The Tuesday DiScussion: DiScuss DiS!
It’s as-it-says-on-the-tin simple: this week, we want you to DiScuss us. We want your opinions on areas of the site that could be modified, or tweaked, or completely overhauled. We want to know what draws you to the site – perhaps a couple of times a week, maybe once a month, possibly every single day – and what keeps you here. We want information, spoon fed on silver cutlery. We need it in order to develop, to progress, to evolve. As that’s precisely what you see whenever you log onto DiS: evolution in effect. The last six years have seen dozens of changes, the comings and goings of features and facilities; we’re far from the perfect beast just yet.
DrownedinSound.com only really exists because of its readers – we’re only here, at our desks from sun up to sun down, because of you. Yes, that sounds fairly ‘heard it all before’, but really: DiS is as much yours as it is ours. The site’s interactivity is perfect evidence of this. We do value your thoughts and opinions. So give them to us.
Reviews are a vital component of the site’s make-up, but could their presentation be improved? Are you drawn to the lead review in each section – live, singles and albums – only, or do the lists beneath each lead review image also attract your cursor? Do you think that redesigning the front page to accommodate lead-in paragraphs for each album, or each review that we choose to feature, would make you more likely to read the whole piece? Would the front page look better with fewer reviews on it? Would you click through another page, or two, to read reviews of what’s out this week?
Speaking about the front page in slightly broader terms, do you feel it’s a little too busy? Would you like to see it simplified, perhaps prioritising images over text? Would a contents table, where the daily lead feature currently resides, be beneficial? Are there certain features that you’d like to see highlighted a little better, such as interviews? Is our current approach, of using differently styled images in the lead feature box for each new article, an appreciated one, or should the front page always look near enough the same?
News is another key part of DiS. Do you think we cover enough stories, and that there’s enough diversity across the acts we report on? Do you appreciate articles highlighting smaller bands’ tours, or would you rather read our take on the latest Pete Doherty or Michael Jackson nonsense? Is there a balance of the amusing but trivial and the serious and genuinely interesting? Do the stories need to be listed as you see them on the front page now, or would you click through to another page to see the latest headlines?
So far as interactivity goes – the features available to users – what could be improved upon? Are there any additional options for messaging that you’d like to see implemented? Are the gig listings – and release listings – easy to follow, and are we noting enough upcoming events and records? Are you aware of the gig calendar facility, and have you been using it?
Are user reviews a good or bad idea? Have you written any? Do you find this feature a way of gaining a valuable second opinion on a record or gig, or is it too easy for a particular band’s fans to take advantage of the facility, thus generating a series of 10/10 ratings for their mates?
Really, guys and girls, feedback. That’s what we want. Below, a slew of comments criticising the site and kissing it tenderly, slicing off its many ears and tickling its underarms, please. That’d be super-swell fantastic. The writer of the best comment we read below, we’ll send them some stuff. I have lots of stuff on my desk – records, post-it notes with scribbles on them, poorly-drawn pictures of pints of ale, a mug with cold tea in it, badges, stickers, more records. Yeah, stuff.
And, go…
Better listings
or just any at all for Bristol
My two cents
More options on band profiles? Like the fans can vote for favourite songs or leave comments or recommendations for people who want to get into that band/musician.
An option to go through gigs a month at a time, going through week by week can take its time.
An option for users to create new band profiles- this COULD be open to abuse admittedly but could help with more local bands, etc etc.
I prefered
the old blue sites front page that had the album/singles/live review horizontally on the front page so you could see all of whats new at a glance (yes I am too lazy to scroll down) now I just head straight to the your site link and miss stuff. Also what happened to the book and film reviews? and I liked blank subjects but I guess you cant have them for the last 10 posts profile bit.
Some way
to hide/collapse the messages that were there last time I looked on the boards/comments.
Slash/slash.
like this
http://web.archive.org/web/20050127152633/http://drownedinsound.com/
just seemed more drawn to the content when it was like that
The calendar would be greatly improved
If you could add your own events too. Often there are events overlooked, or only certain tour dates mentioned.
what moribund says
the listings section is pretty useless for finding what's coming up in Bristol and probably a lot of other cities.
