Word to the wise...Leave all potential offensive weapons at home before heading out the house...
Mercury Prize winner Dizzee Rascal (a.k.a Dylan Mills) was arrested, along with his 34-year-old driver, on Wednesday morning after their car was stopped by police in east London.
The 20-year-old rap artist was taken into custody for allegedly carrying pepper spray, considered a section five firearm. Rascal's driver had been in possession of pepper spray, an ASP baton (an offensive weapon), and cannabis.
"They were both taken into custody at an east London police station and they were later released on bail to return on April 8," said a police spokesman.
Three other men who had been passengers in the car were searched and released.

Pepper spray? I was gutted when I read that headline because Dizzee is so not the kind of person who would be carrying a gun around, I felt really disappointed. Pepper spray I can deal with, he's gotta look out for himself a bit, hasn't he.

Dizzee has often said that while he's not into that kinda thing, he does feel like he has to protect himself..

I was disappointed at Dizzee Rascal when I first read this headline, but then I read the article and now I'm disappointed at whoever wrote this up.
Why use the term "firearm" in the headline and blow this way out of proportion and help promote a negative stereotype? You are not the bloody NME (actually, even they didn't do that)

on the official police documentation the offence would have gone down as 'Possesion of an illegal firearm'. It is therefore an illegal firearm. I don't think the headline is misleading in the slightest. Surely a headline calling it something else would be more misleading, and deliberately promoting an alternative to the stereotype?

I think the headline is totally misleading. Is there one person here who didn't instantly think 'gun'? No? Then it's misleading. If 'firearm' needs qualification, it shouldn't be in the headline. But, it's no big deal really, it's not the front page of the sun, it's DiS news :)

Nonsense. It's classed as a firearm. ergo, there's every right to call it a firearm. At least the headline goes someway to highlight the oddity of the nature of the arrest. It's sensationalist that he's been arrested for owning pepper spray, and the headline is an almost ironic reflection.

Why didn't the headline just say pepper spray? Whether it is or isn't a firearm I do think most people's first thoughts on seeing firearm would be 'gun'.

in England is it illegal to carry any weapon at all? Like where I live every one owns a gun, every one carries a knife, very few people carry a knife to look tough tho cause then they just look stupid, most people carry them around to cut things, they are a very useful tool. Also most girls carry pepper spray.

A silly spray can? You have obviously never had the pleasure of a dose in the face, or you wouldn't be saying that. Yes, pepper spray can be used for protection, but it is also ideal for incapacitating someone while you kick the shit out of them.
The reason it said firearm is because that is the piece of legislation he is alleged to be in breach of. The Firearms Act covers stun guns, taser guns and mace and pepper sprays as well as the more traditional firearms.

I disagree with everyone here. It's not the headline's fault if the police call pepper spray a firearm.
But for god's sake don't try and defend the police classification: pepper spray is a million miles from a gun of any sort, and it's mad and quite illiterate for the police to deal with the two things on the same footing. A knife would be much more dangerous than a pepper spray device, but from the documentation you would infer that the bloke had done something far worse than carry a knife.

I mean, what the hell is that about? Pepper spray? Is it cool to wield a pepper shaker? Maybe not. I'd still feel threatened if I knew a rapper was known to protect himself with a spice. That would make him sound too unstable. I'd be a little more at ease if I knew he did possess a gun. I expect that from rappers.

I was on a train when some idiot used some "for a laugh". I didn't get it directly in the face, only peripherally, but my eyes were sore, red and weeping for a couple of days.
