Some bands need a focal point. In Amelia Pruen, London’s Go Go Pimps have just that. Sexy, sassy and writhing, she delivers her vocals with a breathless paucity – the perfect antidote to the grumbling guitar and bass lines that colour The ‘Pimps set. The majority of the songs have the requisite trashy edge and tight changes, that prevent their tunes from falling into the ‘lost and found’ bucket of Stooges make-overs, and the rest of the band are competent and solid in their role as Pruen’s backup.
Yet herein lies the problem – this band does not look like a band. Much more a bunch of session musicians happily going through the motions for the singer. They all play very well, but tonight there is a sense of simply too much space – no glue, no pulse. Unfortunately therefore, the songs – some of which are very, very catchy and dynamic – just fail to breach that vital raw threshold - a transition so essential when playing punk tunes that must compete with so many others. However, there is no doubting that in former opera singer Pruen, Go Go Pimps have someone who can take them very far indeed.