Best thing...
...about the site: the discussion aspect. This discussion an example, but mainly the discussion boards, that's what keeps me coming back every day.
Also, I think that the quick turn-overs of singles/albums/live reviews is excellent; the scope too is pretty reasonable, although obviously the more the merrier, as with any review site I guess.
The lists of reviews attracts me well enough; i'd rather see a longer list than a short list that had pictures.
The length of reviews is excellent, and many of the reviews are excellent.
But perhaps my one criticism would be that there are not enough people writing the reviews, most seem to be by the same people.
I don't know if this is because of a lack of quality reviewers, a lack of people willing to review, or a general un-willingness to get newies in 'just in case', but there you go.
The news aspect of the site is good, although perhaps a tad behind other newsy sites, NME.com for example, but then again, I guess that's always gonna be the way. Pretty good variety also, maybe not enough scoops dammit.
General lack of bias is good, lots of positives for lots of different types of music.
And the interactive link element within the site, I like a lot. For example, the information on labels/cities/venues, an excellent example of attention to detail indeed.
I personally have not written or read any user reviews, perhaps the little voice in my head is going "but surely it will be of a lower standard than the actual review", which is dumb, because there is every chance that user reviews could be of a high standard indeed, so a good feature of the site yes. Do you, DrownedinSound chieftains, browse user reviews looking for new talent?!
In general, I'm not gonna lie, I rate www.drownedinsound.com. Good people, young and old, good variety of music, good level of humour, bloody good profile contributors...
yep, we browse user reviews...
...all the time!
i can think of
only a couple of things i'd change:
1) make it more clear that user reviews are user reviews. but have more of them.
2) show the star rating in the title so if we're just looking for a good album to check out (or a bad review for our entertainment) we can get there faster
3) more demo/unsigned/small indie label stuff
i *really like* the way comments are posted under the article. in tree format as opposed to a straight list. don't change that.
here, here
bring back demo reviews - appreciate they take time and content away from "proper" reviews, and you must receive 9 cack demos for every 1 thats good, but I discovered some good stuff through the old demo reviews
weezer_indie_bloke said something similar
But it might be an idea to implement some kind of wikipedia dealio, mainly with the band profiles. Basically, people should be able to submit a profile for a band that isn't already covered
I'm not suggesting that it work this simply, but perhaps any submitted profile would have to be OK'd by you guys? And if none of you have any idea whether the submitted profile is accurate, surely it can't be too difficult to run it by the band/label in question? A simple template email should do that
I know that I'd definately submit some profiles if it were possible. And imagine the breadth of music and genre covered if EVERYBODY could get involved in this way? It would also give you guys some fresh ideas (not that you need them - but who doesn't want to find out more about music?) on what you might like to cover in the future, as you could see how users are rating a new band, and so on and so forth
So erm, yeah
Glad to hear...
...it Mr. Mike_Diver!
.
I also browse metacritic a lot as I find it hard to trust the opinion of one critic, no matter what I think of the general quality of their reviews. Its also just interesting, I think, to see what magazines love/hate a big album. Maybe a little section on big reviews with a few soundbites/scores from your major rivals.
Tbh
I'm not sure it's worth it, if you have metacritic already, why bother?
Global Dis
LISTINGS
Drowned in sound aims to be a global music site as it takes in music from all round the world. However, there are not listings for those people who live on the other side of the pond. I do not think it would take much to rope an american/canadian/mexican in on updating gig listings in their local borough. If a New Yorker got involved, then like london, there would be a shit load of gigs in the listings section for that area. This would then expand the stragnlehold that DIS could have over the internet music based community.
MUSIC PLAYERS
We all hear that you all know bands, so I don't think they would mind giving you or liscencing their songs to put in a music player that sits on the website. This could add interactivity to the site as userse could vote on songs to be put up for the next week.
