The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Off to The Carling Weekend? Not sure who you really really have to see? Here's our guide to ten of the very best.

Bloc Party
Radio One stage
Saturday Reading (12.50-1.30) / Sunday Leeds (12.45 - 1.15)
They’re so hot right now! We’ve been banging on about them at DiS since last summer (look at us… we’re so hot right now too!). Hipsters are talking about them as the new Franz, the media are still mumbling about them being the new Blur. Whatever. They’re doing the exact same slot Idlewild did in ’98. They rock live. And they’ve just finished their debut album which is due out early next year. Dance.

dEUS
Radio One Stage
Sunday Reading (5.45-6.30) / Friday Leeds (5.20 - 6.05)
Pop-bending at its Flemish finest. If your world hasn’t yet been touched by Tom Barman’s warped words or gigantic fuzzed up melodies, then get yourself along to this. It’s the first time they’ve played the UK in years. Warning: you may see grown men crying.

Devendra Banhart
Carling Stage
Sunday Reading (8.30 - 9.15) / Friday Leeds (8.10 - 8.55)
A singersonger from New York with an occasional warbling falsetto. As seen on Jools Holland. Sound familiar? This one is special. Proper special. Of his ‘Rejoicing In The Hands’ lp out back in May on XL we said “Banhart is a complete antidote to all the consumer focus groups or hit-writers, too scared to tamper with the formula. He has stumbled upon a personal Eureka that says there're no laws governing what can be written about in song except self-imposed ones and he's taken that to his heart, and in Technicolor.”

The Shins
Carling stage
Friday Reading (9.35pm) / Saturday Leeds (9.05pm)
American indie at this year's finest. Heartbreakingly good songs that sound like Paul Simon thrashing at an electric guitar. But a lot less sucky. Our reviewer said of their sophomore album 'Chutes too Narrow': "the album is a glorious, 30-minute mini-pop-epic; a blanket of buried hooks and handclaps, cheap synths, thrift-store strings and stiff-lipped la-de-da's."

Agent Blue
Carling stage
Saturday Reading (1.30pm) / Sunday Leeds (1.30pm)
Rioutous quintet who're setting themselves up to release their debut album. Of their majestic second single, we wrote: "'Sex, Drugs & Rocks Through Your Window' is made by a bunch of teens and sounds like Eddie Cochran on Future Drugs. It chugs, it wails, it gurns and it's utterly irrepressibly brilliant. " Also Londoners can catch them at a post-Reading DiS show next Thursday, September 2nd @ 93feet East.

Fiery Furnaces Radio 1 Stage
Sunday Reading (1.45pm) / Friday Leeds (1.40pm)
Having released their bewitching debut record last year, the Chicago brother and sister waste no time in preparing to release their second effort in a fortnight's time. Seeing them play live last year, DiS uttered the words: "Putting inevitable American Blues-Duo comparisons to one side, The Fiery Furnaces have found a skewed sound they can most definitely call their own. Intense, playful and inventive, this band is simply great."

Goldie Lookin' Chain
Mainstage
Friday Reading (12.00-12.30) / Saturday Leeds (12.00-12.30)
Top 3 single? Chav as you like, mate. The most giggle-a-minute entertaining band we saw at V last weekend. This will be a very special way to start your weekend. You knows it.

Do Me Bad Things
Carling Stage
Friday Reading (1.15 - 1.45) / Saturday Leeds (12.45 - 1.15)
Another band from the Must Destroy stable, which brought us the Darkness and GLC. Of their debut EP DiS said: “The man Tremendous Mike (obe) has once again discovered the band that we all want. There will be no surprise here; this will of course explode. Magazines will have to fit nine bad things on their covers; radio will have to cram nine bad things into their recording booths; TV should be fine - plenty of space. This is special.”

Kaiser Chiefs
Carling Stage
Sunday Reading (2.45 - 3.15) / Friday Leeds (2.30 - 3.00)
Oh shhhhush about nepotism. DiS Recs disrecords.com released their debut single. They’re about to explode with their poppier than pop indie eclecticism.

Riff Random
Carling Stage
Saturday Reading (12.45 -1.15) / Sunday Leeds (12.45 - 1.15)
Noisydelic aussies who’ve just recorded their debut EP with Ben Lurie from Jesus & Mary Chain. One for fans of Sonic Youth, Spiritualized, The Warlocks…

DiScuss: Who d'you wanna see? Who you looking forward to seeing?

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Of course, DiS presumes EVERYONE will be catching Mike Patton and Rahzel. No need to state the obvious methinks.

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Yeah. That was my thought. Was the not too obvious ones. And the blantant reminders of stage times for bands we assume all DiS readers will wanna see but maybe not spend £12, on top of £120, plus the price of getting there and inflation on consumbles, to find out when time they're on.
Logical? Hope so.

