John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

The John Peel 2004 Festive 50 was announced last night, with The Fall claiming the top spot for ‘Theme from Sparta FC #2’.

The annual listeners' vote has been running since 1976 and this year's list is the last to bear the influence of the legendary DJ, who died in October.

The top ten is as follows…

1. The Fall – ‘Theme from Sparta FC #2’
2. Bearsuit – ‘Chargr’
3. Caroline Martin – ‘The Singer’
4. Aerogramme – ‘Dreams and Bridges’
5. Sluts of Trust – ‘Leave You Wanting More’
6. The Delgados – ‘Everybody Come Down’
7. Sons & Daughters – ‘Johnny Cash’
8. Half Man Half Biscuit – ‘Joy Division’
9. Graham Coxon – ‘Freakin' Out’
10. Jawbone – ‘Hi De Hi’

The Delgados, PJ Harvey and Bloc Party all have more than one song in the top 50.

good to see aereogramme in there!

That'll be "joy divison" as in "joy division oven gloves" then? Not just an error copied and pasted from the R1 website?

Anyway, i'll stop being pedantic for a second to ask about no. 17: Laura & Ballboy - 'I Lost You But I Found County Music'
I remember them playing the night peel died and thinking how beautiful a song it was. Can anyone give me more info - is it a cover? and is that the single the only place it was released?

Oh and, was it just my sleep deprieved state that had me thinking Mr. Da Bank kept calling the bloc party album "the silent album"?

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

That single is the only place it's released. But there's a version of Gordon singing it on his own on ballboy's second album. A Guide for the Daylight Hours.

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

65daysofstatic in the top 25. how i love the peel show & their listeners...

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

Well done the mighty Fall. Puzzled at the lack of 'Blindness', but there you go.

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

Good list. And good on Bloc Party for being in it three (!) times! Ah...I'll miss Peel!

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

Well done Ballboy for 3 in the top 50.

Very good live band, go if you get the chance.

The show may be carrying on in the new year, if enough people want it to.

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

X-Booty! 'O Superman'! Bloody fantastic!

(anybody else think that the session version of 'Theme From Sparta FC' is much better than '#2'? Just curious...)

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

aren't they planning to replace Da Bank though?
i thought it was a slight detraction from how good the list was that he said what each song was before playing them, thus eliminating a certain element of surprise...

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

I hope so, he gets on my nerves. Though if they replace him with Zane Lowe, I may be forced to shoot myself.

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

Art Brut? Why?

I think the right person would be Lamacq, that's the only way he could stay a regular feature of Radio 1, otherwise he would just move to 6 Music or Radio 2.

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

i wasn't too keen on rob da bank at first, but im enjoyin his shows now... i think he's posibly the man for it.

i can't see lamacq being up for playing some of the more obscure stuff to be honest.

just the thought of zipper zane gettin it makes me want to smash my radio as a precautionary measure....

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

i cant believe the wedding present song only made no. 36, its brilliant.

they seem to have one world on the peel slot this week coming which im quite happy about as they have a tendency to feature great music. i remember peel saying once it was his favourite show other than his own on radio 1.

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

John Kennedy from XFM would be an ideal replacement, won't happen though...

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

I agree that John Kennedy is the man for the job.... but I also feel maybe Radio has had its day and someone could come up with the true answer to our cravings upont the twizzlenet

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

i think One World would be a good replacement, presented by somebody who knows/cares about what's being played.

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

The session version was done in 2003, so that couldnt have been in it this year. Very surprised Blindness wasnt even in the top 50. Don't think i've heard #2 (unless thats the version on the album) but i agree the session version is quality.

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

yeah, something from this year's session perhaps would have been better...how about their version of 'I Can Hear The Grass Grow'?

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

Melys at 38 - top notch
did you know they were actually the most peel sessioned band of recent times?
And they were no 1 a couple of years ago
Melys introduced me to the great man on 2 occasions - both memorable
The first was in Groningen in northern holland and the second was when they were doing a live session in maida vale - John Peel was much more interested in Liverpool winning the UEFA cup than starting his show... he popped out of the TV room at the studio started a recording of old session and came back to watch the rest of extra time
Liverpool won 5 - 4 or something silly and he was like an excitable child throughout his show afterwards...
He was amagic man and his enjoyment of music and life was obvious, I hope I can keep as happy and excited as he was

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

I think daBank's been fine..., but then, I enjoy the Blue Room also (and that's where I first heard Cornershops 'Topknot').

However, I think the idea of the 'Peel' show continuing is not a brilliant one. No-one can replace Jumping Jack and too many will compare the host with him.

We just need a show that airs new music. Have to say Zane Lowe has a broad taste and I certainly get the impression that what he plays makes him rock. And thats fine by me. I don't like evrything he plays but, then, I didn't like everything John Peel played...

What made him unique, for me, was that he would play stuff I would just HAVE to go out and buy... and I do find daBank and Coco also play stuff I have to go out and try to find.

Good to see Brainlove makes an appearance at number 9 in the chart!

Good result for Aereogramme, too. Superb band, especially live.

John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

"i can't see lamacq being up for playing some of the more obscure stuff to be honest. "

I think he could well surprise you, given the chance.
Years ago Lamacq was more a champion of the unknown (both bands and new independent labels). I just don’t think that has been so much his remit in recent years.
Although Peel ended up a big Camera Obscura fan and gave them a huge amount of exposure, it was originally Lamacq that picked up on them and gave the first couple of singles their first Radio1 airing. He also was near enough the only dj to give their more experimental (then) stable mates Mac Meda airplay (a band that were never going to exactly have mass appeal!)

Although I don’t think anyone will have quite the same passion for new music as Peel had…

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

I remember discovering Quickspace, Formula 1, Underworld (born slippy first time round, before Trainspotting rescued it), Arab Strap, Aphex's "boy/girl" was a single of the week, piles more you'd never get from Zane Lowe of NME today...... Lamacq's gotten sullied with the whole DM-wearing, stuck-in-'93, bad-indie-championing image, & I was heartily amused by the anti-"save-the-Evening-Session" petition I'll readily admit. But then we got our comeuppance when Zane Lowe came over from Xfm (oh!! but he plays drum'n'bass!!!! and knows Eminem!!! etfuckingcetera!!!!...at least Lamacq never pretended U2 to be of new-music impoortance for one...). The hour of Lamacq's R1 show before the Breezeblock is still often better (& braver!) than any show of Lowe's... Plus he had Peel's open respect, which Lowe never came close to a sniff of...

Dunno where this is going. Think you could be right, he would surprise us. He covered for Peel when on his hols amply in the past, and more convincingly & comfortable-sounding than Da Bank (bless him) too.
I still say John Kennedy is about the only current dj worthy of being Peel's replacement though (or perhaps even Stewart Lee/Keith Cameron). I've believed that since Xfm's glory days; and even now, despite Capital purging all the joyous Peelish sloppiness out of him by shoving him on playlisted overnights for a year to 'master his trade' (Richard Park's own words, not verbatim but that was the jist of it) when they took over, and his current predeliction for Razorlight (I shuddered when I saw it was his album of the year, surely another Capital Xfm thing, that's definitely not the JK I used to know...).

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

that's "never get from Zane Lowe oR NME". I've half an eye on the darts...

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

far too much time on your hands inbetween masturbating clearly

Re: John Peel Festive 50 - The Fall take top spot

or just cut & pasted off the Radio 1 site perhaps?
Go and wank off over your Interpol albums yourself, you're contributing little here. Zzz.
