Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Public Service Reminder...

What will you be doing this evening at 11:35? Because if you're near a tv, make sure you have it on Two for programme six of series 24, of Later... With Jools Holland, featuring none other than the mighty Bloc Party, Interpol and the Elton John!

DiS sucked a lot of cock and bribed a lot of beautiful receptionists and was there to witness Bloc Party record their debut tv appearance on Monday night. As you will see, they've done themselves proud with a fantastic performance of Western-tinged recent single 'Helicopter' and forthcoming album opener 'Like Eating Glass'. We dunno what was stranger: seeing the band touch so many more people with their brand of angular disco rock, or watching Elton John tapping his feet and applauding, then asking for a copy of their album to be sent over to his dressing room afterwards.

Also, there was a guy called Ray Lamontagne on there with a gigantic husky voice, kinda like Tim Buckley, Neil Young and Van Morrison.

Oh, and Keane are on too, and if you listen carefully you can hear a certain bed-wetter hater (me!), booing.

Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

looking forward to this more than i have looked forward to anything for a while.
i believe interpol are doing "evil" and "slow hands". a marvellous build up for their gig at the forum.

as for bloc party, that is nothing short of amazing.
i saw them at 93 feet east last summer and then the buffalo bar shortly afterwards and now this!!

surely thats the pinnacle of anyones career getting a request from Elton!!!

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

Their pinnacle is yet to come.
Headlining The Other Stage glasto three years from now?
Muse-like stadium tours 4 years from now?
None of this stuff sounds unrealistic. They just keep getting better.

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

You wait until you see Ray Lamontange on the show tonight... oh yes!

Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

I don't think it's very nice to boo acts you don't like, especially if you were lucky enough to get in!

Sounds like a cracker of a programme though. Not a massive fan of Elton John's current musical output, but he's always a funny interviewee and 'Tantrums and Tiaras' is required viewing.

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

Fuck 'em. I'd have thrown a bottle at 'em.

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

You weren't allowed to take bottles in.
And they had metal detectors incase of guns.
I couldn't find any loose bricks, what's a guy to do?

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

Coulda thrown Eltons hair piece....

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

Or get together with a mate and throw Elton.
(note I didn't use the word 'toss')

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

you would have thought jools learnt the first time they were on................

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Bloc Party are sickeningly fantastic live. 'nuff said.
Keane aren't.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

"DiS sucked a lot of cock and bribed a lot of beautiful receptionists and was there to witness Bloc Party record their debut tv appearance on Monday night."

We were? Oh, that's interesting.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

I'm sorry but Bloc Party are crap - their lame 'post-punk' sounds are about as cutting edge as The Futureheads. Their new single sounds like The Cure. How old are you people? Were the Strokes the first band you ever heard? Have you no sense of musical history? Aren't you aware that something is only radical once? That to imitate is to miss the point? The original sounds that came out of that '78-'81 era had not been heard before; it was one of the most fertile periods in British pop music. What we have now is a diluted chart-bound equivalent of phony 'post-punk' endorsed by style mags. Neither This Heat nor The Raincoats or any of their contemporaries had any hopes of mainstream success - which is why they produced such great, original music. Bloc Party are just another bunch of pseudo-'alternative' chancers waiting to sign up for their EMI pension scheme. And as for Keane... British music is terrible at the moment.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Does anyone know that Half Man Half Biscuit song called "Moody Chops"?

...."You're gonna have to join Jools for the jam sesh."

Can't wait to see moody chops Interpol!

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Look out for my stupid gawping face too. I got a bit bedazzled by the bright lights. Bloc Party & Interpol were awesome, Elton John looked like a corpse...

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

I second that emotion. Ray is a fucking legend.

Did you see him at the water rats? It was packed out with industry types, but a good gig nonetheless.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

"I'm sorry but Bloc Party are crap etc etc "

well they refused a major deal.

you must be a right miserable git!!!

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Oh come on - something doesn't have to be original or cutting edge to be great.

I don't think anyone is pretending that bands like the Futureheads or Bloc Party are doing anything that hasn't been done 1000 times before, but many people (myself included) think they write great songs and really enjoy them.

"Bloc Party are just another bunch of pseudo-'alternative' chancers waiting to sign up for their EMI pension scheme."

I think not - if you had spoken to them you would understand that they actually love the music they play and are not in it for the money - that's why they signed to Wichita and not a big label.

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Al, you cheeky monkey I didn't know you were there! Nice. I will indeed keep my eye out for you!

See you at the Forum tomorrow night!

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Heh heh... See if you can spot me, stood just to the left of the drums when Interpol are playing.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

I agree with Nonsense about Bloc Party, every generation may reinterpret the same sounds and styles but they always mix it up with something new. Every musical movement creates its own scene and its own anthems. You could argue that Blur and Oasis in the 90s were re-enacting the Beatles and the Stones duel in the 60s, but it didn't matter. Both were still great (well 94-96 Oasis but you know what I mean)

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

And as for the Futureheads, they are jizzably good!!!
.

.
- False Coversations indeed!!!!

