The Weekly DiScussion: our albums of the year, so far

Six months into 2007 (almost...) and there’s already a not-so-proverbial shit-tonne of albums in contention for the coveted Album of the Year ‘gong’ at DiS – again, the winner will be selected by you, the readers, from a shortlist compiled by us. Yup.

Seems like as good a time as any, then, to weed out any that might’ve been acclaimed at the time but, in hindsight, maybe ain’t so stunning as we initially thought. And we need you guys to help us out. Listed below are a number of records that received hearty slaps on the back from the DiS critics, but are they still worth a damn? Are Field Music’s Tones Of Town and Jamie T’s Panic Prevention really ten-outta-ten albums? Shouldn’t Deerhunter’s Cryptograms have received a maximum score? (Few records have been on rotation as often, at my place at least). Was Bloc Party’s A Weekend In The City any good in the first place, really?

Here’s a selection of what we’ve enjoyed – a lot – since December turned into January and a whole new year. Do please tell us about your favourite albums of the year so far – after all, ultimately it’s you that decides our album of the year come the end of 2007…

I reckon you can add the new albums from Justice, Queens Of The Stone Age and The Icarus Line to that list – all release their respective LPs next week. Then, later this month, there are new records from Souvaris, No Age, Annuals and, of course, The White Stripes. We’ve been playing Icky Thump this morning. It’s a bit icky, alright.

DiScuss: What are your favourite albums of the year so far?

Kubichek

Air Formation
The Pony Collaboration
The Maccabees
albums are all in my picks of the year so far.
I'm surprised to see The Cribs record - by far the worst of their three albums to date - and 'A Weekend In The City' in there though.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow and Deerhunter

are clear favourites forme. As are Grails, Grouper, Burial (vinyl release) and The Field. Open Mouth didn't dissapoint in the slightest, neither did Stars of the Lid, Exploding Star Orchestra or Findlay Brown. Maps' debut is great, and Melt Banana deserve a big mention.
Others I've enjoyed:
MV & EE
Odawas
Robert Gomez
The Twilight Sad
Basquiat Strings.
u-ziq

this and that

bloc party-massive dissapointment, self important and boring for me

arcade fire-moments of greatness but again a bit pompus and self imortant

Cribs-always gonna deliver great pop tunes, does just that but its not as good as the new fella's

Jaimie T- started off hating it, started to like it, then got bored of it, now i absolutely love it except fot 'money'which i find a bit cack for some reason.

klaxons- surprisingly good
The national- a nice surprise (for me at least)
the shins-good, but like the cribs not as good as the last album.

battles- i'm not convinced

Missing

No Bondo Do Rolê or Arctic Monkeys?

i'm not sure a weekend in the city deserves to be on this list

it's not that it's not a good album,it's just it hasn't rewarded repeat listens like the others in this list. my favourites so far this year have been laura veirs, feist, bjork, shady bard and maps.

forgot...

...about the arctic monkeys album, it superb. Hasn't got the standout tracks of the first album, but it an album in the true sense of the word. great sound, geart drumming, great lyrics...all round great band.

For me

Bloc Party is worthy. So my list, in no particular order=

Deerhunter- Cryptograms
Bloc Party- AWITC
El-P- I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Blonde Redhead- 23 (if pushed, this would be my favourite of the year)
Battles- Mirrored

I really want to hear Wires On Fire in full, and I am pretty certain both the QOTSA and Iccy Line will make my end of year list too.

oh and that A Sunny Day In Glasgow

has caught my interest, will be buying that soon.

'Was Bloc Party’s A Weekend In The City any good in the first place, really?'

A Weekend In The City was patchy. The music's fantastic throughout, but Jesus, there are some Godawful lyrics on there.

LCD

wins for me, closely followed by Arcade fire. Quite like the Battles one, it is interesting. Weekend in the city is ok but not up to silent alarm standards. When I first listened to it wasn't too impressed, then forgot about it for a while and listened to it last week and it is better than I remembered. Surprised that the field music one was so highly praised here, got it partially because of the DiS review and it's OK but nothing special.

I think this will soon be a pointless discussion soon though when Icky Thump arrives, possibly their best yet.

Mine are

The Shins
Bright Eyes (some reason didn't get reviewed?!)
Maccabees
Jamie T
Bloc Party
Deerhunter
Battles

2007 has been pretty damn impressive

Battles
LCD
Klaxons
Kubichek!
Maccabees
Justice

...