BAND PROFILES
Dont go down the myspace route as it is lame, i think the band profiles at the moment or great as they are short but sweet. Giving you everything that you need to know about a band. However, additions to this could be a user upload, where users can upload their bands, maybe for a small price so they can be included in the growing list of bands that inhabit the DIS database.
FORUMS
The forums have a life of their own, and it is they that bring the most users back to the website. Nothing to say here as I think the forums are one of the best on the web
Hope this has been helpful to mike/colin/matt etc.
I had a big think about this so i hope the above thoughts were helpful.
Oh actually
Perhaps some writers on dance and hip hop? It's a bit under-represented.
^ true say
more techno/house/electro/electronica/breaks would be interesting, but kind of diverting from the indieness a bit
Make it easier to find new music
Maybe have a featured new band every week, or something along those lines. Currently, I'm reading every review of bands I haven't heard of, in the hope of finding the jem.
It wouldn't even have to be that much
I love DiS's indieness.
I'd Support Making Gig Listings Into A Wiki-Type Format
With hundreds of contributing DiSers I presume ready to contribute and regularly update and many such as me very willing to update listings for our home town/areas, I think it would work. Sabotage is always the danger but to be honest a) who would sabotage gig listings? b) the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Maybe also some sort of news ticker of very new news? With clickable links like the BBC News front page?
It would improve "capacity" i.e. how many stories you could fit on the front page for a start, just a thought.
I also LOVE the listings feature.
really, I think its great!
I second the opinion just up there ^^ about representation of other genres aside from indie, too.
agreed
so, let's say better listings and demo reviews
I second...
...adman2001 about getting a music player, that would be AWESOME. Surely you could play stuff from DrownedinSound Recordings?
Also, perhaps more available downloads/videos would be grand.
Don't change
anything. Love the humour, love the lack of arse licking, love the reviews.
Gimmie some audio previews of new singles though.
OK ermm.
The best part of the site is discussion and user contribution. People like the idea of being able to "make a difference".
I like this site over other sites because if I go to somewhere like say...pitchfork and they review and album I really like and basically say: "It's shit", then there's nothing I can do about that.
However on this site I can comment the review, saying why I disagree, or I can write my own, and give my own rating, and I can rate the band myself.
It's good to know that, say for example Raz has reviewed the latest Bronx single and says it's a bit boring, 4/10 etc, that I've commented it saying how I think it's actually one of their best tracks. This makes a difference I think. People DO read the review comments. If someone was reading that review thinking "Meh I like them, dont think I'll bother with this one then..." and then see my comment and decide otherwise, then it could make the difference of them finding new albums/bands/tracks they love, or not.
To expand on this I think that there should be an "average user rating" for whatever is being reviewed. It's all about people being able to give their feedback and "make a difference", the interactivity. I know we can rate bands, but what if I think a band are ace and then all of a sudden release some shit song? Or have 2 albums out, one ace one 10/10 and one crap one 1/10? That doesn't mean I think the band are somewhere inbetween as a 5/10 then...
Maybe for the news their should be like a "small news" that doesn't really fit in with the main news. Maybe from sources such as band websites or myspace bulletins or whatnot. Like if a band has said "we're going to start recording the new album next week". Or "our new record is out on **/**/**".
Also for reviews, why not have a featured user review every day/week or something? This might even encourage people to write reviews or better quality reviews (definitely not mine then :P)
And for music direction, to be honest I wouldn't really like to see more hip hop and stuff reviewed....
I'm aware of the listings and gig calendar, but to be honest there's never ever any listings for my area (Stoke-on-trent) even though we're getting more and more bands playing around here. To be honest it wouldnt be that difficult to keep updated, there's only about two venues which the "main bands" play at here. Obviously there's a lot more venues than that but even if you just got the listings for "The Sugarmill" ( http://www.thesugarmill.co.uk/gigguide.php )
or "The Underground" then there would be a lot more to go by for people visiting the site.
Finally, as for the main/home page, I like how it's set out now. The news on the right hand side, a "main article" at the top, and the single, album, and live reviews along the middle. However my screen resolution is 1280x1024 and there is a lot of wasted space on the right hand side. Don't know if something can be done about that?
