Beck: never received the right Information before album's release?

Beck's new album, The Information, will apparently miss out on a chart placing this weekend as the Official Charts Company has ruled that its packaging - the album comes with a set of stickers - comprises an unfair advantage.
The stickers are included so that fans can assemble their own album covers; also included is a DVD containing seventeen videos, one for each song. This doesn't offend the OCC, but the stickers do.
A spokesman for the OCC states: "The chart rules do not allow for stickers to be given away as gifts."
Somehow, we doubt Beck's going to be all that bothered about not rubbing chart-position shoulders with The Fratellis et al.

same thing happened
to Ikara Colt's debut album... doubt they cared either.
the news stories should do as much promotion
as the chart listings
yes
clever alcxxk
Like people say
...I doubt he cares, but it's still stupid.
Apparently the DVD, as it had videos of everything on the album, was another 'extra incentive'. Wouldn't that disqualify loads of records? Most 'bonus' DVDs are a bit crap, but the odd good one (Elbow and The Young Knives spring to mind) has been put out as well.
By the way, what's that new 'Digg this story' link about?
it might have been on purpose
sometimes bands prefer not to be chart eligible as it's better to be uneligible than to get a low chart position. Not saying that Beck would have got a low position, but if the label or someone doesn't think it's been promoted enough then using stickers to avoid a potentially disappointing chart position is a well known tactic.
stickers are cool
I like to stick them on my monitor, like my Zwan ones, they are ace! Chart what now? and what about price stickers? mY band give away free razor blades with our cds :D
Stupid stupid rules
but yes, Beck is hardly a chart artist but still sells well. The only downside is loss of impulse buys from people shopping at Tesco et al, who would stock the album if it was in the charts.
Further to MartinSFP's point...
I saw the album in Tesco this week.
Surely the Chart Company will have known, like everyone else, for ages that the album will have stickers with it.
It kind of begs the question why this is only being brought up now...
!
I also saw the album in tesco. Then I went out into the alfresco and talked to a girl from mexico at the texaco.
Yup.
He'll be more gutted..
when he finds out that you can't get his album in Tesco and that HMV are selling the DVD version for £16.99, I wonder why the kids love downloading?
£16.99? Rip off!
I got it for £11.99 on Amazon.
Good point
Tesco probably still sell it if the label have paid for space for a priority release.
I suppose all this just helps Beck look more 'alternative' than he otherwise would do. He was talking about making albums an interactive experience in an interview in Wired last month. Who cares about chart placings when the 'cool crowd' think you're forward thinking and original?
fucking hell mate
you're a fucking legend, a cultural icon for the 21st century if you will. your ability to rhyme words other than "moon" and "spoon" totally rocks my socks to a ridiculous, culturally significant degree. i write for the sunday times's arts supplement and we'd like to do a 1500-word kissass piece on you with lots of glossy photos. you down?
spookyelectric
I might be down next time I'm in town. Just give me a ring and I'll blind ya with the bling.
The label knew what was happening
they set the chart rules after all
yeah, the main point is
that the information is an excellent record... and the packing is genius.
And...
the main point is that it's Beck! It's not Mc GIVE A SHIT whom you've never heard of is it? Whether it charts or not, people are still going to pick up the record, no? Commercial success isn't about whether you see the album's name next to a number is it? Do you like the sound of the single? yes, well go and buy the record. Balls to the chart
