It's not every day that we get a rush of excitement so insatiably captivating that we feel the need to have to tell our friends (i.e. you) all about it right away.
However, that was the feeling we got last Saturday night (November 1st) at The Royal in Derby thanks to LA-based quintet The Airborne Toxic Event's quite astonishing first UK headline performance. Musically there are elements of the likes of Modest Mouse, a more pop sensible National or even a less pretentious Arcade Fire - check out 'Wishing Well', surely a contender to be next year's 'Rebellion (Lies)' and undoubtedly set to be a staple of many an indie club night for years to come. Throw in hooks that have the immediacy of the first Strokes record and a clutch of tunes that simply ooze a "once heard, forever cherished" notion about them and we guarantee you'll be charmed in an instant.
Currently embarking on the 30 Shows In 30 Days tour that runs throughout the entire month of November, including several dates with fellow DiS faves Chairlift, their self-titled debut album, released to a hail of critical acclaim back home in the States in August of this year, finally comes out in the UK in January 2009 on Majordomo Records. We've got our copy on order already and we think you should too...

The Futureheads: Jaff on musical trends / the future of music
I can see why people like this
but to me it sounds like Arcade Fire, only not as good, and doing a U2 impression (er, so I'd probably says a more prenentious Arcade Fire). Pitchfork's review of the album was a little on the harsh side, mind.
Get with it grandad Dom ...
the album is freely available on emusic, and darn tooting it is too.
Interesting.
Pitchfork say, "The Airborne Toxic Event is an album that's almost insulting in its unoriginality," but DiS say, "a more pop sensible National or even a less pretentious Arcade Fire."
It would be rude not to check them out really.
Roll on home time.
i heard
their song 'gasoline' on the radio and thought it was razorlight.
I heard that song repeatedly on Fifa 09.
and thought it was horribly generic ITV indie.
Hasn't got much balls, has it?
I like that their name references 'White Noise'
Watching the video now, it's kind of okay but I think I'd need to hear it loud and not through tinny laptop speakers.
gonna have to go with pitchfork's opinion on this.
This is spectacularly derivative. Given the right push, it'll be huge. Personally, it makes me feel ill.
I think you'll find that's probably
the US import CE. The proper UK release is definitely cited for January of next year.
If Pitchfork told you to walk blindfolded
down the fast lane of the M1 between junctions 19 and 20 with your hands tied behind your back would you do it? Exactly...
not into this myself
it's like a noughties Goo Goo Dolls, feels very calculated...
Quite rubbish
crap vocals, horribly polished and ever-so treny boring sound.
You might trust their opinions though,
i'm not going to bother listening to this band
My buddy loves 'em
and he *generally* has good taste. All I hear is a Bono impersonation.
um
I held out hopes, but this is really like music from the OC/Buffy.
Goo Goo Dolls comparisons pretty close, just throw in a touch of Killers and Franz (their version of All my Friends is pretty close, no?). Future best second stage headliners, 5 years time when I've finally given up on guitar music completely.
I guess that's the point of these articles, though...
... to provoke debate ("what do you think"). and it's one DiS writer, after all. Maybe it should be "Dom Gourlay likes The Airborne Toxic Event", or "Rob Webb likes Chairlift" to make that clearer...
...
Personally I'll be interested to see these live, then I'll make my mind up.
I like Chairlift
too, and these are supporting them in Nottingham 2 weeks today.
Nice lineup
And, yes, sometimes more than one of us likes the same band... imagine that!
were fantastic live
the album is a wee bit tiresome though.
DiS likes...
lots of dull shit.
I see they are supporting Frightened Rabbit
when I go see them in Glasgow (29th), I'm really looking forward to this now!
what's so good about them live anyway?
can imagine them probably being a lot more intense, maybe
They really do take it to another level live
much as Arcade Fire and The Feeling do.
They are much more intense
yet at the same time there's an almost playful edge about them, even down to the way they interact with the crowd.
I'm also a sucker for bands who play pass the parcel with their instruments - it means you can never take your eyes away from the stage for a second or else you end up losing track I guess...
yeah
the concept of "we" is a ridiculous one.
Isn't this melody/lyric
directly ripped from "All My Friends" by LCD Soundsystem? That first line is almost identical!
fortune favours
yes, it bloody well is. except with added "lady in red".
From the descriptions above
both for and against, I can safely say that I shan't waste time with this lot.
oooh yes
they are much much much better live. and they knows that themselves, hence the 30 gigs in 30 days thing.
Mmmm
I was a bit dissapointed by the record, although I have to give it more listens.
