So, the charts then;

Hello Oasis in at no.1 for the seventh time with 'Lyla'. Bonjour! to Black Eyed Peas, entering at no.3 with the interestingly titled 'Don't Phunk With My Heart'. Gorillaz refuse to say ta-ta, staying at no.4 with 'Feel Good Inc', whilst Top Ten Band Kaiser Chiefs strut in at, erm, no.10.

Mylo steams in at no.13 with the lovely 'In My Armsi, the big soft get, and hello! to the old skool with Stevie Wonder in at no.19 and New Order plodding in one below with Jet Stream.

Lower down and the laughable Turin Brakes splash down at no.32 as they go Fishing For A Dream. Or maybe a record deal soon? Hot Hot Heat will hope that it's not 'Goodnight Goodnight' at no.36...

Outside the forty, it's oi! to The Eels at no.44 with 'Hey Man (Now You're Really Living)' and one above is the quite great Anthony and the Johnsons making their chart debut with 'Hope There's Someone'. Such a special time... Not much else in the '75 aside from Modey Lemon at no.71 with 'Sleepwalkers'. Hmmm.

Faithless, System Of A Down and Van Morrison enter the top three in the album charts in that order, while further down the lovely Maximo Park say 'word' to the world with their debut 'A Certain Trigger' at no.15. Duke Spirit fails to 'Cuts Across The Land' by sneaking in at no.40, and that's really it...

Si i'm not the only one to think i might be over for the mighty Hot Hot Heat.
Turin Brakes could have another chance but The Duke Spirit are in really bad shape too.

Given the state of the singles chart in this country it would be sad to think someone could get dropped because of a 'bad' placing.

Surely Hot Hot Heat are run by a US label, in any case?

How many copies did Oasis have to sell to get to no.1 then? 80? :-D

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

Shame to see The Duke Spirit only scraping 40... 6music has been right behind it.
Tho' I guess that reaches all of 40 people, and they're all in London so they can't face going out to buy records.

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

Why? The record isn't very good.

They are an average band - that is why no one has bothered buying it- the same for Turin brakes - and anyway in the Duke Spirit's favour if they are such a good band then their lable will give them time to grow, develop, get a bigger fanbase, as after all this is thier first album.

But then I remembered - you HAVE to be the finished products on the first album or it curtains!

my girlfriend convinced me not to buy the cd and vinyl of the eels single because it was a waste of money and i could just download the songs. now i feel all dirty and ashamed because its the first eels single i havent bought and its not a great chart placing. shame on me.

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

I like it.
To an extent.
Moreso than so much of the top 40.

"the duke spirit makes no "cuts across the land" by sneaking in at 40"

go on hire me :p

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

I quite surprised by the fact they'd been booked to play the Astoria before the album even came out. Now I am even more surprised.

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

Goodnight Goodnight didn't do too badly considering that it didn’t get as much airplay as other HHH singles, and that Elevator has already charted (1 place higher than Make up the Breakdown). I think they should release Island of the Honest Man.

Mylo is shit, he's Eric Prydz with one good song.

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

Turin Brakes' first album is still one of my favourites ever, it's sublime, gentle, a properly tasty acoustic album. But, yeah, since then, they've been VERY average :/

Black Eyed Peas are awesome.

I bought the Duke Spirit, I quite like it, though I can see why it didn't inspire a lot of people. I guess being at 40 is ok-ish, they might do better after a second single comes out off it.

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

A second single?! Half the album has already been released!

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

Indeed. I think Loog postponed the album at least twice in the hope one single will finally be a hit !

paint your panic attack.. la la lalalala

Re: Notes from the Overground: UK top 75 Analysed

Duke Spirit are really not my cup of tea. Like the Bravery and all other bands on Loog, come to think of it.