Of Montreal
Battles
Menomena
Times New Viking
Handsome Furs

Shy Child > Simian Mobile Disco

and I agree with everyone who's said The Maccabees should be in there. But not with Dom Gourlay claiming that Mens Needs, Womans Needs, Whatever is the worst Cribs album yet, because it quite blatantly is the ace. So there.

This is no 'final' list for now...

...Just some highly rated LPs from the archive...

Inevitably, I missed a couple ;o)
x

Can we include Les Inc?

If so, that. I chuffing love it.

No

Compilation, innit.
And it's shit.

EL-P Mike!

Great album.

Actually...

I just saw you haven't missed that out. Good one.

mine...

Sound of Silver
Boxer
Tones of Town
Neon Bible
and The Good, The Bad and the Queen

hmmm....

dizzee rascal's new album is ace. fo' shizzle etc.

...first 6 months of 2007...

The National - Boxer (#1 by miles)
Blonde Redhead - 23
Feist - The Reminder
Deerhunter - Crytograms
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Fields - Everything Last Winter (underrated IMO!)

It's been a shit year so far...

Loads of good enough albums, but nothing has really stood out, and there has been a distinct epidemic of Second Album Syndrome - loads of shite follow ups (Bloc Party leading the pack). Lets hope that we have some gems to look forward to in the coming months. Interpol, White Stripes and maybe Radiohead'll sling LP7 our way before the year is up. Of what we've had, Panda Bear was nice but never truly gripping, Neon Bible wouldve been great if it hadnt had Funeral to follow, and the Shins is a charming listen but hardly a stunner.

BJORK BJORK!

Has to be the new Bjork album by farrrrr!

if you can get hold of it..

Vampire Weekend is amazing and my #1 of the year so far..

Person Pitch

by far my favourite.

Also:

Battles
Shins
Feist
A Sunny Day In Glasgow
Justice
Stars Of The Lid
of Montreal

I keep forgetting to listen to Deerhunter, but I reckon I'd like it a lot if I gave it more of a chance. I'm halfway through my first listen of Wooden Wand - James & the Quiet, so it's a bit soon to say it's one of my favourites, but i am liking it a lot so far.

hmmm.

Nothing really. Well, I've only actually bought 1 album that was released this year (Sound of Silver.) I'm waiting to get my hands on the new JPL one.

oh and Sound of Silver

but it needs a few more listens.

mine...

blonde redhead
battles
shellac
twilight sad
ginderman

If Myth Takes by !!!

doesn't make the end of year list, I'll....well, I'll be very upset. Great album.

My favourites this year are (entirely predictable, some might think)

Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City
It's perhaps not as good as it seemed on first listen, and perhaps not quite as good as Silent Alarm, but it's still a fine album. There's so much potential in Bloc Party, they're the ones we need to watch.

The Cribs - Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever
Indie pop at it's finest. I've listened to it at least once a day since the day it was released. It's got more choruses and hooks in one song than some manage in a whole career.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
It's just a brilliant album, and deservedly propelled them on to bigger things. It's so grand, full of ambition, and the scope is massive.

The Cooper Temple Clause - Make This Your Own
Fair enough, not the Coopers best, by a long shot, but it's still got more ideas, more invention bursting out of it's seams than so many other records. It really is a shame that they've called it quits. They had the potential to be huge.

Also, not the best, but still good:
Klaxons - Myths Of The New Future
BRMC - Baby 81
Idlewild - Make Another World (I just can't dislike Idlewild. Their back catalogue just means too much to me)

Then again, there's also been some absolute shit. The View, anyone?

Yes, very nice list

Although after relentless listens the Electrelane LP did nothing for me.
And I don't get Deerhoof even though I know I probably should.
In place of those two, I'd have Arctic Monkeys and Modest Mouse, then my list would be pretty identical to the articles.

good list

glad Bloc Party was in there!! what is wrong with this album exactly???? all i hear is hate towards it!! it is an awkward listen in places but i think that hightens the theme of the album, its one of my favs of the year any way the rest are

Bright Eyes (yes, where was the review????)

Nine Inch Nails- great ideas throughout although not the best work he's done there are some blinding tracks on it.

