Crystal Antlers, The Invisible and Three Trapped Tigers could probably all headline DiScover gigs themselves, but on Wednesday they played on the same bill at our Sheffield event. Weren't we lucky?
Of course, we knew what to expect from The Invisible, who'd turned in a fantastically funky set of interesting pop the previous night at our Deaf Institute showcase in Manchester, but the other two were slightly more of an unknown quantity.
First up, Three Trapped Tigers bent minds with a frenetic, glitch-heavy set that reminded us of Warp's finest; somewhere between Battles and Squarepusher, say. It was some of the most technically accomplished noise-making we've heard in a long, long time.
Crystal Antlers made a heck of a racket, too - though theirs was pitched somewhere closer to the door of, um, The Doors. If Jim Morrison had been even angrier, that is. Playing tracks from last year's EP and forthcoming full-length debut Tentacles, the quintet (including everybody's favourite percussionist, Sexual Chocolate) more than justified their headliner status. And on a bill like this, that's some compliment.
DiScuss: Were you there? Who did you like best? Excited about Dananana... next month? It's our birthday!

TTT amazing
going to see them tomorrow in london @ macbeth.
I was there..
really enjoyed the invisible, after having heard literally nothing about them before. TTT were again awesome, probably my favourite "new" band at the moment. CA were incredibly dull on the most part.
wasn't going to 'go there'
but yes, CA are a bit boring aren't they. EP is great, but live it's a bit lame.
I really enjoyed it
But it was a shame that I had to leave after two crystal antlers songs. Just hope School of Seven bells don't start that late otherwise there will be no point in me going.
Yeah
there were 2 good songs, ones that actually kept me interested throughout. But after all the praise they get I was fairly disappointed.
I did so enjoy this gig
I only saw TTT from the back above many heads, but I was stood just behind Gary as he took the photos of Dave Okumu of The Invisible thinking now that's going to be good, and now there they are, and they are excellent; stunning indeed.
Glad you squeezed in his shoes on one shot (can't have been easy)- his feet are a key part of the action . I feel quite privileged to have been there to see this great band.
Three bands making totally different music, and all very good. I really enjoyed this gig, for me the best one yet.
The Crystal Antlers song 'we have not played before' really rocks. I heard it last night in Manchester with the same intro. Its funny how the same band playing the same set can come across differently to you when you are stood at the other side of the stage - one side percussion - the other organ. In a way this band embodies the eclectic feel of the gig.
You have some great gigs lined up - I'm so looking forward to The Mae Shi & Telepathe who I've not seen before, and to Abe Vigoda who one my faves.
great fun
three trapped tigers completely owned this. crystal antlers were ok i guess, although i'm not their biggest fan.
great photos mr wolstenholme
also the jivetastic moves of sexual chocolate kept me entranced. had not heard ttt before but really enjoyed them. as for the invisible, it wasnt my cup of tea.
Haha
Feet are always important, as are hands, but they're generally easier to get in.
Glad you enjoyed the gig, and the pictures :-)
apologies
for the late finish. trouble was, all the bands had a *lot* of stuff to set up/soundcheck this time, TTT were late and the options were A. let Crystal Antlers play two songs, or B. let them carry on past curfew.
in future, I'm hoping we can start setting up earlier and stick to the 11.30pm cut off - which should be fine for most people, I think.
