First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

World exclusive first ever, ever, EVER Drowned in Sound playlist compilation for you to download.

A little while ago we teamed up with the good folks at the world's top independent digital download store, KarmaDownload, and after a few teething problems (read also: waiting for new version of DiS to launch in July!) we're very excited to announce our first compilation-come-playlist selector of the best music of the month of May 2005!

Our aim is simple: to do what we do with the site and rummage around to find you the very best new music. The idea is each one is an overview of the month's best new releases and new bands. We hope you like it. We hope to build from this and offer some more exclusive type stuff on future playlists hand-compiled by us pesky DiS kidz.

For our first attempt, we've got odd pop shapes from Spoon, the joyous sound of the return of Brighton's daydream ensemble Electrelane, notorious new London band Dustins Bar Mitzvah, much talked about Lutonians Battle with their sold out Fierce Panda debut single and the summerier than a 99 The National. All of that hand crafted stuff can be yours, all legally with a fair share of the monies going to the artists, for just £4.45.

Tracklisting is as follows:

1. SPOON I Turn My Camera On
2. ELECTRELANE Bells
3. DUSTIN'S BAR MITZVAH Lucy
4. BATTLE Isabelle
5. THE NATIONAL Abel

Get it online now from drownedinsound.com/mp3shop.

DiScuss: What do you think? Find anything new that you've not heard before and love? Is DiS another rubbish part of the corporate machine trying to screw you? Do you legally download? What do you want next time?

First ever DrownedinSound download compilation

it's nowhere near as good as their old stuff.

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Spoon? Electrelane? Cool!
Dunno bout the others, Battle's would be cool.

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

*Makes a raspberry farting sound*

put some Mystery Meat (Kiss All My Lurid Elements) on it! Next, i propose DiS make an 'all-out-balls ROCK' compo to salute with a texan horn jestures and nose bleeds......?

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Just £4.45? I can buy an record in Fopp for 55p more. Or one of the Rough Trade compilations they have on sale which has 30-odd tracks and ACTUALLY EXISTS.

Ah well, good to see new bands being promoted and stuff, I just can't comprehend legal downloading.

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Given my preference for all things shiny and round i wont be buying this as cash is short right now and i prefer to get something physical for my money rather than a download that might disappear if my hard disk dies...

However i think that the principle is a really good idea and if you ever released a drowned in sound cd sampler i'd buy it like a shot, as some of my favourite bands were discovered on label samplers.

So yeah, good idea, but personally i'd prefer to see a cd at some point...

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

We're planning a CD compilation to coincide with our 5th Birthday in October. Watch DiS space.

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilati

Thats good news, i look forward to it...

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

"Watch DiS space"

!!
genius. i spy a marketing slogan! now the corporate machine rumours will really start chugging in the...umm...rumour machine.

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Spoon? The National? Electrelane? I thought it was Playlouder in bed with Beggars?

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Though it's always good to give some kind of promotion bands, do you really expect people to spend almost a fiver on 4 mp3s which could be quite easily downloaded for free?

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilati

5 mp3s, obviously.

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

omg, this is such a fucking conspiracy!!

i have used more exclamation marks today than any other day, ever!!

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

One would hope DiS readers are mature enough to realise that bands probably want to get paid for their music...

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Bah! I thought it was gonna be free downloads!
Why don't more bands give out free mp3s? It makes sense. If theyre song is good enough, the people who download it are gonna come back for more and be willing to pay for it.

That National song is great though.

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

We were only hosting the, gawd!

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Spoon are on Matador for starters.
Plus when it comes to independent music, Beggars do have a monopoly because not only do they sign the best stuff but they're also one of the most 'on it' labels when it comes to making their catalogue available to download.

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

but was it necessary to host it under 'secret'?

the plot thickens...

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

I'll be up for a real cd compilation! I'm not happy about music I can't hold in my hand though, there's no way I'd pay for downloads.

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

Isn't Matador owned by Beggars? :P

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

battle...come from Luton

blimey

xx

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

yeh i only found it accidently, was on another site which had a battle song on it then right clicked to see the location so i could paste the link and give it to someone else.
all of those battle songs are good, if you go back a few pages from there, there's some free martha songs as well :)

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

£4.45 for five tracks?

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

I'd pay a fiver just for 'Lucy' by Dustin's

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilati

then you have some problems you need to assess. ;)

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilati

are you their manager? you always seem to appear whenever they're mentioned..

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

I refrained from mentioning previously that Isabelle isn't exactly Battle's best song. I know that's all personal opinion, and that the band probably want that song releasing or something or other. But it's not all that good. Tendency is their best song i've heard to date. Going to see Supersystem tonight.

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

When i said battles i meant the other band, not battle, but BATTLES, they are ace.

clarified:-P

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

I bought the Battle track as a single. Can't wait for the album. I got to agree with the people who are saying they prefer cds, cds sound good.

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

dear sean, what would it take to get one of my band's (The Chorus) tracks on that CD? www.thechorus.co.uk

First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

how come u got donny osmond in the pic? lol

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

But maybe DiS are paying them too much. I mean the £5 you pay for a Rough Trade compilation gets split between the 20-odd bands on the CD, plus obviously the indie-capitalists who run the label itself. So DiS are being too generous either to the bands or, ahem, to themselves.

Re: First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation

i think it's basically just through karmadownload - the mp3 company who works with dis - and they charge 79p or whatever it is per mp3. multiply by 5 (for 5 songs) and you have the cost of the ep.

there's the whole thing about mp3s being too expensive anyway. you're paying the same, if not more, for less product, no artwork, no crystal case, no distributors, etc. mp3s SHOULD be 10p a track cos there are no overheads for the record label.