Sage Francis- some brilliant songs on this although its his weakest work, however that really means nothing.

Battles-well this just gets better with each listen!

el-p - better than fantastic damage?? maybe!!

and 23

's quite good.

Why

has there been no review, nor even a mention anywhere on the message boards of the new Neurosis album, Given to the Rising? It's phenomenal

no it's not!

Shellac?

I love them but the version of end of radio just makes me feel a little bit queasy, it could have been so great, it's amazing and electrifying live, yet on record it just teases you with how great it could have been.

Sound of Silver, Reminder and Person Pitch. I still need to give the Battles one more listens.

Clone

people are people

1- Brett Anderson - Brett Anderson
2- Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position
3- Perry Blake - Canyon Songs
4- Bill Callahan - Woke on A Whaleheart

19- Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
20- The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse

The Black Angels

'Passover' - album of the year, no contest.

aIf there was a contest, The Besnard Lakes would come second with 'Are The Dark Horse'

And Grinderman would be third.

And The Kissaway Trail would be fourth.

Fact!

New Queens of the Stone Age is ace too.
And on the singer-songwriter front, watch out for Jacob Golden. And also Cherry Ghost.

Come on, Block Party's last album is $@#%!

Top 5...

...in order (probably):

1. Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss
2. The National - Boxer
3. 65daysofstatic - Destruction of Small Ideas
4. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
5. Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City

This is how my list is looking thus far

All at least 8/10 worthy albums...

1. The Cooper Temple Clause - Make This Your Own
2. Goldrush - The Heart Is The Place
3. The Hours - Narcissus Road
4. The Little Ones - Sing Song
5. The Bees - Octopus
6. Editors - An End Has A Start
7. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81
8. Kubichek! - Not Enough Night
9. Fields - Everything Last Winter
10. Kings Of Leon - Because Of The Times
11. Mumm-Ra - These Things Move In Threes
12. Cornelius - Sensuous
13. Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future
14. Acid Mothers Temple - Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under The Stars
15. The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
16. Radicalfashion - Odori
17. The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters
18. Ghosts - The World Is Outside
19. Blonde Redhead - 23
20. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Potential entries so far are The National, Dragons, The Besnard Lakes and The Chemical Brothers.

yes

def. arcade fire, im looking forward to the white stripes and qotsa cd this month. also i like this new band called atlas.

LCD...

then justice and bjork

Much against everyone's advice...

Except DiS...

Field Music! Yes please.

Also LCD for me so far. Plus El-P, Panda Bear and Of Montreal. Battles still needs work.

Although I need to check out Cribs, Blonde Redhead, National and Besnard Lakes.

Yup,

'Sounds of Silver' is a standout album so far this year, as is The Maccabees' debut and Klaxons' first effort (though it's proved to be slightly more disposable than I'd first thought). Where's Bright Eyes on the list though? 'Cassadaga' gets more involving with every listen, even if it doesn't quite match his previous highlights.

Zozobra - Harmonic Tremors

Neurosis - Given To The Rising

but then given last years Tom Waits fiasco perhaps DiS has given up on reviewing truly great albums...?

Field Music is the album of the year...

if not decade!!

Besides that I've enjoyed:

Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity
Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position
Electrelane - No Shouts No Calls
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City
The Clientele - God Save The Clientele
Gruff Rhys - Candylion

.

1.Low - Drums and Guns
2.Modest Mouse - We Where Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
3.Panda Bear - Person Pitch
4.Battles Mirrored
5.The Good the Bad and The Queen -TGTBATQ
6.Blonde Redhead - 23

.

5. low - drums and guns
4. grinderman - grinderman
3. dizzee rascal - maths and english
2. shellac - excellent italian greyhound (don't see why people don't like this, it's great)
1. battles - mirrored (yeah i know i'm predictable)

no age and future of the left are almost definitely gonna make the list soon enough.

One landmark album, will be Album of the Year

1. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

if you don't know the story it goes something like this: "The birth of a daughter, alienation and depression in Norway, and subsequent separation from his wife and new child gave him plenty to mull over, work out."

still play this album at least once a week. DiS gave it a 8 but is really a 10. the music gets to you first but than you start to figure out what he is talking about. the lyrics are what takes it to another level because his soul is there for all to witness. he covers things like a lot of sex, drugs, rock and religion and in different ways but we are all human after all. brilliant.

hmmm

65daysofstatic - Destruction of small ideas

Apart from that Bloc Party and Incubus were alright I suppose.

