Owiny Sigoma Band at Cafe Oto, London, Mon 06 Jun

Review by Paul Clarke

There’s no doubt that it’s the Kenyans that are the stars of this show, and that they had East London’s natives in the palms of their hands.»

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Fanzine at Birmingham HMV Institute, , Tue 14 Jun

Review by Dom Gourlay

Although perhaps surprising to the band themselves at any rate, that Belong found itself cited as one of 2011's most eagerly anticipated releases is testimony in itself to the unparallelled rise of ** from zineworld's nest kept secret to (pardon the pun) genuine "contenders".»

The Heartbreaks at Spanky Van Dykes, Nottingham, Sat 04 Jun

Review by Dom Gourlay

Hailing from the Lancashire seaside resort of Morecambe, a town usurped in popularity by the neighbouring Southport and Blackpool respectively, The Heartbreaks simplistic musical creations depict a world where the faded glamour of the town they grew up in breeds escapism while kitchen sink dramas rule supreme.»

Wild Beasts, Summer Camp at Y Theatre, Leicester, Leicestershire, Mon 09 May

Review by Dom Gourlay

Today is a big day for Wild Beasts. Third album (and first since being overlooked by the Mercury judges nine months ago) Smother finally landed in record stores this morning, and only four songs into the set, Tom Fleming is already admitting it feels as though a huge weight has been lifted.»

Battles at ICA, London, Wed 20 Apr

Review by Robert Ferguson

Any nerves that may have been present in the group about stepping out from the shadow of Braxton were not evident in their manner. »

trail of dead at electric ballroom

Live Review: ...Trail of Dead @ Electric Ballroom

Review by Milton Savage

Tao of the Dead has been received, almost across the entirety of the critical spectrum, as the Texan band’s finest work since their 2002 major label debut – and on the evidence presented here tonight, where ‘Summer of All Dead Souls’ cracks and sparks with every mercury-bubbling Kelvin felt when they’re ploughing through ‘Relative Ways’, ‘Will You Smile Again?’ and ‘Caterwaul’, it’s hard to argue against the blanket opinion. »

Cloud Control at Bodega Social, Nottingham, Sat 09 Apr

Review by Dom Gourlay

While comparisons with fellow antipodean exports The Temper Trap are inevitable, Cloud Control are part of a new broom sweeping across Australia's occasionally barren music scene alongside kindred spirits Tame Impala and The Jezebels.»

Elbow at The O2 Arena, London, Tue 29 Mar

Review by Kelvin Goodson

To continue to laud a group of seasoned, obviously talented musicians for sticking at it seems tantamount to congratulating Lionel Messi for being short.»

Wu Lyf

Wu Lyf at Bodega Social, Nottingham, Sun 20 Mar

Review by Dom Gourlay

If the impending rise of Brother marked the point where the hype machine jumped the shark in a style more accustomed to the impressive feats of Bob Beamon and Carl Lewis, the anti-hype stance of Manchester's WU LYF seems to have created an air of nonchalance if tonight's poor turnout is anything to go by.»

Make no mistake, this is a band at the height of its musical powers; a band that’s not scared to push beyond comfort zones or boundaries. »
