Polly Jean's a mummy's and daddy's girl

Dorest songstress and top totty grrrr phworrr etc PJ Harvey has told an Aussie paper that she runs all of her songs by her parents before committing them to tape.

Harvey, thin of face but full of voice, said: "I play my mum and dad the demo versions of songs and get their comments on what I should record and what I should leave."

Her mum, though, wasn't too chuffed with one song from Harvey's latest album Uh Huh Her. "Mum said 'Couldn't you say, 'Who the heck?' I said, 'No, Mum.'" The offending song, 'Who The Fuck?', is indeed a bit rude.

Don't you think?

My parents would veto everything:

"Chris - what is that racket?"
"Erm, it's my band 'Husk', mum. That song's a goer then is it?"

My parents think being in a band called The $hit is hilarious. Our bass players gran was telling all her friends we are called the "dollar hit" apparently. 'We Don't Give a Fuck About $oul' has been pulled from radio playlists a lot. People are still quite hung up on swearing, aren't they? Selfish Cunts.

My friend is in a band called Ass 2 Mouth but he abbreviates it to A2M when parents are involved - and he hasn't played them the song 'Fuck You Grandma' yet either...

Anyone interested in reading more about PJ's songwriting process should check out Siren Rising by James Blandford - he mentions this little snippet in his book.

i thought that biog was totally bloody useless, after reading it i had more questions than when i sat down to start..a sign of a bad biog if ever there was one.

When my teenage band got there first paying gig my Dad asked me on the way out the door whose bass guitar I was carring and was it for the band I was going to see that night. We'd been rehearsing and playing small gigs for a year.

Would've been upsetting if it wasn't so bloody funny. My new songs called "Topshop sponsered my statutory rape charge" but my parents don't know what topshop is so they didn't get it. "sigh"

JonnyRockstar's right, that bio is well worth a read - tons of stuff I didn't know as a longtime fan and pretty nicely written too for an unauthorised biog. This month's Uncut gives it 3 stars, which I think is the same Mojo and Q gave it, so I can only add my recommendation! ;0)