Panda Bear

is still the number one for me. Not a single other record this year has made the hair on the back of neck stand up like that.

(though that may have something to do with the fact that the first time I heard the record, I was using a hair dryer while in the bath and accidentally dropped it in)

some sort of floating top 10...

Battles - Mirrored
NIN - Year Zero
El-p - I'll Sleep...
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
Aereogramme - My Heart Has a Wish...
Klaxons - Myths...
Amon Tobin - Foley Room
The National - Boxer
CocoRosie - The Adventures...

A few good 'uns

Battles
Panda Bear
Do Make Say Think
Grails
Deerhoof
LCD Soundsystem

a lot does depend on what we actually get

i.e. we have no Neurosis LP.

Did ANYONE

else buy Blue Birds Blood?! It's so so so good

What counts?

My favourite so far is Elliott Smith - 'New Moon', even the stuff he left off his main releases was the stuff of pure genius, but maybe that doesn't qualify as it comes from 10 year old sessions. The Decemberists - 'The Crane Wife', also excellent - but was out and about in the US in 2006, but the UK early 2007. Apart from them, Bright Eyes, The Shins, The Little Ones and Kings of Leon have had plenty of time in the stereo. Great debate - I am now going to get the 2nd LCD album thanks to this (not sure why I haven't already!). More great stuff still to come - White Stripes/Spritiualized/Rilo Kiley/Interpol/New Pornographers.... it could be an all round cracking year!

Rather epic list:

http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/1836006#r1836122

Favourites:

David Thomas Broughton - Red Deer Club Tour EP
Bloc Party - AWITC
A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Scribble..
Bright Eyes - Cassadaga (I suppose)
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
The National - Boxer
Battles - Mirrored
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna
Panda Bear - Person Pitch

From that list

I choose El-P. Nice.

Top 10 so far

2007 has been a bit of a corker thus far I reckon. My ever changing top 11 looks like this
Albums of 2007 as of June 2007
===============================
[1] - LCD Soundsystem - Sounds of silver
[2] - The Field - From here we go sublime
[3] - QOTSA - Era Vulgaris
[4] - Pole - Steingarten
[5] - Gui Boratto - Chromophobia
[6] - Arctic Monkeys - Favorite Worst Nightmare
[7] - Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
[8] - Deerhunter - Cryptograms
[9] - Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
[10] - Battles - Mirrored
[11] - Dalek - Abandoned Language

Tough to order

Them but here's a top 9

Battles - Mirrored
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Fucked Up - Hidden World
Loney, Dear - Loney, Noir
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Deerhoof - Friend Oppurtunity
Paul Steel - April & I
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, are you the destroyer

and...

...Fountains of Wayne - Traffic and Weather!

Good to see so many people voting for Of Montreal...

New London Scala show on sale now!

Seems like

all the Clipse love is reserved exclusively for reviewers. Is hip-hop still a dirty word around here?

Love left for Dalek

it depends. Dalek's abandoned language is a great record. labelled as "experimental hip hop", there is the occasional rapping but it is over whelmed by the ocean of foreboding noise building through each track, so not sure if anyone else would call this hip hop.

Now Kanye West is a dirty word in my book.....

Cack of the year so far...

what about the biggest turds of the year. some of mine:

-RJD2- third hand. really, really bad. and dead ringer was so enjoyable

-Two Lone Swordsmen - the wrong meeting. the wrong idea more like. tiny reminders seems so very very long ago

-apparat - walls. disappointing

anyone else to add to the pile of cack?

sermon

I'm sure everyone will dissagree with me, but after seeing Reverend an the Makers in Leicester last month, i firmly believe that Reverend and The Makers will make the best and most important album of the yeah. A genuine statement of intent. Certainly in terms of music that has any commercial viability. I dont see the point in comparing them to the likes of Battles etc...

John Maclure has a vison and way with lyrics that is ahead of the game in my eyes.

