Based on a range of factors, from board discussions, reviews so far this year and utterly subjective personal opinion, DiS' editor has compiled the twenty best independent albums of the first half of 2009 to coincide with Independent's Day.
Before we get to the list, here's the organisers explanation of what Independent's Day (or ID:09) is:
ID:09, the second annual celebration of independent music, is about shining a spotlight on the exciting and diverse musical talent of the independent sector, a sector first home to artists including The Beatles, Elvis and Coldplay and still home to the likes of Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys and Bjork, plus thousands of rising stars.
After the unprecedented public excitement surrounding the occasion last year, Independents Day 2009 will actually be a full week of celebrations, starting from July 4th. There will be live gigs, television specials and much more, as music lovers everywhere are encouraged to show their support for independent music.
The focus of celebrations will be a series of gigs at London’s prestigious ICA venue between the 6th and 10th July. The events will bring together some of the UK’s most successful independent labels, with a different label curating each night, showcasing some of their finest acts. In addition to the label nights, one evening is being curated by the legendary independent record store, Rough Trade East. The opening nights (Monday and Tuesday) will be introduced by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens.

And in no particular order, here are 20 albums, compiled as a Spotify playlist for you to flick through as if they were vinyl sat in a virtual DiS-recommended rack beneath a clever listening booth. listened to Dragonslayer this a.m.
...and am seriously pondering whether it's my favourite album EVER
Dirty Projectors' 'Stillness Is the Move' may be the best indie-pop-song of the year that ain't by SunRub
gah...! does anyone else keep getting lost in that ACo image?!
it's like being an undergrad again - getting trapped in front of a fractal-based screensaver, after one too many
grr.. two things...
1) the new animal collective isnt 'that' good y'know (its like neon bible all over again)
2) why people haven't become obsessed by the latest paper chase album i dont know, its quite frankly fucking awesome...
wot, no Sunn O)))?
Guess the exact status of what your it actually came out is questionable, but Women - Women gets a shout out from me.
I'm very slow on the indie music uptake this year
GRZL B is pretty damn nice but alot of it just washes over me so far, I'll keep on with it though they have to be one of my fave indie bands. AC didn't do much for me at all apart from Brother Sport. I'm intruiged by Fever Ray but don't know if I should buy it or not. I've been meaning to check out Morderat for ages now as well. I bought Danananananaykroyd but gave it to my sister for a bday and still haven't heard it even though I was really hyped for it when it was announced. The Horrors is kind of weak. So my favourite from that list would have to be Dirty Projectors I think, it really suprised me Stillness Is The Move is fantastic.
Great Lengths by Martyn is well worth a look for some dance acction, its on his very own independent label 3024.
2009...
...and it's up there with the best of them this year.
surely
And so i watch you from afar's debut should be in that list?
Love is a Liability
by FaltyDL would be on there for mine. Jimi, get Fever Ray at once - it's an awesome album. I second your Martyn call but while I love the production on Stillness is the Move that vocal grates as badly as La Roux (or one half of La Roux). I thought the Moderat album was disappointing.
FaltyDL!
of course he is brilliant. Have you grabbed the Sonic Router mix he did for us yet? its up now!
I was very suprised by DP I heard the odd bit buy them over the years and always thought it was a bit annoying and I thought the same of Bitte Orcha after hearing it first but for the moment at least I think its ace!
downloaded it today!
Haven't listened to it yet - think it would distract me too much from this copywriting assignment I've got. Looking forward to it. A lot.
no Let's wrestle?
In the court of the wrestling let's is a bloody classic.
It's not on Spotify,
but surely Bromst by Dan Deacon is one of the year's best so far? Repo by Black Dice too.
Antlers or Akron
Missing The Antlers "Hospice" and Akron/Family's "Set 'Em Wild Set 'Em Free"
Glad to see some Soap & Skin love
That album is amazing.
missed a couple of great albums
woods-songs of shame
japandroids
ganglians-monster head room
i am dazed, shocked, confused-The phantom band- Checkmate savage
probably my favourite album of the year!
yup
the Soap&Skin album is definitely one of my favourites this year.
and also pleased to see My Latest Novel mentioned also. The album's growing on me more and more, and will probably continue to do so after their great gig yesterday.
think that...
grammatics should be on this lists.
Pain of Being Pure at Heart
is my favourite so far, with the Joy Formidable and Pink Mountaintops in the chasing pack.
