essential but interesting.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

i dunno, the lyrics aren't as focal on postal service stuff, so maybe when i meant the lyrics are better, i meant they're used better, in that you don't notice their inherent banality, maybe.

whatever, postal service pisses all over death cab from a great height.

anyway, you're just bitter 'cause i slagged you off on the ddf thread :P

Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

really looking forward to the dvd, and new album.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

i disagree, i would say the lyrics are more focal on postal service stuff as the music is quite stripped down.

either way i think his lyrics are genius, no cliches, no cheesy metaphors; Title and Registration is particularly good lyrically.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Meh, I'd disagree (but then I would). When I listen, admittedly rarely, to Death Cab, the music is rather...well, it's just something and nothing, it's kinda unremarkable. But Postal Service makes me listen to the keyboards, and the beats are more interesting...and the music's just more interesting. Even if it is stripped down.

Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in p

'Styrofoam Plates' is from the Photo Album and not on the far superior We Have the Facts... Album. Though I do love Photo as well it just not as good.

Death Cab for Cutie >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the Postal Service

I do like both however.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

I like Styrofoam Plates. I also quite like the lyrics, its quite an interesting song in my opinion.
