First ever Drowned in Sound download compilation
A little while ago we teamed up with the good folks at the world's top independent digital download store, KarmaDownload, and after a few teething problems (read also: waiting for new version of DiS to launch in July!) we're very excited to announce our first compilation-come-playlist selector of the best music of the month of May 2005!
Our aim is simple: to do what we do with the site and rummage around to find you the very best new music. The idea is each one is an overview of the month's best new releases and new bands. We hope you like it. We hope to build from this and offer some more exclusive type stuff on future playlists hand-compiled by us pesky DiS kidz.
For our first attempt, we've got odd pop shapes from Spoon, the joyous sound of the return of Brighton's daydream ensemble Electrelane, notorious new London band Dustins Bar Mitzvah, much talked about Lutonians Battle with their sold out Fierce Panda debut single and the summerier than a 99 The National. All of that hand crafted stuff can be yours, all legally with a fair share of the monies going to the artists, for just £4.45.
Tracklisting is as follows:
1. SPOON I Turn My Camera On
2. ELECTRELANE Bells
3. DUSTIN'S BAR MITZVAH Lucy
4. BATTLE Isabelle
5. THE NATIONAL Abel

DiScuss: What do you think? Find anything new that you've not heard before and love? Is DiS another rubbish part of the corporate machine trying to screw you? Do you legally download? What do you want next time?

put some Mystery Meat (Kiss All My Lurid Elements) on it! Next, i propose DiS make an 'all-out-balls ROCK' compo to salute with a texan horn jestures and nose bleeds......?

Ah well, good to see new bands being promoted and stuff, I just can't comprehend legal downloading.

However i think that the principle is a really good idea and if you ever released a drowned in sound cd sampler i'd buy it like a shot, as some of my favourite bands were discovered on label samplers.
So yeah, good idea, but personally i'd prefer to see a cd at some point...

Why don't more bands give out free mp3s? It makes sense. If theyre song is good enough, the people who download it are gonna come back for more and be willing to pay for it.
That National song is great though.

Plus when it comes to independent music, Beggars do have a monopoly because not only do they sign the best stuff but they're also one of the most 'on it' labels when it comes to making their catalogue available to download.

there's the whole thing about mp3s being too expensive anyway. you're paying the same, if not more, for less product, no artwork, no crystal case, no distributors, etc. mp3s SHOULD be 10p a track cos there are no overheads for the record label.
