It’s that time of Summer again where those of us who don’t pile on the streets of Notting Hill to dance and sing, migrate to fields at the Rivermead Leisure Centre and Bramham Park to hang out with black-topped rock-kids and a lot of drunken fools (some of which include members of team DiS). With our Wellington boots secured and waiting in our tents and a hefty schedule of music to be sarcastic about, we head on out and soak up the sun, beer and bands at The Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds.Main Stage |

Unless of course you are going into it with a chip on your shoulder. I wrote it that way for the simple fact that the Notting Hill carnival has lost its direction of late and seems to be shying away from multiculturalism and exchanges of culture, into a celebration of Jamaica. That's all.

Well I'm siding with Patricide. Was a lazy turn of phrase, I just wish I was more surprised, not least at others' inability to see this...
Incidently I saw a shitload of flags (of countries caribbean, african & more) this monday just past, from Royal Oak to Notting Hill to Bayswater, and I don't recall especially noticing any Jamaican ones. But hey...

Sorry Crablin but look at the pats on the back you're getting and where they come from or rather who.
It reads in a resentment slant and from some point of ignorance. If you as a journalist cannot adequately get the point you meant across perhaps you should have left that little gem out.
Killykill's testament below suggests its still a multi cultural affair in fact more so than the carnivals in Leeds and Manchester.
I'm just telling you how that sentence can be misconstrued and that it is a fact that this site allows certain views to go unchecked apart from LIMEY. That's a terrible insult, she had to go.

Not meaning to be a pedantic fool, but wasn't the Nottinghill carnival started by the Jamaican people who came to live here in the *gets decade wrong probably* fifties? So isn't kinda a Jamaican type festival thing anyways...will shut up now as this isn't important.

FWIW, I went both days and as far as I could tell it was basically soca (which I would associate with Trinidad, maybe wrongly) on the floats. There was lots more reggae & dancehall on the static sound systems but then I saw grime, 2-step, drum and bass, house, breaks, disco, hip hop, salsa and reggaeton on those as well.

I read crablins comment and thought it was a joke and found it quite funny, only to read crablins reply about 'carnival losing its direction' and thought crablin has the real problem, smacks of ignorance. The BBC peddle rubbish about the multicultural carnival. Its a celebration of carribean culture with a bit of house & hip hop thrown in. Really good fun, too many idiot trouble makers.

The Killers were, even for people who don't like The Killers I should imagine, absolutely brilliant. Brandon really is a proper showman.
We Are Scientists are the best new band at the moment not to have come out of London, and I love the new London bands.

Killers were great- got the best slot, glittery Killers made everything look great- probably the best singalong festival tunes.