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Um...

The Bronx
Mark Lanegan
The Icarus Line
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Coheed and Cambria

are MUST see, and that's just one day! Some of those others... shame on you.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Banhart from New York? Er.....no. Wrong side of the country, Sean.

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

That's what the stuffs on the web i read said, as I wasnt 100% sure. Oh well. Sorry. I better go continue my hunt for wellies now...

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Actually, he is based in New York now.

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

DIZZEE

FUCKING

RASCAL

And to think, there will be people watching Morrissey instead?!?!?!?!!! Madness!!

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Everyone should go and see Mitch Benn, and request the excellent 'I Never Went Through A Smiths Phase'.

Then they should go and see Chas 'n' Dave and request 'Hold On! I'm Comin', for comic effect.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

you should see the lot, or as many as possible regardless.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

>>>BLOC PARTY >>>They’re so hot right now! We’ve >>>been banging on >>>about them at DiS since last >>>summer (look at us… >>>we’re so hot right now too!).

So hot, that when I dared to give them a bad review a couple of months ago, it got censored!

Oh fuck it. I'll probably regret posting this.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

If you gave Bloc Party a bad review you must've been wrong.....Its the LAW.

BP are bound to be the band of the Festival unless McLusky can raise their game to the heights of Oxford earlier this year...

Bloc Party and Riff Random clash - so nobody will be at Riff Random then!

Also if The Futureheads, McLusky, British Sea Power, Golden Virgins, The Bronx, TV on the Radio and The Duke Spirit aren't better than 90% of your list - I'll be amazed.

Looking forward to seeing Agent Blue though I must say - three corking singles.

I'm afraid Goldie Looking are a two minute joke stretched far too thin, people are really going to despise this band in six months time.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

All ten in that list should be dEUS, but a #2 spot will suffice.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/

ONE BAND TO AVOID: TAT, this is my neigbours band and they are the worst.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Oh dear. After the hype, I went to see Do Me Bad Things. As someone who normally likes a bit of glam, and someone who especially likes bands that really wind up uptight people, I thought they would be good. They weren't. They were atrocious. Strip away the five singers and leave them with one and it would have been much easier to see that they were basically pub rock - and below-par pub rock at that. Besides which, two of the singers (the two on the right, if you saw them) were far too busy looking utterly pleased with themselves, and to all intents and purposes they had the appearance of people who had said 'oh, WE'LL be in your band'. I remember people exactly like them from my schooldays. The other lady had a really good voice and her talents are utterly wasted in that band.

Pffff.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Do Me Bad Things sound a bit too much like Skunk Anansie for my liking.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Bloc Party had the biggest audience I have seen in the big tent ever at their time slot - approx ten times more people than Sterolab.

And they were sensational.

TV On The Radio were BLINDING too.
Absolutely magnificent.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

Fiery Furnaces were utter, utter, absolute, complete, total, shite....

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

But their records are magical.

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

censorsed because of the quality of the writing, rather than the reviews angle.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

no. fiery furnaces were probably the best band there.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/

no Fiery Furnaces were pap. not as completely shit as The Others or The Gliteratti who were the shittest bands of the entire weekend...but right up there is crapsville.

agreed that Bloc Party had a huge crowd, so did The Holiday Plan in Concrete Jungle at the same time...then I stared across to the Main Stage (in a "where have all these people come from" moment) and saw that Young Heart Attack had fuck all people at the main stage...so that's where all the crowds came from at 12.45 on Saturday!!! the tents won.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/Leeds

devendra Bernhart...brilliant. Secret machines..also brilliant.had to sit on the floor during both cos the tall people of this world haad to stand at the very front. hehehe.

The others - utter utter shite. worst band ive every seen, whose that lead singer?? Jimmmyy? or johnnyy.. worse than razorshite.

22-20s and dogs die in hot cars + British sea power + Devendra were best acts of my weekend..had to go home a lil early so i missed my faves..like soundtrack of our lives, the kills, von bondies. grrr.

The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/

Where were the recommendations for The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mclusky, British Sea Power, Mitch Benn, Modest Mouse, TV On The Radio, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Bouncing Souls, Amplifier (although in fairness they did clash with BSP) and Mark Lanegan, then, Mr. Adams? For shame...

Devendra Banhart was damn fine (although I knew he was going to be anyway - I adore his twittering insanity), but I avoided everyone else that was recommended.

Re: The 10 Bands You MUST See This Weekend at Reading/

They were all obvious recommendations. It wasn't a definitive list. We could have ended up recommending the whole ruddy thing and leaving ourselves nothing to say in the actual review.
I did re-title this '10 bands you musn't miss' for the printed versions handed out onsite...