Ermmm yeah :) I think that's it? Great site, I love it :) It's literally changed a lot of aspects of my life. Maybe even changed my life. I listen to different music, better music than I did before. So I'm happier :) I go to different gigs, more gigs, meet more people... Basically it's just a bit ace!
I hope that reads ok.
It's getting late...
click throughs
i generally prefer not to have to click through to another page unless i have to.
Sometimes a line or 2 under an album review would be helpful when it comes to the many bands i've never heard of, saves skimming through the ones of no interest. I appreciate that these are probably bloody irritating to write though.
I hate your logo at the top of the page, can't exactly remember what the old one looked like but it was certainly better.
Apart from that it's great, well written (the most important aspect) and generally entertaining
we did advertise for hip-hop/dance contributors a while ago
didn't we? obviously no takers.
forum
also a search function on the forum would be useful (unless i've just missed it?)
and
an edit function for comments, hence this post
more raz
pretty much.
i love DiS
loved it when i was a reader, still love it now i'm writing.. but its disappointing that people think the listings stuff needs improving, because i spend so much damn time listing stuff, at least an hour a day. i try and list whatever comes my way for the South East, and i thought it was going well.
editing posts would be EXCELLENT.
perhaps what would be good instead of reinstating demo reviews would be a demo roundup, of the stuff worth checking out, rather than individual 'proper' reviews.
no idea squashing
mister rauf..
I want to see more hiphop and dance
more news on this may be forthcoming.
I think DiS is still too indie/rock-centered (although in saying this I tend to piss off Colin and Mike rather... it is getting gradually more diverse)
Direct links to sound files needed
If the reviewers could provide a direct link to the tunes in question (myspace, band site, label site, etc) right at the top of the review, that would really help. There's nothing quite like listening to the music while reading the review.
Beyond that, the site is magnificent and is at the top of my favorites list, even ahead of the 'fork and the mighty Tiny Mix Tapes and Cokemachine Glow. This feedback feature is a big reason why. The great writing is the other.
yr biggest fan in mid-Willamette Oregon,
RstJ
I definitely agree with
Jolley, on the following points:
1)having "average user ratings" for reviews
2)featured user reviews every day/week
As for listings, i agree with whoever said we should be able to add our own listings. The event calender would be a lot more helpful if i could actually add half the things i was going to.
Aside from that though, i really enjoy visiting the site. Lovely, informative and interesting people, some good reviews and reccomendations and a nice layout.
I think
drawing special attention to the single/album/live act of the day/week/month would be a good idea. Other than that I can't think of anything that would really improve the site. Without sounding too sycophantic, it's hard to make something already so good better.
Hum
Homepage,
- I'd probably like to see the ratings for the singles, albums, as icons next to the link to see whats worth reading before clicking through to the articles.
Event Listings
- A more complex event search, being about to select ranges, maybe with a visual calendar to select by month.
- show only dis picks
Forums
- Icons to describe the category, maybe in music forum for gig, album, mypsace plug, promoter, etc.
- Subcategories.
- Replies not needing a title.
Profile Page
- Favourite Venues
- last.fm weekly charts.
i'll third that
more demos, more small releases, maybe the film/book reviews as well.
Apart from that, I'd say that the quality of the reviews, particularly some of the singles, is a little hit-and-miss. Granted, I could read Divers and crablins rantings for hours at work and feel no guilt whatsoever, but I couldn't say the same for some of the smaller reviews. Which is a shame, because it's often these records which are the real hidden gems.
listings...well, as a londoner we don't get a bad deal at all, but having lived in exeter and oxford as well, I can appreciate the need for listings that cover many more cities equally, especially those with thriving scenes.
In that respect, how about having partnerships/information exchanges with other regional sites? Maybe have Scene Reports a la Maximum Rock n Roll, focusing on a different town once in while, the good bands coming out of there, local venues where bands trying to book tours could play?
Essentially, whilst I love the information service you kids give in regards to records, maybe giving the same attention to live music, scenes, venues and small bands would turn this site into a much larger and more active community.