So far, I can only manage a top 5

1. Battles - Mirrored
2. Forget Cassettes - Salt
3. Trans Am - Sex Change
4. Low - Drums & Guns
5. Ghost - In Stormy Nights

For me, these are my favourites:

Biffy Clyro
Explosions In The Sky
Modest Mouse
Sondre Lerche
The Shins

Current feelings ^

Mine

Grabba Grabba Tape
Yourcodenameis:milo
DJ Scotch Egg
Bloc Party

most definitely

Eluvium.
and Aereogramme's last effort is deservedly up there too, shame they had to stop really.

Whoops

Sorry, didn't mean to sound accusatory - it sounded like a rhetorical question in my head!

The YCNI:M

disc has certainly had the most play of anything this year on my stereo.

For what it's worth in no particular order

Wires on Fire - WoF
the Cribs - Mens Needs
The Hold Steady - Boys & Girls in America (borderline this year)
Malajube - Trompe L'Oeil

And QOTSA, Arcade Fire and Battles.

Bloc Party are unlikely to make my end of year top list. A good album but I found the lyrics rather gauche and the music patchy. They're best when they rock out, and I hope they realise this for the next album.

mostly agree

not heard battles so no comment on that one but bloc party are crap and jamie t rocks. would also not The Rakes, Good Shoes and The Maccabees also delivered great albums and the Maximo Park was rather disappointing.

Exactly

Pretentious drivel that sounds like it was written by a 12 year old.

Kubichek!!!

was the biggest surprise for me this year. was not expecting it to be half as good as it was.

Can't even listen to it all the way through

worst bjork album yet. i have heard it all but not in one sitting.

My Top 5 Albums Of '07

Jamie T is dull.

Mine are

battles - mirrored
Coconut records (Jason Schwartzmann - nighttiming
Klaxons - myths of the near future
The national - boxer
of montreal - hissing fauna...

that's all

God,

at least someone else here's listened to NIN's Year Zero. Amazing album, and the one I've listened to most so far in a year that's offered !!!'s Myth Takes, LCD's Sound of Silver, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible and many more. Year Zero just keeps dragging me back to it.

Tones of Town

I'm amazed that there are so few positive comments for Field Music. I can only assume that it's still unheard by most people, otherwise it would surely be in everyone's list.

It's definitely my album of the year, by far.

Mine

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna
Grinderman
YCNI:M
Tegan and Sara - The Con (heard a leaked copy...so good)

I anticipate Interpol to be just as good, based on the single...

Favourite newbies of the last couple of weeks

Trembling Blue Stars
Bill Callahan

2007 hasn;t been amazing for me so far

Although I'm currently giving Do Make Say Think my first listen and I'm really enjoying it.

otherwise bloc party has been best for me and that still hasn't been amazing, klaxons was good, arcade fire a little dissapointing

and also I need to hear more but I'm enjoying The National's effort so far xo

this has made me realise

that there have been lots of quite good albums this year but from artists whose previous album was a lot better.

bright eyes, patrick wolf, the shins, the arcade fire, arctic monkeys, bloc party, the cribs, feist.

besnard lakes, of montreal and the hold steady (not really 2007) are the best.

in alphabetical order

( too early to order them )
A sunny day in Glasgow
Benni Hemm Hemm

Deerhoof
Deerhunter
Fury of the headteachers
Hearts of black science
Loren Dent
Low
Marissa Nadler
Ola Podrida
Orouni

The Besnard Lakes
The Clientele

All very good albums but none would have made my top5 last year...

so far so good

LCD
Arcadde Fire
(U.N.K.L.E)
B.R.M.C.
The Good, The Bad & The Queen (surprise)
Bjork

the rest albums I've listened this year didn't convince me as much to put them here or haven't heard the whole things yet

uhhh...

forgot about Besnard Lakes

TG, TB & TQ

yeah! wheres the love?!

its a brilliant record... the ending of "Three Changes"/"Green Fields"/title-track is absolutely stunning.

#1= Deerhunter - cryptograms /fluorescent grey EP

2 Caribou - andorra
3 Panda Bear - person pitch
4 Sunny Day in Glasgow - scribble mural..
5 Papercuts - Can't Go Back

this year started an unhealthy obsession with Deerhunter for me. after i heard the flourescent grey EP i was hooked

also - listen to the new Caribou - its fucking fantasti

The National

Isn't it the greatest album of the year, I mean, one song better that the other. I can't stop listening to it. Great voice, great sound and very talented musicians.

The Twilight Sad

are the most exciting thing I've heard this year - Coming round to Deerhunter as well
