Memoryhouse at The Deaf Institute, Manchester, Mon 26 Mar

Review by Hayley Avron

Memoryhouse’s songs are necessarily painted in watercolour; softened round the edges, bound and blurred by effect. Without that, they appear untethered and pithy.»

Pop Will Eat Itself at The Rescue Rooms, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Wed 21 Mar

Review by Dom Gourlay

Once upon a time when people actually bought records, any independent artist obtaining a chart position in the Top 40 was seen as something as a moral victory among the alternative underground.»

Spiritualized at The Rescue Rooms, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Fri 16 Mar

Review by Dom Gourlay

One could be forgiven for thinking they'd inadvertently stumbled into an East Midlands Oasis fan convention rather than a Spiritualized concert... »

Killing Joke, The Icarus Line at Corporation, Sheffield, Fri 09 Mar

Review by Dom Gourlay

The Killing Joke machine rolls on, thirty-four years and counting...»

shrag

Shrag, Tunabunny, Horowitz at Chameleon Gallery, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Fri 02 Mar

Review by Dom Gourlay

Brighton collective Shrag might be veterans of the DIY scene, having first emerged almost a decade ago. Nevertheless, their incendiary, occasionally shambolic, but never dull live shows have often thrown up several talking points. Such as why haven't they attained more widespread recognition by now?»

The Twilight Sad, Let’s Wrestle, Childhood at Stealth, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Wed 15 Feb

Review by Dom Gourlay

Say what you will about the occasional inconsistencies of The Twilight Sad's recorded output but live they've always been an entirely different proposition.»

Still Corners, My Sad Captains at Bodega Social, Nottingham, Tue 07 Feb

Review by Dom Gourlay

It's a different, more confident Still Corners standing before us from the band that nervously played a mid-afternoon set to barely a handful of punters at last summer's Latitude...»

DJ Food at Royal Observatory Greenwich, Greenwich, Thu 19 Jan

Review by Paul Clarke

DJ Food might not have made any giant musical leaps on record lately, but live - with a literal rocket up his arse - he can take you into a headspace no-one else has before.»

TDS

The Domino State, Daniel Land & The Modern Painters, SPC ECO at Camden Barfly, Camden Town, Fri 20 Jan

Review by Dom Gourlay

Playing a set mostly comprised of material from their debut, the six-piece exude a confidence and determination usually reserved for bands of a far higher status. »

Teeth Of The Sea at The Lexington, London, UK, Sun 15 Jan

Review by Els

Brutal, savage and a shitload of fun.»

Manic Street Preachers at The O2 Arena, London, Sat 17 Dec

Review by Dom Gourlay

With the promise of all 38 (THIRTY-EIGHT!) singles from their recently released collection receiving an airing this evening over the course of the next three hours, not to mention a couple of surprise guest appearances along the way, tonight's show has all the makings of being a special event. »

Ghostface Killah, DOOM at Roundhouse, London, South East England, Sat 05 Nov

Review by Kyle Ellison

Untapped potential and wonky computer graphics from this heavyweight hip-hop doubleheader.»

Puressence, The Cedars at Bodega Social, Nottingham, Sat 12 Nov

Review by Dom Gourlay

Although largely a cult phenomenon here, Puressence continue to flourish overseas, and while recently released sixth LP Solid State Recital came out virtually unnoticed in the UK, the band's status as one of this country's most proficient exports this past decade remains.»

Arctic Monkeys, The Vaccines at Trent FM Arena, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Fri 28 Oct

Review by Dom Gourlay

By the time a gloriously sedate yet exquisitely delivered '505' bring the encore and proceedings to a close, the Arctic Monkeys status as the undisputed kings of commercially viable alternative rock is well and truly assured. »

The Horrors, Toy at Rock City, Nottingham, Wed 26 Oct

Review by Dom Gourlay

Four years is a long time in music. As far as The Horrors are concerned it could be another lifetime altogether. When the adolescent garage punk of Strange House landed unceremoniously on DiS' doormat back in the spring of 2007, it's probably fair to say no one could have predicted many commentators calling its creators the most progressive, forward-thinking band on UK shores. Indeed, any such suggestion at that time would have resulted in a visit from the men in white coats.»

wu

Wu Lyf at The Rescue Rooms, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Fri 21 Oct

Review by Dom Gourlay

On a day when Manchester's past announced record ticket sales of nearly one quarter of a million in less than an hour, its present was busily laying foundations for the future...»

Mazes, Milk Maid, Eagulls, Weird Menace at Spanky Van Dykes, Nottingham, Sun 09 Oct

Review by Dom Gourlay

While Sunday evenings aren't normally considered to be anything more than prolonged hangover sessions in front of the television set, there are several reasons (well, three to be exact) why Nottingham is literally bursting at the seams this evening...»

Love Inks

Love Inks, Swimming, Yunioshi, Blind Caves at The Rescue Rooms, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Fri 23 Sep

Review by Dom Gourlay

Nottingham really is the place to be at this moment in time. Having waited more than a decade for someone from the local music scene to break through, 2011 has seen London's A&R scouts decamped in the city. »

Electrelane, Francois and the Atlas Mountains at XOYO, London, Tue 16 Aug

Review by Sam Lewis

Electrelane point the way for all British guitar bands – be smart, not dumb. Be honest. Be real.»

Fleet Foxes at Apollo, Manchester, Tue 28 Jun

Review by Gideon Brody

As people pour out into refreshingly cool streets, there's the very real sense that part three of this story can't come soon enough.»