I like it all
I should have a column as I like writing? that last sentence passes as my CV?
get a better
title bar design. the speakers and photoshop grass annoys me. maybe when a record is released two people could reviewit sepratly..and so you get two different viewpoints and scores.
calendar feature
desn't work for all the gigs you list, i started trying to use it, but then gave up because i still needed a seperate list elsewhere to cover the stuff that's not on DiS and the stuff that's in the DiS news but not with the calendar function (ie Cursive was, but Planes wasn't).
Generally speaking though - DiS is bonza.
oh, and more DiS radio - i especially enjoyed the folk show and the rock show, so maybe more genre/theme shows...
you could add
a stream player for artists that are on DIS, i'd defo go on DIS in school a lot more, also my screen name is utter shite, wouldn't mind some way to change it without just makking a new profile-i can't be bothered ratting all the music AGAIN, gah!
i'd say
we get about 200 cack demos for every good one.
i agree
Global listings is something I think is really key. We will be trying to expand the site away from being UK-centric as obviously we live in a global age and it's becoming increasingly clear that the music we're writing about isn't just reserved to the UK.
RE: Music players - this is the aim of our podcast.
it's a chicken and egg situation
and has been like since we started.
yak yak
News: Maybe slightly more stories? I enjoy the diversity of the stories posted (across all genre's etc) but sometimes things can go a little quiet on that front...
Listings: More! For some reason London isn't respresented as well as it could on the site. Maybe aim for something as comprehensive as ents24? In terms of general listings across 'our genres' if that makes sense. EG, wouldn't expect to see Panic! or Kylie tours listed, just more for bands in our pigeon holes.
Forums: Make them prettier. Give the profiles more options. Myspace links, messenger links, more interactive.
To an extent though, the site aint really broke, so it doesn't need much fixing.
i think "indie-centric" is unfair
looking at the album reviews quickly, there's Hatebreed, Dr. Octagon, The Thermals, Slayer, Mountain Goats etc. it's not the NME.
and in regards to hip-hop, i'd argue there's really not much around that's exciting. not that that should deny it reviews, but when the most interesting thing I can think of is a Stones Throw retrospective compilation, it's dire.
twin reviews...
...users can add user reviews, i.e. a second opinion, to any release we cover.
And a great deal that we don't!
why shouldn't i be listed?
the public should know where i am at all times.
...
Some minor technical issues mainly concerning the forum:
1) The awkward sharing of links is an annoyance. Sometimes they come up correctly, sometimes they don't, leading users to either have to cut'n'paste manually or...
2) Users with certain web browsers find that trying to manually select those links that don't appear correctly - and indeed any kind of text - cannot do so because every object on the page ends up being selected.
3) The ability to edit posts would be useful.
4) While I appreciate a partial reason for the particular style of the forums and comments system might be the aesthetics, to me they are in fact confusing and unintuitive.
5) Times New Roman is a horrible font. Sort it out.
6) I've noticed fans of bands artificially affecting ratings as well - how else to explain Inme's average rating of 7/10? Solution: Maybe set restrictions on what class of user may add ratings based on the length of time registered to the site or number of posts made? Everyone should be allowed to leave reviews though, that's all good.
7) And Finally: Colin Roberts has a very choleric temper. While it may be a liability on more commercially-minded website for editors to occasionally drop in to chew out random samples of the demographic, on this site it is a great mixture of terror and humour. In short: a boon. Might I suggest a regular feature: "Crablin Mauls..."
Everything else is fine. Keep it up.
i think the correct rate for finding a good demo is
a gazillion to 1
well
the listings could be better, not living in London I'm yet to find anything that interests me. User submission of events should be the number 1 priority for any new website coding.
I get the feeling you could have more news if you had more people writing it, obviously you've got to keep it well written, relevent and interesting but more please it's one of the main reasons I visit the site.
I don't read the reviews very much but this could be because I'm a bit lazy but also might be because the frontpage is a bit busy. I'm not really sure if images would help but maybe just one list (rather than 3) the current lists on the frontpage are too long and the items stay on the frontpage for a long period of time. Make it more like the news page.
user submission of listings
...is a must i reckon.
