Panik over: Scottish electro-poppers split

Scottish purveyors of throbbing electro-pop-rock Data Panik, who only formed in 2005 from the remnants of Bis, have called time on their current musical incarnation.

A note on the band's website, here, written by Manda, explains in detail the hows and whys of the decision, and also mentions individual's future plans.

Here's a wee snippet...

"We have been around for over a year now. It's been so much fun and the songs are some of the best we've ever written we thought. However, in a year, not one single record label showed any interest whatsoever. None! Even promoters were funny about putting us on good bills as they just thought it was Bis again apparently. This is despite numerous people saying they preferred Data Panik to Bis. So, no matter what we did and how good we did it, Data Panik was never going to get to move forward. We released our first 7" ourselves, we funded trips ourselves too which was difficult, and with a five-piece band and having to hire a van, it was just so expensive (we couldn't do it cheap in a transit after getting stopped by the police!). We hated having to ask venues for a large enough guarantee to break even financially. Steven also did all the driving, so maximum effort was made to make every trip happen."

The band's upcoming show at the Mono in Glasgow on August 24 will be their last.

Looks like that 'classic' 1996 TOTP performance

is a bit of an albatross - shame really innit?

That's a shame.

I never got to see them down South, obviously they couldn't afford it that often.

Would have liked to hear them post-Bis.

But I suspect I'm in the minority when I say I fucking loved Bis!

Didn't they release a split on Must Destroy??

I liked Bis better. Real drummers suck.

no!

that's awful. Didn't Must Destroy sign them? That's such a shame.

bis

were in cartoon form on some children's TV show the other day. I hope thew youths were suitably influenced

no...

we didn't.
i would love to have done a DP album -we just did that one split picture disc with them and :( - but the simple truth of the matter is that we just don't have the money to put out everything we'd want to put out.

bah. i only got to see 'em once too. they were ace.

shame shame shame.

Datapanik

were ace - my band did a few dates with them last year, and much as I loved BiS, Datapanik were better (certainly live). Fair enough though - such is the way of DIY that you totally skint and knacker yourself.

Also a shame that there's no London date before they split. This is the first and only time I shall ever wish I lived in Glasgow.

Download Album

I defintely preferred them to bis...

The good news in all of this though is that they are still going to record a download album according to the post on the website.

oh, that is sad

that picture disc is my favourite piece of vinyl.

Sad Day

I'm happy in an odd way as they will all be doing solo stuff so it's not like we will never hear from them agian, they'll be hanging around for a while yet. I never saw either band live and am sad for that fact(i really wish i had been at that wedding gig they did last week).

Positive is they will be releasing a d/l only album so we have some propper tunes to listen to just no more live gigs eh?

RIP Bis
RIP Datapanik

:o(

Oh bloody hell

Sad news

Fav Set List

Does this mean I own the last signed set list for Leeds gig then. it can be seen at i've stuck a picture of the set list up here. http://theairfreshenerman.co.uk/blog/

Where it says 'cover version' that was Kandy Pop played for a couple whoes wedding it was. That gig will stick in my mind as the only time I've ever danced at gig next to a girl in a wedding dress.

i must admit

i actively avoided seeing them on 3 occassions. because they were "that band that used to be bis".

i didnt like the kitchen or whatever they were called either. so i think i was probably fair in avoiding them.

Caught them support

someone at the Garage last year (I think it was Arab Strap)

They were lots of fun and soooooooooooooo much better than Bis.

RIP The Panik

thats a real shame

i was really looking forward to seeing them at some point soon. man.

Powerpuff Girls...

...surely?

I fucking loved...

...Bis. Mini album whose name escapes me but had Dead Wrestlers and various other pop nuggets on was awesome. Downer.

:(

They were fun that one time I saw them.

I really wanted to drag more people along too :(

*Sigh*

Bis and Data Panik were great. I really think that stopping after a year is "quitting." There is no reason why they could not have kept plugging away and waited longer for a deal to come along. There are so many labels that it is virtually impossible for a decent band to not get signed by SOMEONE. I really don't get this.

gutted

x1000000

Bis and Data Panik were both boss :(

wow a whole year without being signed

my heart is hemorrhaging at the injustice.

ahhh bless....

they had to fund their own trips and hire a van. That is so unheard of for an unsigned band.
