2006: twelve whole months of DiS running about the country, up stairs and down basements, into hotel rooms and outside into pub gardens, chasing bands. It's what we do, so that you don't have to.
Here, as an end-of-year special, we've collected some of our favourite us against them pieces; there are DiScover pieces, regular face-to-face affairs, and a selection of Some Questions pieces. For the uninitiated, Some Questions is our opportunity to ask bands things that, more often than not, have nothing to do with music. Pointless? Yes, maybe. Funny? Sometimes...
So, why not click your way to some feature fun? Yip yip yippie...
You know, normal things... with bands that aren't really weeeeee
My Chemical Romance
LOL @ emo? The Daily Mail didn't, and we told MCR all about it...
Don't call them nu-metal. We didn't. And they seemed to like us...
James Mercer told us about their new record, due January. We split the interview into two parts, with the second part also due January!
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
Will they? Won't they? Record another album, that is. Conrad Keely revealed little to DiS, but we like him all the same...
Owen Pallett won both awards and hearts in 2006 under his FF moniker; we grabbed him before a show at London's Scala and asked him things...
They are from Brighton! They play rock music, really fast! We like these things! They have arcade machines on the pier, you know...
They're a massive band, and for once we're not talking girth. DiS shot the proverbial with drummer Danny Carey...
Mates Of State
Awwww, they're married, with a kid. But they're not shit! Hooray for cute things that aren't shit!
DiS went out, got drunk, ended up doing an interview. What's that about? A bit like this, really...
He's called Mark, you know. Not 'Sparklehorse'. Really, what sort of mother would...
Space-rockin' of the finest vintage, unless you prefer The Flaming Lips. Which, to be honest, lots of people do. But they should shut up...
They came back in 2006, fitter, happier and a man short! They still rocked, mind, which was nice. Nice...
Pretty Girls Make Graves
Another band with an entry on Our 66, PGMG's female pair Andrea and Leona were taken to one side before the band's Islington Academy show for a DiS grilling. What does 'euphemism' mean?
YES! That Underworld. Wonder if they watch Trainspotting every time it's on Film4 like we do...
From beyond the grave and everything! You get what we mean...
The Cooper Temple Clause
They've a new album, Make This Your Own, out in January; read up on one of Britain's best bands here...
Y'know, when we speak to new-ish bands about new-er things...
DiS caught up with the 25,000-selling Aussie rockers before the release of their acclaimed self-titled album.
The best Casio-grind band in the country? The only one? Whatever - their latest LP, Lips, is amazing. Check them, and it...
Bat For Lashes
Brighton belle Natasha Khan has had a grand 2006 as Bat For Lashes; her debut, Fur And Gold, made the shortlist of our albums of the year. We grabbed ten with her in a London basement bar...
They're from New Zealand! They sound like bands we like! A bit! We'll probably write loads more about them next year! Probably...
So Hot Pretty Soon outfit The KBC are expected to go mega in 2007; click here and read about them before Jo Whiley does...
And if these guys aren't, like, good in 2007, we'll eat all the hats we've ever owned. Seriously? Nah... we'd puke like sick cats...
The silly ones, about haircuts...
Cradle of Filth
Flesh! Booze! Drugs! Nail varnish! Are these guys for real? Legends, you say? What a world we live in...
Even in hindsight, we still can't tell if Louisville punks Young Widows hate us or not...
Don't drown her, really. She'd hate it. Plus, she's not a witch. We think...
The rocking-est band to emerge from Finland in 2006, our Raz has taken a mighty shine to these boys. Let's hope that he doesn't go too far. Again...
They released DiS's fourth-best album of 2006 - again, as voted for by the readers - and at least one of them likes porn...
Emo-rockers, they seem to like White Russians. Does that make them racist? No! It's a drink, silly...