And also links should open in a new window, rather than re-directing the current page!
.
Allow people to add their own listings and gigs to the site, immediately it becomes a national listings service instead of London and a few token places.
Comments board
Why was it removed? (Sorry if this has been explained countless times). I used to go there as often as the music and social forums and it was always really active. Having it back would be great!
more demo reviews...
Not wanting to sound like an arse, but people are asking for more new/indie/demo reviews quite a lot, yet when stuff that fits that bill does get reviewed there are perhaps 3, 4 or maybe, if you're lucky, 7 comments made on the record.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the DiS staff saw that such reviews created a wealth of interest (as in, lets say, a story about beyonce fucking knowles wearing fur), then maybe they would be more inclined to include more stuff of that nature....no/yes/what?
it's still alive
found at the bottom of the reviews page
http://www.drownedinsound.com/reviews/board
so
write about the good one? you know, support the GOOD unsigned bands and ignore the rest?
the problem with
having "average user ratings" for reviews is that in the age of street teaming, the place just gets flooded. like back when the ordinary boys had an average rating of 9/10 - that literally could not have been "honest", or whatever. it's a nice idea but yeah there's too many bastards in the world.
Well.
I didn't know about that! Since the site was redesigned...
My Ideas:
The Wiki (restricted to signed in members / members you have been signed up for more than a month say) sound like a great idea for listings. E.g. whenever I see a bands tourdates announced / dates from myspace just copy and paste them. If it's easy to report abuse it could be a great facility.
News: Perhaps some way that people can suggest story so that the community can feel a bit more part it. The coverage really good apart from that.
Forums: A dedicated section for New Bands people have found recently - as was up for a few days this summer. Also a dedicated DIStalk board - for any suggestions about the site generally.
Podcast: Excellent.
Oh and some mp3s too please.
Thanks
I don't understand why it needs to be separate from the other boards though. If people could find the comments board more easily, wouldn't the reviews get a lot more readers and discussion? Just seems a shame to have it tucked away like that.
In an ideal world
a stand alone DiS player of music, similar to Pandora/hypemachine/last fm - linked to reviews. So while reading a single review you could listen to the single.
I think they can be made so you can't grab the mp3s and run. But I appreciate it probably would be very difficult to do but I am sure it would be AMAZING!
Too Selective
i find it very strange how there is not much cross promotion between dis records and the site.
I think the band profiles secion is far too selective, for example, i played a gig for you guys with Jeniferever in feb this year @ Rota. Since then i have signed a contract with DIS records to be on the b-side of the Jeniferever single 'The Sound Of Beating Wings' yet if you type my name into the 'Find An Artist' field box you get nothing at all. thats obviously very frustrating when your an artist who is supposed to have some kind of affilation with Drowned in Sound.
I mean, i know acoustic music may not be classed as 'cool' or 'hip' but i'm still trying to get somewhere.
Why put me on at one of your gigs or ask me to sign a contract to be on a b-side if you arent going to tell anyone about it or at least give someone an idea of who i am?
I would have thought it would be logical in general for DIS records to use this site as an anchor to promote its releases instead of allowing whoever sontrols it to talk simply about whay THEY think everyone else wants to hear.
I think thats fair.
Paul M
Ok, it's not Tuesday, but....
The main thing that gets my goat is the fact that (like several other DiScussers) I can never find the events that I am going to on the gig listings.
The calendar tends to be a little bit London-centric in my experience (brilliant when I'm in Camb, but not so great when I'm home in Newcastle), and it would be great to have a wider spread. Or even have the option to let people add their own events in their local area (with suitable vetting).
cross promotion
i rather like the fact that DiSrecords is not heavily promoted here, it rather adds to the credibilty of the whole thing
demo reviews...
i agree about demo reviews...
with unsigned bands recording stuff themselves and selling songs online or offering songs for download online it is a great way for people to find new crap and feed their music addiction/ipod...
and i say that not just because i am in a band! i love music and like finding stuff that DIY or just cool bands put out themselves without being on a label or corporate wankers etc etc...
rawk on!