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton Jo

unless they REALLY diversify their sound, stadium tour will not be happening. can easily see them headlining brixton tho.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

i think one thing we can all agree on is that keane are shit

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

i watched this. found it very funny when bloc party (who id only heard a track of before this) did like eating glass, twas fookin storming... to then be followed by the little boy and two apes of keane. and dont they make a 'pretty' sound - to quote jools! spot on mate.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Keane are evil.... I have to say that the lead singer is one of the most repulsive men i've ever seen.
Bloc Party are ace. I'm so pleased for them! Hurray!!!

I'm not a fan of Interpol though. I hate the whole act that they put on, why can't they just let go and enjoy themselves? Or at least look as though do, it's all so rigid and staged in my opinion.

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

They way the lead singer from Keane dances/moves when he's singing makes me want to puke.

I agree about Interpol, they do absolutely nothing for me...and the guys voice scares the shit outta me - it's like something out of an Orwellian nightmare - I can imagine it being blasted out of public announcement systems by Big Brother to suppress the proles *shudder*

What is all the fuss about Elton's new record as well - critcs seem to be loving it, but its just pure blandness.

Ray Lamontagne was ace, gorgeous song.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Me too, I want to throw up when keane boy dances. It is like the way that young teenage girls dance in a desperate attempt to look cool and also not let go.

Bloc Party were fantastic, next to keane it was just hilarious - bloc party have got so much energy and so much edge and keane are just like an amorphous blob, slowly dying with a kind of whimper in comparison.

I liked Ray Lamontagne too, that voice is quite amazing. I liked interpol too, but not so excited about them really.

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton J

Interpol we're pretty good, the drums were way way too low for slow hands tho... Like eating Glass was excellent, but anyone who went to see them on their latest tour probably knows that already!

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Considering I was only born in 82, I guess this explains my infantile love for style-mag endorsed songs which make my heart flutter and my thoughts feel intensified in agreement and lost in the imagery.

Bloc Party turned down EMI. And various other majors who'd give them one album or drop them.

You had your day with your bands, now's the time of another generation to feel their way blindly into the world, into the world of music (which probably includes going backwards to said bands of yore that you're banging on about) and in love with bands.

What is great at the moment? You sound like such a bitter old man. Which is strange because there're records out there which are incredible, the music scene is amazing at the moment with so much imagination and passion on show.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Ah that was a good show.

I used to think I could stomach Keane but they fell even flatter than expected. And yes the dude's dancing, leaves MUCH to be desired.

Bloc Party were great, bless them they did look kind of nervous being on tv though.

And to those that slag off Interpol, I can see what u mean about rigid, the singer at least, he does hide behind his hair so maybe's he's self conscious. I think the fact u find his voice scary is funny! I spose it is kinda odd but I think that's cool, it makes them sound unique. I can't really explain why I love them, there's just something v cool and mildly funky about them which forces my body to move!

Elton John needs to retire....as do U2...REM....

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

I really liked ray as well, him and Willy Mason are making acoustic music listenable again, good for them! (Now oasis may stop doing acoustic numbers).

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

and embrace might fuck off.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

"I'm sorry but Bloc Party are crap - their lame 'post-punk' sounds are about as cutting edge as The Futureheads. Their new single sounds like The Cure."

have you ever heard the cure? helicopter rules, and i'd say bloc party are pretty damn original. just like biffy they are trying to create a genre of their own and i'd say they're succeeding

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

I am so pissed off I missed it.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

At the end of the day...and I've only just seen this on my mate's video tonight...this particular show encapsulated wgy bands like Bloc Party are so vital to the changing dynamics in music compared to the pedestrian labourings of Keane.
Last night heralded a new era for a lot of people.
Sometimes it is worth saying "Thank God for Jools" even if he does play a lot of shit from time to time.

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Nah, sorry, I really like all three bands although I missed the show (damn)

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

no, I only very recently been tuned in to him. Album review is up coming though so check that out.

Re: Later... With Bloc Party & Interpol & Elton John!!

cool. I have to say the album is a bit "samey" all the way through, but nevertheless i could listen to that voice all day!

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Quick-capsule review:
Keane - Poor. Oh so poor. Make them stop.
Elton John - Underwhelming.
Bloc Party - Brilliant.
Interpol - "Oi! Singer bloke! Sort out the nasal blockage!"
Ray Le...uh...yeah... - Brilliant...will be investigating.
Lunatic country band - Very interesting.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Jools is to TV what Peel was to radio.

Just on a much lesser scale.

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton J

except peel wouldn't have gone anywhere near elton john

Re: Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton J

Actually Peel played quite a bit of Elton John i believe, back in the day. The before-i-was-born-when-Elton-was-good day.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

Ray Lamontagne is AMAZING, the show at Water Rats was one of the best gigs of this year - he sounds like Otis Redding and "Trouble" is one of the albums of the year.

Bloc Pony - overrated. notice they're in the Von Bondies, Les Rythm Digitales slot this year on the NME tour, reckon they'll slip in the same direction.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

I wouldn't scream at Keane for a poor performance. I remember seeing the Killers on Jools and thinking they were godawful but now I'm considering going to see them. Maybe it was a tough night at the office, I think they have the talent there anyway.

An EMA nomination don't come cheap.

Later... with Bloc Party, Interpol and Elton John!

hmmm...Interpol's performance on jools holland was quite lacklustre and for a band who's supposed to be better live than on record, it was slightly disappointing. The gig at the forum the next day though soon made up for that. ohhhhh....why the hell did i sit for that gig.
