There’s a knowing glow about Haven tonight. Not just in the way they exchange glances with each other, but in the sense that every one of the new songs from their second LP All For A Reason has a sublime beauty about it. Gary Briggs’ majestic voice needs no introduction, and lacking the pompous theatrics of Matt or the whiney arrogance of Walsh, his retrained presence is refreshing. It’s fair to say that their style hasn’t undergone any major facelifts, but tracks like ‘Change Direction’ and the awesome ‘Have No Fear’ have such splintering melodies that this is never really a problem.

Whatever grudges one may have against Haven’s incestuous Smiths relationship (Johnny Marr produces again and co-writes a track on their record), breakthrough singles like ‘Let It Live’ are the kind of tear-induced pop epics that Keane aspire to. Fact. It’s great music.

If Haven fall down, it’s in the lack of any pace changes in their set. There’s no quiet/loud – just consistency and for some this is boring. Anyone with some mid-nineties candles still alight however, will find their under-hyped emotion to be as life-affirming as anything. Anyone listening with truthful ears will tell you that, as songs, many of Haven’s new tracks piss all over anything on the forthcoming Franz Ferdinand LP.

None of this is about competition though because, if we are to believe correctly, 2004 is the year that proper songwriters take back the charts and ‘indie’ breathes again. Lighters in the air then.

Haven

It'll have to be a hell of a lot better than Between the Senses to come close to being...well, half-decent.

What is it with proper songwriters this year? Most of the indie Toronto mags are buzzing with uproarings about singer-songwriters not being taken seriously or getting enough coverage. One of them even made illusions ot one songwriter being as good as early Elton John... wooo, just the sort of talent we need to encourage, people who end up donating sucky songs to dead royalty. Haven have got a first album to overcome because that first album was lumpen and turgid. It'll be interesting to see how album Numero Dos goes.

Haven

Just wondering, like, erm, in what way Haven's relationship with Johnny Marr is incestuous?

Re: Haven

Many of us love The Smiths, but few would write a song or make a record with our heroes because, well, y'know, it just ain't right. Sometimes.

Like when The Smiths drummer went to try out with Suede...

But Johnny's done a great job producing the record as he's clearly realised the awful Healers were going nowhere.

Haven

HAHAHA. what a laugable review.

Haven are TERRIBLE.

Haven

"Lighters in the air then." - Did you mean to end on such a homosexual note?

Haven

thing is about haven is..err.nothing..goes in one ear and out the next..nothing to make you feel great to be alive nothing to the frighten the kids..no edge...yet there are bands(i in manchester ) that do exactly as it says on the tin

Haven

Hmmm a change of name wouldn't go amiss either.

Why do some pricks bother sharing their small minded opinions? The comments from peanuts like "jj" ,or is that "gay-gay", are so unneccesary so unless you got anything legit to say keep it to yourselves.
Havens talent goes far beyond any of the positive recognition they already receive. These guys are making proper music with more passion and empathy for what they do than most acts who sit in the charts and clog up the industry.
Most of their songs are indeed catchy, powerful, melodic and evocative. Sounds like they are doing everything right to me.