Paul
If you wanted a band profile just ask. I just dont think anyone's going to discover you just because you have a profile on our site. I am sorry you dont have a profile but I think there a better ways of asking than leaving a shitty comment on a public forum. We are a very small team and very over stretched and us realising you don't have a profile on our site is not likely to be something we'll think about. However if you ask nicely and send us a biog and a picture, we'll put something up. It's that simple.
Also, I think it's very important that the label is extremely seperate from the site as editorial should never be biassed by commerce. We'll never review any records we release, the fact we're releasing them is, I hope, a statement that we believe they're the good and worth us investing our time and money in.
It is frustrating to think we're sat here with 125k people reading the site every week and we just wanna pour the gooey honeyed sunshine of Jeniferever into everyone's ears but it isn't for cus to dictate when we have a financial vested interest in people buying the record. However I dont think people will listen to us if that's how we roll.

A front page
overhaul sounds like a good idea.
It's be great to have a little summary of each review - because, otherwise, if it's a band you don't know, you're not hugely likely to click it.
Also, the archive-type pages should be easier to browse/prettier. They're not the best looking things in the world.
As other people have said, reviews are a good length and largely very very well-written and a joy to read, striking a nice balance between being intelligent and interesting and not being overly 'flowery'.
I also like the idea of releasing a set amount of reviews a day, so there's always a certain amount of daily content to look at.
I like how Tuesday's have become discussion days, and it'd perhaps be nice to see more regular features.
Maybe more regular on-going types of feature as well - this would perhaps help with the diversity issue, if there was a weekly/fortnightly electronica article, or a regular folk, grime, pop, whatever feature. That way you can have someone with a lot of knowledge giving a regular contribution that spans more than just an occasional album review.
Interesting features and really good writing are more of a lure than a huge quantity of shorter single reviews. Actually, single reviews are rubbish anyways. Stick to albums, and smaller bands singles/eps.
Oh!
And getting more actual media content, exclusives or not, would be pretty ace - as I'm sure that's something you could figure out with a lot of bands/labels, in some kind of mutually beneficial way.
This is on the roadmap
Problem being how do we deal with conflicting or innacurate listings from different people, given that we need accurate listings for our own purposes as they tie in with our event reviews, venue profiles etc.
Get a browser with tabs
Once you have tabs, you'll start to find stuff opening in new windows quite annoying, when you would prefer just to ctrl-click (or apple-click) and have it open in a new tab.
That is why I don't set lots of target="_blank" myself.
It's also deprecated by the W3C
The links thing
is a ruby on rails bug. Will probably be fixed when they bring out a new version.
Editing posts isn't going to happen, as I don't like the possibility of people playing games and rewriting history to make it look like they said something else.
We don't use Times New Roman.
i agree, it is a little too indie / rock oriented
i would like to see hip hop, dance, dub, reggae etc represented a little more.
oh, and if possible try and get rid of some of the utter twats that plague the site.
more brainlove too....
would you
like to come listen to 200 demos a week for us then? there is only colin, matt and mike working on the site full time and if i had time to listen to demos as well as running a label and furthering the whole dis empire i'd be some kinda time magician.
an audio/video blog
is on the roadmap.
you forgot to mention
world music and songs in arabic.
i'd happily help
seriously.
Or, just click with
the scroll wheel on your mouse :P
nah, give the arabic a miss
there's not enough demand.
don't get me wrong, it is a great website- one that my company (unwittingly) pays me to visit about a dozen times a day. i just feel that if i had to make a criticism it would be that the music genres are slightly restricted. maybe i shouldnt have typed etc, just left it at dance, hiphop, dub.
Inspectah
Deck!
Thanks Sean
That wasn't meant to come across as 'shitty' so im sorry if it did. I just read back over my message and yes it did look a little harsh so i didnt mean to piss you off!
I guess that due to the fact that this was a descussion about what could be improved upon etc. that was the only negative thing i could think of.
