The Weekly DiScussion: what's on your Summer '08 megamix?
September 1st signaled the end of the Summer. And what a Summer it has been, with the festival season seeming to start way back in April when the sun came up in the desert for Coachella. This was quickly followed by Camden Crawl and The Great Escape_ in Brighton offering many UK music fans a first glance of the bands tipped for big(ger) things in 2008.
It's a near impossible task to try to encapsulate a summer in one compilation (although those folks at Now That's What I Call... don't half try) but the following is DiS' returning Editor's attempt at a personal soundtrack to the Summer of 2008.
We'd like to know what songs you would use to finish this tape, and what would make it onto your Summer '08 road trip C90/CDR?
- Death Cab for Cutie 'I Will Possess Your Heart'
Words like throb and haunting don't even begin to do this justice. The track seems to have followed me on my travels this year and I was surprised to hear many of the American radio stations playing it in full.
- Late of the Pier 'Space and the Woods'
Sitting atop what sounds like the scuttling skitter of Les Savy Fav dragging Klaxon's into the pit is the Doobee-dooh-dooh oooh-ooh-dooh. And that riff (or something sorta like it) is the sound that's been heard hurtling around clubs and fields this summer. LOTP may not have pioneered a genre or a movement but they're clearly crossing over and spearheading a lot of fun.
- Friendly Fires 'Paris'
Probably the best debut single released last year and this slightly souped-up version on their self-titled debut album is fantastic. Their set at Reading t'other weekend was both joyful and uplifting.
- Crystal Castles 'Courtship Dating'
Few bands have been as divisive as this lot but their set at The Great Escape silenced a few of the doubters amongst our editorial team and their packed show at Reading seemed to convert a few of you too.
- Cobra Starship 'I Kissed a Boy'
Past summers have bought us parody 'hits' from the likes of The Shirehorses, Weird Al Yankovic and Mike Flowers Pops. Last week emo-opportunists Cobra Starship rocked up one of this summer's biggest hits. This track was included on the latest FallOutBoy compilation entitled Friends or Enemies available here.
DiScuss: How would you finish this tape? Have you been cranking out Santogold or Slipknot? Bon Iver or Bloc Party? Are tracks by The Field, El Guincho, Vampire Weekend and Gui Borratto still rocking your stereo? Has this Summer been all about glitches or dusty geetars?

Anything off the Cats In Paris album
and most recent Maps & Atlases EP
Basicly
the whole Cut Copy album
These aren't current songs at all
but I've found myself returning to the following a lot:
Jens Lekman - Tram Nr 7 to Heaven (and many others) - we went to Gothenburg, and all the places he sings about came to life, and we rode the aforementioned tram with some homeless people and a guy who was huffing furiously. We also stayed on the line to Kortedala.
Dirty Three - Sad Sexy - It's a lovely dark winter night all in one song, I don't like summer much.
El Guincho - Algeranza LP - this is probably the summeriest thing, really looking forward to seeing him at EOTR (as long as he's still playing).
Lizzy Mercier Descloux - Wawa - I can't understand why this amazing woman isn't more revered.
