The much-hyped and long-delayed Nirvana box set will be released in the UK on November 23rd through Geffen.

Entitled 'With The Lights Out', the set features three CDs and a DVD, with a rather puzzling 68 previously unreleased tracks across a total of 81. How, exactly, did Geffen keep them under wraps for this long? More importantly, how many of them are going to be horribly shit?

The set spans the band's entire career, from a cover of Led Zeppelin's 'Heartbreaker' recorded in 1987 to Kurt Cobain's solo acoustic work recorded shortly before his death in 1994. Also included is a 60-page booklet with liner notes by Thurston Moore and writer Neil Strauss. The DVD contains a previously unreleased video of the band performing at Krist Novoselic's mother's house in 1988, as well as music promos and other unreleased live performances.

DiScuss: Excited? Really? If so, why, and if not, why not? Is this a money-making exercise that should have stayed on the drawing board, or is it important that these songs, or versions of existing songs, are released? See the video for In Bloom here.

This should be good. And I don't think the Nirvana legacy has been exploited at all, unlike Hendrix, Biggie and 2Pac and many others. There has been the MTV Unplugged, one live album, one video and this box set. Each of which has been than worth the effort. Only the 'Best of' seemed a bit surplus to requirements to me.

there are some sweet tracks on there that feature on the 'outcesticide' bootleg series. 'Opinion' is a great song, and 'Verse, Chorus, Verse' (aka 'in his hands', rather than the one also known as 'sappy') if it is a studio version will be really exciting.

there is a lot of lame on there. novelty tracks like 'beans' are funny, but a bit wack. i also don't know how much the alternative edits of released album tracks will really add to the legacy, the ones I have heard over the years have not been mindblowing. still, whatever. i have been waiting ten years to get this boxset, and i am pretty sure there will be plenty of awesome therein.

a question: i remember reading that Cobain had recorded a bunch of demos with Michael Stipe in '93. i don't remember in which book i read that and don't know if it is in anyway true, but it doesn't appear that these track have been included in this set. does anyone else remember reading this?

Weird. I wonder if they exist?

When this boxset was announced, i was expecting to see a lot fewer familiar track titles on the track list. Whilst most of them are officially unreleased, most have seen the light of day on bootlegs, there are the ubiquitous alternative edits, and random easy-to-find b-sides. Still, you would hope the box set will have killer sound quality to make it all worthwhile.

slightly off topic....I was just looking on amazon.com, and you can buy Outcesticide III on their second hand bit. i didn't realise buying bootlegs was so easy...

As far as i can remember (and this is based upon the Charles R Cross Biography) the mooted colaboration with Stipe was to occur in mid 1994, with the obvious result that it never happened.

which was worth buying, but if the tracks on this release are gonna be as poor in quality as those, what's the point? the DVD will be good though.

The versions found on the Outcesticide series are taken from various sources, including several from high generation cassette copies. I think it's fair to say this release will contain cleaned up versions from the best sources available.

Blandest is a great little outtake, and the other stuff looks pretty interesting (God knows what their version of Seasons in the sun is like), but overall I doubt the set will be worth forty notes.

Wouldn't mind it for Christmas though.

..and i think thats the point. many fans of nirvana 'who dont mind it' will find themselves with it for christmas, im talking of the younger fans here, not you teepee but anyone from my age down i suppose. and no im not saying that older peopel wont get it, im just saying that younger ones will get it for christmas. iv made this post too complicated now.