As for the profile, it wasnt that big of a deal, and i thought that it was you guys who added the profiles etc. So thats my mistake.
I guess it boils down to this.
When your an acoustic guy you sometimes get this horrible 'why wont people take me seriously?' bug. Some reviews ive had lately have started with lines like 'my god, its another singer songwriter!' and things like that, and it makes me think, when they review the arctic monkeys for example, why dont they say 'my god, its another band!' ha ha.
So therefore, when i didnt realise i had to submit a profile, i was worried i had kinda been swept under the mat as nothing interesting. Hope that makes sense.
That kinda linked to the cross promotion thing. And i 100% see what you mean.
I didnt mean that you should review or drive your releases down peoples throats, but i dont see the harm in one headline once in a while or a forthcoming releases section etc.
That way at least it's the peoples choice to take it how they like, where as i agree, if you were to do it in a dictatorial manner that would simply not work.
Hope thats cleared that up! Soz if i miffed ya. ;)

this may get lost in the huge thread but..
..maybe you could assign someone/two people to cities to update listings for that area.
Loads of people are passionate about their local scene and i'm sure would be more than glad to maintain a listing liek this
send me the bio and pic
i'll put the profile up.
technical reasons
The other boards stand on their own, whereas the comments board summarizes content drawn from other non-board sections of the site.
I might move it onto the community page in the next site revision, though.
The label is a separate company
And it's rather important to those of us working on the website that it maintains editorial autonomy from the label.
That said I'm sure it wouldn't be too much work for the label folks to create a profile for you guys.
If you can persuade MySQL or InnoDB
to implement fulltext search for the InnoDB storage engine, then I'll give you a forum search.
How's that for a deal.
Lack of diversity in reporting...
Although I do very much love this site, especially its interactive nature and its impartiality, (in particular your refusal to mix label with website,) I do sometimes despair for the lack of diversity in both your reporting and reviewing.
Earlier on in this discussion ‘Panic’ not only made the point that, upon looking at recent album reviews, he thought that claiming that DIS coverage was “indie-centric,” was unfair, but also that (in regards to Hip-Hop,) “there's really not much around that's exciting.”
It seems to me that this statement is rather flawed. Not only do I seriously disagree with his seemingly ill-advised opinion that there is ‘not much around that’s exciting,’ but more importantly, opinions on Hip-Hop aside, it is pretty clear that DiS’s coverage of Hip-Hop is all but none.
When a major music website fails to report on any of the releases of such ground breaking and important artists as Ghostface Killah, Nas, Mad Lib, MF Doom, Jay Dilla, it can be described as ‘negligent,’ in that area of music. Even if Panic is wrong and Drowned in Sound really is “indie-centric” (maybe even proud to be so,) surely artists as influential and prominent as Ghostface Killah and Nas cannot be ignored entirely?
The same goes for Bashment/Dancehall/Ragga for which there really is no representation, not even a mention of a Sizzla/Buju Banton/Capleton album in sight.
Sorry if this comes across as shitty, it really isn’t meant to be. I do love DiS, and wouldn’t mind that much if you didn’t change it, but it would be great to have a bit more of everything, especially the really important everythings.
Oh and definitely put average user ratings on reviews.
I completely agree
What would help is if you could find people to review this stuff for us. I'm happy to coordinate getting more diverse stuff onto the site, but I don't have a lot of time for it as my focus is more on the technology behind the site. D'you know anyone who'd be up for covering this sort of thing for us?
sort this page out
http://www.drownedinsound.com/listings
the picutre links are all wrong
re: global listings
My only criticism is that the listings aren't quite as thorough for the UK as a whole.
With regards to global listings, it would be very handy/helpful if there were listings for as many major cities as possible as I'll be living abroad next year. I'd gladly do the listings for you for nothing if it means helping DiS
i dunno...
what about being able to post polls?
like this for example:
The Automatic are..
1. the worst band ever, ever, ever...
2. the worst band of the year
3. the worst band that have ever been and ever will be, ever...
####
that would be cool....
