Lil' Kim faces five years in jail after perjury conviction

Lil' Kim has been convicted of perjury following charges that she lied to a grand jury investigation into a shooting back in 2001 (see previous report, here).

The rap star, 30, now faces a possible jail sentance of up to five years.

Lil' Kim, real name Kimberley Jones, told a grand jury that she did not know who had been involved in the aforementioned shooting, which took place outside a New York radio station. However, two associates of Jones contradicted her by admitting that they had opened fire. Thus, the prosecution claimed that she had lied to investigators to protect her friends.

A number of excuses were given but rejected by prosecution lawyers, who proved that Jones was still friends with the shooters at the time of the incident.

The rapper was cleared of obstructing the course of justice, which carries a longer jail sentence, but the jury sided with the prosecution over perjury allegations, leaving the rapper facing five years behind bars.

Never quite understood the point of custodial sentence for perjury. Are liars a danger to the public?

Re: Lil' Kim faces five years in jail after perjur

well yeah, if they stop people from going to jail who should be there..

Re: Lil' Kim faces five years in jail after perjury co

Well, her lying could have kept gunmen away from trouble, if successful.
So that being the case I think a custodial is fair.
It's more about what COULD happen, rather than what WILL.

Re: Lil' Kim faces five years in jail after perjury co

Well, the point is that by lying in such cases you undermine the smooth running of justice and that if you were to get away with it then it would act as an encouragement to others to do the same.
Also, whether a lie is dangerous depends what you are lying about I would have thought.

Re: Lil' Kim faces five years in jail after perjur

I take the points in principle, but am not convinced. I'd say in truth it has more to do with the anachronisitic, vindictive nature of the justice systems we use. There are so many more constructive ways of rehabilitating people. There are far too many people in prison, especially in the US. I can't believe its that much of a deterrent for perjury anyway.

Re: Lil' Kim faces five years in jail after perjur

as Eddie Izzard says, there should be a perjury scale (like murder)....level 10 for little things and level 1 for saying there's no genicide when 10 million people have died.

Always think of these lyrics when I see her name:

2Pac - Hit 'em up

"Little Kim,
Don't **** with real a$$ G's
Quick to snatch your ugly a$$ off the streets
So **** peace"
